Um johnson did more than just put in a few trick plays with the pistol set. We had several formations out of the pistol that year. We went from option routes to normal route trees for lee becaus ehe couldn't read them. We ran more read option off zone blocking that year. We had a more traditional I form running attack out of the flex with god high using sweeps, tosses, and isos from the A-back position. Our QB run game was pretty much all draws or read option out of the pistol. He put in the diamond formation to get an outside run game. We had more in but Vad couldn't run the option stuff from undercenter or in the pistol so not much we could do there. His inability to grasp the option game really limited what we could do. Johnson did evolve the offense for vad lee. it didn't work. He then changed the offense for JT as well. JT wouldn't benefit from being in teh pistol his stature benefits from more run and shoot passing and undercenter running get him down hill quicker. JT's ability to read the option game lead to a lot more of that being called. JT was also really good at the back shoulder through and the comeback, we ran pass concepts that took advantage of that.
Marshall's inability to read the option has lead to a different playbook as well to take advantage of his natural running talent. Unfortunately he can't seem to read option routes nor make called throws either so johnsons going to have to do something there. Oliver doesn't know the offense well enough to check at the line but Marshall seems to check into the wrong things so im not sure how much worse we have it there.
As for vad lee's year. In games we tried to get the option going lee would have 20 plus carries with no real yardage. other than that usually the workload was split between the b-backs and godhigh. Lee also averaged 15 attempts a game in a win and 20 plus attempts in a loss. The win number is dragged down by the 2 fcs teams we played that year where we didn't have to do much more than hand it to the b-back and uva where we didn't do much more than hand it to the b-back with both b-backs scoring 2 tds and over 100 yards in that game each. We were a power run play action team that year.
