Um johnson did more than just put in a few trick plays with the pistol set. We had several formations out of the pistol that year. We went from option routes to normal route trees for lee becaus ehe couldn't read them. We ran more read option off zone blocking that year. We had a more traditional I form running attack out of the flex with god high using sweeps, tosses, and isos from the A-back position. Our QB run game was pretty much all draws or read option out of the pistol. He put in the diamond formation to get an outside run game. We had more in but Vad couldn't run the option stuff from undercenter or in the pistol so not much we could do there. His inability to grasp the option game really limited what we could do. Johnson did evolve the offense for vad lee. it didn't work. He then changed the offense for JT as well. JT wouldn't benefit from being in teh pistol his stature benefits from more run and shoot passing and undercenter running get him down hill quicker. JT's ability to read the option game lead to a lot more of that being called. JT was also really good at the back shoulder through and the comeback, we ran pass concepts that took advantage of that.

Marshall's inability to read the option has lead to a different playbook as well to take advantage of his natural running talent. Unfortunately he can't seem to read option routes nor make called throws either so johnsons going to have to do something there. Oliver doesn't know the offense well enough to check at the line but Marshall seems to check into the wrong things so im not sure how much worse we have it there.

As for vad lee's year. In games we tried to get the option going lee would have 20 plus carries with no real yardage. other than that usually the workload was split between the b-backs and godhigh. Lee also averaged 15 attempts a game in a win and 20 plus attempts in a loss. The win number is dragged down by the 2 fcs teams we played that year where we didn't have to do much more than hand it to the b-back and uva where we didn't do much more than hand it to the b-back with both b-backs scoring 2 tds and over 100 yards in that game each. We were a power run play action team that year.

Nice post. What are the problems in the last 2 years. We get plenty of yardage in an open field , but get to the 30 yard line and practically all 11 defenders sell out to stop the run. ( Slight exaggeration ) Then we can't kick a 40 yard FG.

We will see. For those of you that think JG , or LJ or TO is going to be "the guy', I sincerely hope you are right. IF our OL holds together , and IF we have someone who can catch the ball , and kick a FG , and stop a kick off return then maybe we can get back to 7-5 and go to a middling bowl game. YAY !!

It's actually exactly that, we are a space running team this year and last year. Benson was looking like a good interior runner then he got injured. I'd say our problem is really between the 30 and the 10, i can't recall a time this year we haven't scored from within the 10. TQs inability to throw is what is hurting us in that 30 to go situation. What JT gave us was the threat of the TD pass from that range. Marshall doesn't have that. Think back to the JT years, how many of his TD passes were from that range on the hitch and go or a-back seam.

No kidding...yearning for the days of Vad Lee, you know the guy that announced he was transferring about 10 minutes after his last game.
With respect, you (and I) don't know what was happening behind the scenes with Vad. It could well be that CPJ encouraged him to transfer.

I for one do believe that our offense is far too one dimensional without any passing attack. Far too often in the last year and a half we have been stopped pretty easily in the 4th quarter when we should have been controlling the game.

I was at the Duke game in 2013, second game of the year, where Vad lit it up and threw for 4 TDs from the pistol and diamond formation. That was one of the best offensive performances I've seen from CPJ's teams. Those 'wrinkles' worked. Wish CPJ hadn't totally thrown the baby out with the bathwater on that.

But JT5 was better and the job was his to win in 2014 regardless.

I like the guy.

I just don't like what I see on the field the last year plus.....

That's more than fair. We literally look like an uncoached team at times which is inexcusable.

This is the first year I've even started to ask if CPJ still 'wants it'. The on-field product begs that question. We're not as untalented as we appear at times.

The only folks I'll rail against are the contingent who've clearly been rooting for us (i.e. him) to fail so they can step in with their "I told you so's"

According to my PSU friend , Paterno finally hired some more modern offensive staff , including the OC , to update the playing calling. Recruiting improved and Joe Pa finished his career pretty well, except for the scandal. Thinking CPJ could do likewise. CPJ kind of reminds me of Paterno in some ways.
