Fascism /ˈfæʃɪzəm/ is a form of radical authoritariannationalism,[1][2] characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and control of industry and commerce,[3] that came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe.

Much more like Soviet communism than capitalism when you look at actual definitions.

We increasingly do not live in a market economy. How many cable providers do you have? What kind of medical access do you have?

How many people do you know who want anyone who offends them silenced?

It's viewed as more than disrespectful. It's viewed as blasphemous. Look at the level of devotion/invective involved.

Anecdotally, I had a fellow at a bar counter just yesterday opine that these protestors should just be mass incarcerated. That's not a minority viewpoint in the post-Baptist Appalachian region. I have family members who would probably agree with that fellow.

Also the small government folks sure do sign a different tune when it's the military-industrial complex with revolving door lobbyist access, cable communications monopolies with revolving door FCC access (state control?), etc.

Incarcerated? Hahahahahahaha! In all the thousands of comments on message boards and social media, I've never read that once. You either hang out in weird places or are just intentionally exaggerating.

If any group worships the "state" in this country it's leftist liberals with a strong socialist bent.

@Wrecking Ball The silencing you refer to is the suppression of speech rampant in Berkeley no?

Do you really think someone who links David French as an authority is a "leftist liberal?"

I identify as a Burkean conservative, but I identify the right wing in this country as fascist. All that is conservative is right wing, but not all that is right wing is conservative.

And for the record I'm against silencing the silencing of speech at Berkeley too. The worst part was actually years ago when Condi Rice got snubbed.

I didn't ask you to identify your political philosophies. I asked if the silencing you referred to is the leftist anarchist silencing so rampant in Berkeley.

No, the populist masses very much believe this stuff. Have you talked to an honest-to-God Trump supporter?

There's political correctness and silencing on both sides of the aisle. As French points out in the article I linked.

What exactly is a Trump supporter? Is it someone that agrees with his stated goals of curbing illegal immigration, repealing and replacing Obamacare, simplifying the tax code and reducing taxes to the middle class?

Or is it someone that simply likes him personally and approves of his character in general?

The latter. And people who want all of the policy goals that you stated, but for reasons grounded in the lesser aspects of human nature.

I don't personally know any of the former. I'm not one myself, didn't vote for him in the primary, and it pained me to have to choose between Trump and Hillary.

You will have to expand upon your thoughts regarding "reasons grounded in the lesser aspects of human nature" in order for me to have any idea what you are referring to.

Donald Trump is a populist charlatan who ran on essentially the same platform as George Wallace – the politics of rage and the illusion of the loss of American greatness – and these people voted for him because they liked him. He has change the direction of so-called conservatism and people have marched in step to that without even batting an eyelash. He's an imperial narcissist and is in no way an error an heir to any tradition of conservativism in American history with the possible exception of Jacksonian populism.

So now that we've gotten that out of the way, that completely invalidates your previous assertions. Oh well.

I guess what has me up in a frenzy about this is that I discovered that a large number of people vote on the basis of identity. And for a lot of people on the right, the basis of that identity is, in my believe, rooted in white tribalism.

I didn't vote for Trump, but I don't blame people for whoever they voted for this year in particular, because you can't just look at either of the candidates in the vacuum. Each on their own was equally the worst single candidate we've had as long as I can possibly remember. Hillary would've been impeached within six months, and Trump is well on his way. So I don't think it's totally fair to say just because someone voted for a particular candidate that they are completely in love with them and worship the ground they walk on. I know many people that voted for him, and every one of them did so based on the positions and in spite of his behavior and not because of it.

The polling data shows that is what is actually taking place. Then again, does the polling data even mean anything anymore?

I'll say that the local tea party in my town is in love with the man. They are totally and completely fascist in every sense of the word.

So at least my little corner of the world the polls are spot on.

It's a time-honored American tradition to make political speech like that when you want change. It doesn't mean someone hates the nation, it means they are making a point.

Part of my patriotism is that I'm proud to be in a country where you can dislike the country. That will likely change in my lifetime as the right wing has begun a marked and concerning shift towards fascism.

Odd. In my lifetime, I have observed quite the opposite. It does make me wonder how old you are. J F Kennedy would be drummed out of today's Democratic Party for his pro-business stand on taxes. Lyndon Johnson was a war hawk. The country as a whole has so clearly and obviously shifted to the left on so many social issues that in the 60's were unthinkable....gay marriage being the most obvious...that I am left aghast when people like you make this sweeping generalizations. Then to top it all off, you decide to start calling "the right wing" fascists. (Is that me?).

One of us is going over the top. Or should I simply start calling every liberal a commie or a fascist themselves, since huge numbers support government programs in medicine, housing, education, etc etc etc

There you go again trying to be ugly and calling folks names. What exactly do you mean by "fascist"? Your one off story of a guy saying protesters should be incarcerated? The vast majority of TEA party principles I am aware of are the opposite of fascism!
