Alvarado’s Determination

Alvarado hustles his *** off, plays good D, and handles the ball pretty good. He’s not a prolific scorer but he can get his share. What he really needs is a couple of shooters he can distribute the ball to. Or a shooter and legit big man inside. He had one of his poorer performances today but bad games happen. JA is one of our bright spots.
Lol please tell me how Banks isn’t a legit big... I know this won’t be taken with open arms but Jose has no court vision and it’s hurting us.

I like Banks as a player, he has a pretty solid offensive game. His defense is VERY inconsistent. He makes some nice plays, but every single time he let the guy drive right past him down the baseline. That may not be on him, since there should've been some help defense, but still. Claxton kinda outplayed him yesterday.

I really like the kid & do so more after that tweet. He had an off game, he owned it. He just couldn’t get it going. It wasn’t all on him, but he realizes he’s the leader of the team. Sad isn’t it that a Soph is the leader of the team, but that’s where we’re at.

I’m more convinced now that Alvarado is a winner. Kid’s don’t assess themselves like that unless they’ve got real leadership skill. He’s going to do some amazing things here if we can just give him a couple extra pieces to work with & the others develop into what we hope they can be.
I'm convinced he's a winner but unfortunately I don't have any faith Pastner will surround him with a team and game plan that will show him to win in college

I like Banks as a player also. He is a good rim protector, as evidenced by his 2.4 blocks per game (top 30 nationally), and I think he is a good on ball defender when he doesn't get pulled too far from the basket. He has nice offensive game when he commits to it, and he passes well in traffic (but sometimes over passes leading to turnovers).

He has weaknesses though. He sometimes seems to get lost on defense and let guys either get by him or get behind him for easy baskets. I get nervous anytime he dribbles the ball, because he is not a good ball handler. And, to me, his biggest weakness is for some reason he seems to have trouble holding on to the ball. He loses the ball in traffic several times per game.

Because he is not absolutely dominant, I don't think he should be playing 35-40 minutes per game. I think AD should be getting about 10 minutes per game in for Banks. AD developed some really nice post moves as the season went on last year and is also a shot blocker. I am not sure if he has regressed or what?

This young man deserves our support. Period.
Jose still contributes even in the bad shooting games. We need to change gritty to gritsy to make him more southern.AS our floor general its time for him to start watching Devoe and give him a kick in the rump each time he passes up an up an openlook three.Devoe finally did do some decent drives in this one. The shot selection will return if someone helps to take some of the scoring load.

He may not be Jason Kidd, but how can you say he is hurting us? He is the cog that makes this machine go. Without Jose, this team would struggle to score 30 points per game. When he sits, the team usually struggles to do anything. I do wish he could get others more involved and up his assists per game, but the dude is trying to (has to) do it all. He is practically our second leading rebounder for goodness sake.

I've been saying all season we need a much more selfish Devoe. Just let it fly, man. I'm tired of seeing him swing the ball to a worse shooter for a worse shot (sic).

He doesn't seem to believe in himself just yet. Hopefully Jose can help reassure him. We need him especially since it seems the TN transfer isn't quite helping us as much as hoped.

Banks has potential but he plays too soft in the paint imo. Doesn’t use very good footwork for positioning and just isn’t as physical as he could be in the paint and on the blocks. Just my 2 cents.

In playing time Banks is still pretty young, given that he mostly rode the pines the last 2 years at UT. So, I have hopes that he will improve greatly as time goes on.

Hey, kg01, I was also hoping Phillips would show up more this year than he has. Not sure why.
(For some reason, I thought you wrote "Alvarado" instead of "Devoe". Jose has no problem keeping the ball for a shot.)
Anyway, from inside the arc, so far Devoe isn't one of our better shooters. Like you'd expect, Banks and Moore are up there (layups?), but Haywood, Phillips, and Alvarado are usually better in close.

From 3 point territory, Devoe is in the top 5, but he's still only 28%. Haywood and Alston are your guys. (I don't have historical bits broken out, but Alston was good at the start of the season, and I don't think he's been as good lately, but that's my memory--no numbers there). To me, this says we should have screen-and-shoot plays for Alston or Haywood to help boost our 3pt%. I read this as saying we have two outside shooters--Alston and (kinda) Haywood.

For grins, I picked Marquette randomly (I wanted a team that should go to the NCAA, but not a top 10 team). Sorted by 3pt%, they have four guys that can shoot.

Effort should not be guestioned. Devoe, Moore and others give all they have. It may not meet your requirements and goals, but effort is there. CJP system it’s not effort no play. That’s why you don’t see some on the floor. Sometimes you can try too hard trying to to prove the naysayers wrong and that puts added pressure on the individual. Let the season play out before we question heart and desire

I agree. I think Pastner does a good job of getting his guys to play hard. But again it doesn’t matter how hard you play if you can’t draw up the Xs and Os

We use the same X’s and O’s that some top 25 teams do. The layout and movement is the same, but the passes and shots aren’t as accurate.

CJP offense is very dependent on outside shooters, but yet he can’t seem to recruit any. Hell the mid majors do a much better job recruiting shooters then we do. It baffles me that we can’t seem to identify any during the recruiting process.

Slugboy, nice stats. Thanks for posting.

The 3 pt stats indicate that we only have one good 3 pt shooter (Alston), but he is getting limited attempts, so who knows if he is really a 50% 3 pt shooter (probably not). If he is, then I say he should be taking 6-8 3's per game, and we should be running some better offense to get him open looks.

The 3 pt and 2 pt stats tell me that Haywood is too one dimensional, relying too much on his supposed 3 pt shooting prowess, and if you watch him in the games (a lot of standing in one spot on the 3 pt line), you are left with this impression also. He is actually our best 2 pt % shooter by the numbers, and yet he is 8th on the team in 2 pt attempts. I think he needs to be encouraged to be more involved in looking for scoring opportunities other than just 3 pt shots.

It's obvious that we are not a good 3 pt shooting team, and the 4 out perimeter game looking to shoot 20 plus 3's per game is not going to be a recipe for success. The coaches seem to have dialed this strategy back a little with the emergence of Banks in the low post, but we need to see more activity to get the guards either more 2 pt scoring opportunities or absolutely wide open 3's.

You think Price and Salley were under-the-radar steals? You could not be more wrong. Price underdeveloped? His father was a HS coach and Billy Tubbs wanted Price so badly he would have crawled over broken glass to have him. The only reason we got him is because Tubbs pissed his father off. Do some homework before you post this nonsense.
Price was a steal from Oklahoma’s backyard, not under the radar. Sally, however, was most definitely a project.

And I’ve seen several Crimins teams **** the bed early in the season even though ranked and then turn it around as the season wore on. JP needs to get his redshirts set up and in order, and double down on his recruiting. I think we’ll see another year possibly two before we get to where we want to be, but we’ll also see improvement as this year and next progresses.
