It's a thing that Geoff Collins has had for years, which he picked up (I believe) from the Alabama defensive staff.

Alabama has used the phrase for their 3rd down defense for a long time (here's a link from last year, for example: https://247sports.com/college/alaba...on-Tide-in-win-over-Arkansas-State-121654823/)

Florida used it the entire time Collins was there as well: https://www.alligator.org/sports/fo...cle_9baaef1e-709a-11e5-9bf5-57baea170fb5.html

Collins then took it with him to Temple: https://247sports.com/college/templ...needs-help-in-battle-with-leukemia-121458231/

It's now spread across the entire SEC at this time, as far as I can tell ... Auburn players were using the phrase earlier this year: https://auburntigers.com/news/2019/...nt-auburn-defense-rises-up-on-third-down.aspx

So yeah, it's not a unique to GT thing and it seems that's it probably going to be widely adopted across the entire south in terms of a football term.

Fine if the team calls it money down; just dont blast it through the PA and Jumbotron every single third down for the entire season. Would be like blasting all the way turnt up against gardner webb for a noon kick in september.

It's stupid. We ain't Miami that gets off on cheap thrills. At least I hope not. Can we please just call it for what it is? Third down. Simple.

I’m as a much of a “get off my lawn” type as many GT fans appear to be, but after seeing our defense for 2 games I don’t care of they yell “money down” while wearing purple jerseys on every play. Just keep playing like that and I’ll be happy. After watching our recent defenses and the “10 yard cushion” I’ll gladly take a side of goofiness with my juice.

After 2 games of watching our new defense, as I watched the Texas DB’s play the cushion defense late in that game giving up first down after first down while being down I was yelling to get up on them. Just that quickly I realized GT is now a defensive team after a decade of the offense being the focal point.

Drop it, it's annoying, particularly when we were lit up on a number plays that make us look foolish...

After years of hovering around 50% on 3rd down, why don’t the players need it?

If they need “money down” to understand the importance of 3rd down we are in a heap of trouble. But they don’t. Success on 3rd has nothing to do with that silly crap.

If it did....I guess all we needed under Roof was some silly “money down” nonsense.

And you know this how???

Roof absolutely should’ve incorporated it. Go look at Tenuta 3rd down defense when he incorporated

Thinking more about it, I don’t even mind the concept of Money Down that much...if CGC has the team bought into it, and they like it...fine. Even show the Money Down graphics on the screens in the stadium. But my biggest issue was the saying it over the PA system every down, and even the way it was said... something about that guy’s voice over and over just made it...not my favorite thing. As I said before, it just felt forced.

Tenuta didn't need it because Tenuta knew how to build a defense. Roof needed more than a silly cheer over the PA system.

He thought he needed or he wouldn’t have put it is defensive philosophy.

The “Money down” heightens your focus and as JT said reforces “the menu” knowing your assignment, opponent formation and alignment, & down and distance

It's not the "philosophy" that is the problem. The problem is our AWFUL PA announcer screaming it on EVERY 3rd down situation, just like until this year he screamed, "It's thirrrrrrrrdddd down." That's what gets old fast and doesn't excite anybody.
