The only thing Philo lacks is game reps which he got a lot last night. Kid is a baller and with game time he’ll turn into a lethal D1 QB. I believe that is what hindered Pyron. In no sport can a player not play for 3-4 years and not have a significant deterioration of skills. Practice isn’t a game.

Philo has “it” for the D1 level. Now, it‘s about playing time to see how much he advances year to year. I really want him to redshirt but I know everyone will disagree especially with who our next opponent is. But the idea of a 23 year old 3rd year starter makes me smile. Just wish we didn’t burn it.

He will probably redshirt next year.

Yep....I love the guy...my only quibble is that I wish fewer bombs were being underthrown. That 1st one last night to Singleton would have been an easy TD if thrown 10 or 15 feet further. Singleton had to slow and wait for it...allowing the DB to catch up and break up the catch. Easy for me to say, right? He is probably saying the same thing to himself!
I thought that during the game, but after reflection I think something different. The pass to Boyd in the end zone was about half a second too late. Maybe the pass to Singleton wasn't "underthrown", but was half a second late. Philo is playing really well. What I say next isn't a detraction on that statement. He is taking too long to make decisions. Late on passes, too much zip on short passes, and waiting too long to run in a wide open field on 3rd and 7. Those are all pretty common for true freshman QBs. As he gets more experience, the game will slow down and he will improve on those things. The receivers should have caught several passes that the did not. However, in a year or two Philo will make the throws sooner, and speed/distance appropriate so that those passes are easier to catch.

Don't forget he was throwing into a very strong wind in the fourth quarter. The 3rd down pass with about 4 minutes left was under thrown into the teeth of that wind. That same wind almost cost us a win with helping a 58 yard FG.

Philo looked awesome for sure but I think you guys have short memory. He’s played 1 meaningful game so far.

- we felt the same about Jeff Simms after his first game winning at FSU

- we felt the same after that epic opener against Tennessee with Taquon Marshall in 2017

Hold on the brakes boys and let Key manage the situation….

I would like to chime in on Philo's throws as well. On his only pick in the north ez, he did have some zip on the ball, but if he had floated it, well, it may have been picked too, but probably by a different guy. It was a pretty tight window closing fast. Having watched it about 6 times on replay, IMHO the biggest reason for the drop was Singleton had his eyes on the defenders trying to adjust where he was going to squat for the throw. He just got them around a hair too late to pick up the ball in time. Had he put his eyes in the right place he probably snatches the ball out of the air no problem. It was second and 7 from the +9. Perhaps the biggest lesson is really about decision making and not so much about the amount of zip. An early throw to the flat to Stockton was a very safe option (and as high a chance of completion as you can get) which probably would have gotten us to the yard to gain and a fresh set of downs from the 2. I doubt it would have scored, but who knows? It also could have ended up 3rd and 1. Often, young talented QBs think they can can make every play. He nearly made this one. The cost of not making it was catastrophic. The entire outcome of the game was strongly influenced by that single decision. He will learn and grow.

Were the deep balls under-thrown? Yes, but not grossly so. I will reserve judgement about those throws given the conditions he was playing in. Deep shots with air under them in swirling gusty wind conditions are about as unpredictable as they can get. Don't read too much into it. It's tough on receivers too, trying to make adjustments on a ball whose trajectory isn't steady. With that said, there were nearly a handful of contested deep shots where our guys had the clear advantage on the defender. We need to come down with a higher percentage of those. We need to high point the football and use our hands and bodies better than we are. In the end though, it's better to give receivers a chance, than have have the ball landing on turf 3 yards ahead of the target.

The outcome of this game could have been much more to our satisfaction had these plays been made.

Philo has played in the Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Miami and NCSt games. Which one was the meaningful one?

Not a comment to this post specifically but more in general: I roll my eyes at fans who have to pick a QB as their guy and then act like support or enthusiasm for another player is some kind of disloyalty. Feeling the need to defend Haynes King is just so misplaced. To knock Philo and to knock fans for being excited about Philo because they think it is a knock against Haynes King is equally whacked.

Philo's play is worthy of enthusiasm. It has nothing to do with Haynes King.

Also, there is a perplexing degree of obtuseness among fans regarding Haynes King's health. His shoulder has not been right the entire year and has only deteriorated as the season has progressed. There was not a single injury here but a chronic condition that has worsened.

Haynes King has not thrown the ball the same as last season from the FSU game on. Even at FSU his arm strength was noticeably down and his accuracy on his long throws was poor and nothing like last season. The "vanilla" game planning by the staff is not a reflection on our OC but a direct reflection of the limitations on Haynes King's ability to throw the ball effectively.

A credit to the staff for keeping the condition under wraps for as long as they did. A credit to Haynes King for being one tough SOB and a great leader.

But, knock 'em dead Philo!

There is indeed a chance that King’s shoulder injury has resulted in a permanent impairment. While this has nothing to do with the leg fracture he suffered while at Texas A&M, if his shoulder does indeed require surgery, clinical results indicate that on average people lose shoulder strength (like about 15-20% of their previous shoulder strength). Delaying said surgery to the off-season clearly would mean his arm strength was weakened through the season (depending on when the should injury actually occurred). This could explain what we have seen with King (and might help us understand what Pyron has had to go through as well, with his broken collarbone).

Its the binary thinking syndrome. So many people are not capable of liking or agreeing with more than one similar position.

I am so happy we have such a strong QB room!

I agree overall. However, do you have a specific source of information that King’s issue has been a season long issue?

His throwing motion seemed fine early in the season. He made several deep throws, but focused mainly on short/medium throws. I think to avoid the INT bug that was his only concerning metric from 2023.

I do, however, share your apparent concern about his arm strength in general, likely from his prior injury at A&M. This may have played into his INTs as well.

Unsurprisingly, I have heard nothing definitive about this. I don’t expect we will.

I don’t see anything about him having an arm injury at Texas A&M. He suffered a broken leg there….
