Faceguarding is not a penalty in the NCAA rulebook.
Is this the origin of the “it’s always PI if the DB doesn’t look back at the ball” mantra? That's exactly what I said above. My issue is that NCAA refs still call PI on plays where faceguarding is the only "infraction."
My HS school coach was very old school. And we ran out of the shotgun some before it was cool. So, coaches should simply ignore all the data they have about their strengths and the opponents weaknesses, plus the situation data they have for both teams. If they had your contact info they wouldn't need all that research. Simply call @UgaBlows for the play call. Of course, you need to make sure you are watching the game live and not on some silly delay (like YT TV or Spectrum).

I have seen it called when the defender simply obstructs the ball, but never turns around to 'play the ball' and announcers seem to always say (if the defender doesn't turn back to try to make a play on the ball, it's always PI".It’s a PI if the DB doesn’t play the ball and bumps/grabs/pushes the receiver.
There has to be some contact. In that case, an official is much more likely to throw a flag if the defender doesn't turn around. It's the difference between playing the ball with incidental contact and obstructing the receiver.I have seen it called when the defender simply obstructs the ball, but never turns around to 'play the ball' and announcers seem to always say (if the defender doesn't turn back to try to make a play on the ball, it's always PI".
Is it just one ot hose things officials get stuck on?
Apparently that contact can be real OR imagined....as I have seen plenty of cases where it was truly incidental at most. There has to be some contact.
i still have nightmares when Bill Curry called 4 QB sneaks from the 1 or 2 and didn't get in. It may not have happened exactly like that, but that's how i remember it 40 years later. I don't even remember the team. With the legalization of helping the runner now, it boggles my mind why anyone would do anything other than just hammer the ball into the end zone with a first down on the one yard line. Just hike it and cram the ball over the goal line with a full house backfield pushing from behind. Might take two or three attempts.
A big difference between then and now is that helping the runner was against the rules at that time.i still have nightmares when Bill Curry called 4 QB sneaks from the 1 or 2 and didn't get in. totally agree.A big difference between then and now is that helping the runner was against the rules at that time.
Incidental contact would be viewed in most cases as pass interference if the defender has his back to the ball. There's no doubt officials miss calls from time to time.Apparently that contact can be real OR imagined....as I have seen plenty of cases where it was truly incidental at most.
Face guarding used to be a penalty. I haven’t seen it called in years, so it must have been changed at some point.I have seen it called when the defender simply obstructs the ball, but never turns around to 'play the ball' and announcers seem to always say (if the defender doesn't turn back to try to make a play on the ball, it's always PI".

Different topic. I've watched a good bit of ND and OSU, and they seem evenly matched to me. I was astounded to see Ohio State is favored by 9.5 points! Does that surprise anyone else?
It’s all to force money to one side or another. OSU is B1G and enjoys a much more positive narrative than ND.Different topic. I've watched a good bit of ND and OSU, and they seem evenly matched to me. I was astounded to see Ohio State is favored by 9.5 points! Does that surprise anyone else?
Vegas oddsmakers believe it will take 9.5 points to get ND bettors at the same level as tOSU bettors. I think that is what you are saying, so we're not disagreeing. Just another way of saying it.It’s all to force money to one side or another. OSU is B1G and enjoys a much more positive narrative than ND.
Not really. Ohio St was a 7 point favorite against Tenn and crushed that. They were a 2.5 point favorite over Oregon and crushed that. They started as a 4.5 point favorite over Texas and it quickly moved to 6.5 and then settled at 6. They covered that easily. There will be plenty of action on Ohio St with a 9.5 point spread. I wouldnt be surprised if it moves to double digits.Different topic. I've watched a good bit of ND and OSU, and they seem evenly matched to me. Defenses are pretty equal but ND’s offense is not up to par with OSU’sDifferent topic. I've watched a good bit of ND and OSU, and they seem evenly matched to me. I was astounded to see Ohio State is favored by 9.5 points! Does that surprise anyone else?
