Well, if that was not targeting, then there is no such thing as targeting.
My point earlier was no one knows what targeting is, it’s called highly inconsistently so it might as well be dumped. As the player is ejected sets the penalty bar too high so reviews seem reluctant to call targeting. Just make it a 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty. It would get called a lot more that way.

Or better yet, just say “We don’t know what targeting is, so it will not be called. Just damn go for it, anything goes.”

Honestly, the way they’ve been calling it this year (not calling it) seems like an over correction. They may need to look at changing the penalty. I’m sure officials don’t want to make a kid sit out of a playoff game.
Maybe ejection only takes place if a second targeting is called.

Targeting is a mess. As I watched that play live (with replay)... all I could think was it looks like targeting based on my understanding of the rule. It also looked like a textbook tackle by the defender (head up... driving through receiver... wrapping up). Heads did collide.

So... should have been "called" targeting AND the targeting rule(s) MUST BE addressed & changed.

My sense too. Seems the trend is to avoid calling targeting. ...in the Ga Tech v Miami game... it took 3 targeting reviews before Miami finally got called for it.

Along with my Texas vs uga post
I'm going to laugh if after doing this fancy new bracket , that we end up with the same top two teams we've seen the last couple of years , under the old system

Did you think the new system was designed to produce different results? It wasn't. It may have... and maybe still will. Besides the obvious of creating a playoff for TV & money for everyone... the new system gives more teams a chance... including the top 2.

That was targeting, but somewhere during the season they stopped calling targeting. I didn't like the no call, but having your address & wife/kids pictures plastered all over the internet was certainly motivation not to make the call. Those Tex fans and sec at all cost fanatics would have gone nuts.

Well Oregon sucks. Ohio State who was 4th in the Big Ten regular season looks like the best team in the CFP up to this point
Bias is bias, intentional or not, which is why rules have to as clearly defined as possible and adhered to regardless of any political outcome.
so was the Texas play targeting based on all the games that have been shown the past 6 weeks? No way to know. One game it is the next it isn’t. Ditch targeting. Personal foul, unnecessary roughness, 15 yards. Take all the helmet crap out.

In September I would have said absolutely Targeting. Now I don’t know, flip a coin. That is a really bad way for college football to be.

Targeting rules have changed. Here's why I think they did not call it targeting. There was no contact with the crown of the helmet (an automatic targeting call, regardless of where on the body the helmet contacts) AND they decided there was no forcible contact with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow, or shoulder, i.e., the tackler didn't launch or lower his head. I'm not saying whether this is targeting or not, but that's my take on why they didn't call it.

That is as good a take as any which is the core problem. There is little consistency in Targeting calls but there seem to be fewer than earlier this season and last season.
