After the combine, where do people think Smelter and Waller will get drafted?

Both were good WRs for us, Smelter was better IMHO. But who knows what the ceilings are for both. Hope we get to see them for a long time the the GT NFL WR corps.

I would think Smelter is likely to be an undrafted free agent purely because of his injury. I don't know about Waller but I think somewhere in the 5th or 6th round is likely.

Probably right, but I wonder if somebody -- NE is good at this, and maybe anybody that has traded for a couple of draft choices -- will try to steal him in the middle rounds. Just from eyeballing him on TV, twice at games, and remembering he was also a top flight baseball pitcher, he seems to me a better athlete. The question for Waller might be does he block well enough to move to tight end -- 6-6, 238 as odd as it seems is kind of skinny for a tight end -- and is he fast enough for wide out? The classic copout: time will tell.

I absolutely think Smelter gets drafted. In the late rounds some team is going to take a gamble on a guy who I feel has a very high "floor" as an NFL WR. The Niners drafted Lattimore even though his career looked like it might have been done (and it was), and the Pats drafted the Florida DT who missed his last season in the first round. His tape is phenomenal, and with only 2 years playing football his potential is sky high.

Even with the injury, I think Smelter has a better chance of getting drafted than Waller. When you hear/read scouts talk about Waller, you get a lot of "he projects eventually to TE"...."Great physical tools, but very raw"..."inconsistent production".

NFL doesn't draft guys like that, maybe in the 6th/7th rounds if you're a team like the Patriots/Seahawks likes to stash guys away...but that's more priority free agent type evaluation.

When you read about Smelter, outside of the obligatory "didn't run an NFL route tree" talk, it's pretty glowing in terms of how they feel about him as an NFL prospect. Way too many questions concerning Waller even with those freak measurables.

They're showing highlights of Robert Quinn who played at UNC...GT has played against some REALLY good DLs and has really well against them

I hope Smelter gets drafted. But, due to the timing of his injury (very late in the season), it's highly unlikely that he will be available at the beginning of the pro season this year. That's the main reason I think he goes undrafted.

However, I'll bet there are several teams who will have him on speed dial the moment the draft is over to offer him a spot as a UFA.

Again, just my opinion and I'd love to be wrong here but if you use a draft pick on him, I would think it is a very risky move @ this point....given the uncertainty of the status of his knee.

In reality this is probably what most teams will do. But you just never know what the doctors may tell them about his rehab process and how it's healing. I think if he does go undrafted... he will get a deal and make a roster and probably end up starting in the right situation.

Stickum and gloves should be banned. Play ball like the rest of us. MAN up!

Have you ever caught a fully inflated leather football by someone that can actually throw it? That sh&t hurts! It hurts like a sonofabiscuit even with gloves. The point of the ball is solid as a rock, and the laces burn.

Now imagine an NFL QB with a howitzer throwing it. You can imagine their are a lot of NFL WRs with some swollen knuckles.

Makes you realize how good the good ones really are.

Man, the cobwebs of my memory bank just opened up and I remembered a sports article I read as a young lad in the 60s. It discussed the passing combination of Hanratty and Seymour at Notre Dame. Hanratty used to fire his passes in to Seymour in the off season as hard as he could to get Seymour's hands tougher for the upcoming season. Seymour frequently had broken fingers which we would just tape up. They worked on this until Hanratty's passes stuck like glue to Seymour's hands. Without any glue. Wish I knew how to find that article now.

If you remember the '60s you might recall George Mira, Miami. Drafted I believe by San Francisco and stuck for awhile, but the biggest rap on him was that all his passes were ropes, no matter how far, and his receivers said he "threw too hard." Hard to imagine in today's game.
