Thanks for the report. Did we have many unforced TO like the previous game?
Yes there were a "few" bad turnovers but not enough to make note of.Biggest short comings imo were not being able to stop there guards and attacking forwards off dribble and the inability to finish around the basket.Baye, Powell and DO could not make a lay up in the second half.
Terry,Nait,Javian and Wacie all played well and O'Brien competes so the feel was not all bad.Get Mustard back and we're good!

This game definitely made me miss Pastner's zone. And we didn't try to press until 2 minutes left and down by 15. We just looked poorly coached. I would trade their team with ours in a heartbeat. They were a pleasure to watch, although Driscoll makes Bobby Knight look peaceful.

Agree about looking poorly coached
I do t tho k I saw a set play yesterday
I have been critical of the team’s play in the loss, but jumping to “poorly coached” after 1 win and 1 loss seems a bit of an overreaction.

Maybe, but here are some examples:
  • Strategically, our defense needed a sense of urgency, and we go to the press after the game is basically over.
  • Every one of our defenders were being beat on the dribble but no change from man to man all game.
  • Our bigs go up flailing near the basket, and I assume they are looking for a foul and miss. I don't know why because they can't shoot free throws. I will give examples if you want them.
  • Can't shoot free throws.
  • I did see 1 set play coming out of a time out, but there are very few.
  • I saw many shots early in the shot clock that were not good shots. I will give examples if you want them.
  • Low basketball IQ when fouling and shooting, as in how to get a foul or how to defend
  • Bad body language
We got taken to the shed by some average at best college basketball players that look well coached and play with a high basketball IQ.

I guess @gte447f you see it differently. Why would you say we are well coached?

I saw a lot of the same things you have mentioned. I’m just not ready to say those things were due to poor coaching after only one game. I am inclined to place fault with the players first rather than the coach. If certain behaviors become trends without any apparent course corrections by the coaches, then maybe lean toward coaching. Certain behaviors though, like certain players’ ability or inability to finish contested shots at the rim or make free throws, can’t necessarily be pegged as a coaching failure. Motivation can certainly be influenced by coaching, but, as anyone with kids knows, results sometimes vary and fluctuate.

Regardless, I hope we see improvement in the games ahead. It is certainly frustrating to see the team drop these early games that they are “supposed” to win. According to media, UNF collected a $90k appearance fee along with their W for this game.

Spot-on... The fact that you have to explain this is what drives me mad about message boards. That said, the hyperbole is off the charts. We didn't run a single set play but scored 93 points..lol

I thought we'd be ready to play earlier in the week, but knowing how turned up campus was on Saturday after the victory, I wasn't the least bit surprised that we got caught looking.

It will be interesting to see how North Florida fares against UGA tomorrow night.

This is the exact same game we’ve seen over and over again. Ho hum. Until we get players who hate to lose we’ll continue to be a mid pack program. I went to the game last year in Tallahassee in December and this was the same street ball type game where we showed we simply don't have shooters of an above average category and we don’t play with any urgency. I’m sure we’ll pull some upsets in the 4 or 5 games our guys get up for but we’ll lose enough of these others to be on the bubble.

We didn’t get caught looking. They simply are a better shooting team. And shooting wins games.

This team is missing an Alvarado type guy. I know Jose is one in a million, but just that type guy. Who refuses to lose. Who won’t tolerate half efforts. Who wills his team to be better. For the better part of Sundays game our boys looked like they would rather be anywhere but on defense. And nobody lit that fire to stop the bleeding. And that worries me the most about the rest of the year. We got talent. But a disciplined organized hungry team, we are not. Yet.

Their coach seems like a certifiable psycho. I have no doubt he can motivate players to play hard.
Talked to Coach Driscoll a few times during the game (was sitting right behind their Powerade coolers). I said Coach how about showing us some 3 point shooting and he said no need to since my guys can get to the rim whenever we want. In the third quarter he came over for a drink, looked at me and said I tell you what, we'll shoot some 3s just for you. He was kidding but they were up by 17 at that point and were doing whatever they wanted offensively. Its just one game so keep the faith.

You’ve seen Javian McCollum and Luke O’Brien play two games. You said yourself, Jose Alvarado ain’t walking through that door, but you might be underestimating the new guys. Give them some time.

Personally, I think that McCollum and especially O’Brien are pretty tenacious players that are accustomed to grinding.

Let’s not hit the panic button yet guys.

Thats exactly what I said in a comment up thread. No reason to shoot 3’s when you can shoot 2’s at a 74% clip.

Our guys have to guard better. Can’t allow one guy (any guy, whoever has the ball) to drive all the way to the basket on every possession.

Now, in our guys’ defense (slightly), I did think the refs called some ticky tack fouls on our guys when they did defend well, especially in the first half, so maybe that set the tone to some degree and affected how our guys guarded for the rest of the game. I’m not blaming the refs, but it may have been a slight factor.

What I think is ironic is that I think if GT had committed to playing the same style of ball as UNF, then we could have beat them at their own game. I think our guards were superior to theirs, and Nate, McCollum, and Reeves could have got to the rim all game whenever they wanted, but we played the drive and kick game instead.

Stoudamire didn't seem to be particularly concerned in his post game presser that what we saw was something that would be hard to fix. So, I'm going to roll with the punches and see if there are recurrent themes moving forward.

NF did play really well.

Ex-NBA coaches often act like switching to a zone to try to disrupt the flow of the opposition when they are clearly shredding you is a foreign concept that only cowards would resort to.
I was just listening to the game but everything I heard was screaming “Go Zone” to me. Water’s kept talking about not being in font of players and not being able to handle players initiate contact against them. Their going zone took us out of our offense and I was thinking us going zone was an obvious move to at least try.

I saw O’Brien try to talk to the guys in the huddle a few times and be completely ignored. Like blatantly ignored. Am I alone in this observation?

This loss is equivalent to the football loss against northern Illinois a few years back. There’s no excuse. Coaches should have this team ready to play and win.
