I like CDS and think he is on the right track. With that said, the defense today was dreadful. UNF is a good team but you have to put up some resistance. I didn't see the first half but in the second half the effort on defense was poor. Reminded me of the Hawks - ole defense and can't stay in front of your man. Backup and let them shoot 3's but for god sake don't let them drive by you without making them pay with at least a karate chop foul. We just oled. With effort it can get better. CDS is going to have to pull the Bobby Knight *** on bench motivation if you don't play defense. Knight - *** on bench - bench retains *** - *** sends signal to brain - brain transmits signal to body - body gets *** off bench and plays better. CDS will deploy this soon.

I will say I think UF is pretty good. We shall see how the rest of their season goes.

Their coach seems like a certifiable psycho. I have no doubt he can motivate players to play hard.
I don't think he takes too much silliness - he several times was in various players grills.

At UNF, you get the leftover D1 players who get passed over by power schools like South Carolina and Georgia Tech. It's not hard to motivate them to do whatever it takes to beat the South Carolinas and Georgia Techs.

What? The defensive thing had nothing to do with the CDS hire part.

Otherwise, my point isn't hurt at all that he had a losing record and never took Pacific to the NCAAT. That was aimed directly at blaming the fans for being apathetic. And it isn't even about whether he did a good job at Pacific or not. It's about what his resume lacked, and that is success anywhere close to what we want here. Don't blame fans when the program has done very little to do anything to excite fans the past decade and a half. So if we want better fan engagement either win, or at the very least the next time we make a hire, make an actual splash hire.
I don't disagree that fans have zero reason to support the program, but you spent a paragraph claiming that a bad coach and bad players are behind the loss, not the fans. I'm saying that the talent is there but it takes more than talent to win basketball games. I am being 100% idealistic expecting fans to support the team. Jasai Miles is not more talented than our guards, he just actually looked like he was interested in winning the game today. We're just an unmotivated team, which I think starts with CDS but fans are not helping out on. I don't see this changing.

I don’t completely agree. UF shot fairly poorly from 3 (29%), and they still scored 105 points. They scored 52 points in the paint and shot 74% from 2 point range. If you can shoot 74% from 2 point range, there isn’t much need to shoot 3 pointers at all, but the other team has to be pretty crap on defense to allow 74% on 2 pointers.
The point is you shoot 3s which require the defense to spread out giving hood players with good ball skills lanes to drive to the basket for the easiest 2 point shots.

Basically take very few mid-range shots.

Not worried...weird game, good team who shot extremely well on contested looks...the Smith kid couldn't miss.I didn't like the fact he got wherever he wanted and the forwards protected the rim as well as they did.Powell has me concerned,in game one I noticed he couldn't guard. He can't finish at the ACC level down low either which does it for me.My bigger concern was the absence of Mustaf. After game one I feel he could have guarded people and attacked vs.a smaller frontline freeing Baye up for lobs and O boards.Nait played great,Javian is as smooth a scorer as I've seen in awhile.Terry looked assertive...Kowacie was great too.Baye lost confidence in the early second half and that bothered me.You could compile an impressive highlight reel for NBA scouts with his ability to run the floor, block shots, pass from high post, the 3 etc...but you have to play a full game. And he didnt.Hoping for opportunities for Mustaf and Sutton and less of Powell.Lastly.DO will be an NBA player...he reminds me of Naz Reid,he's everywhere throwing his enormous body around and when he gets more comfortable the jumper will become a unique weapon for such a big kid.Easy schedule and we got more heart than UGAG,that's a dub...we'll forget about this one in a few weeks.

Was the team out all night partying with the football team or something?

It would be a hard stat to track but essentially how well do basketball teams fare the day after a field-rushing football upset? I can see the logic there. I did check to see if there was an opportunity to fade Ole Miss today but no dice. They don’t play until Tuesday.

Mustaf & Sutton both out today with injuries. Mustaf is a thumb. Out at least another week. Sutton a hamstring.

Yeah, they beat our asses in every phase of the game. I’ll be surprised if they’re not a conference-winner, tournament team.
Well, we scored 93 so I think that is about as poor an assessment as our defensive performance today.

I think there is something to the joke that the team was celebrating the football win. At least I’m going to tell myself that because if we had put in a shred of effort on defense we smoke those guys. Good news it’s a good coaching moment early against a team that doesn’t really matter. If we wake up and play D we are going to be very good this year.

It certainly looked like they had a little too much fun the night before. There wasn't much energy from any of them to be honest.

The entire team seemed a bit sluggish; especially in the second half. We couldn't make free-throws, secure rebounds, or loose balls, which often led to easy points. Not a good recipe.

Yes, we did score 93, but that was because of the helter-skelter pace trying to get back into it. We missed a gazillion put backs, and we settled way too often for threes.

I realize that is part of the offense, but we have to be able to score against a zone without just chunking 3's.

Ball movement was good first half, but it slowed to a stop when they went zone.

Thanks for the report. Did we have many unforced TO like the previous game?

I didn’t get to see much of the game. Two sons’ birthday party. Disappointed. UNF looked very good. TV Teddy was a bad omen. I’ll go with the “too much homecoming” excuse and pull for the Jackets tomorrow night!
