  1. Game Day Plans or Not Watching at All?

I won't be watching, for the first time in eons. They can call the score.
  2. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Right! My old college used to get really good scores in ranking instruments on many aspects of student experience and so-so scores on others. My colleagues (and the administration) thought the obvious thing to do was to improve in the areas we were already doing well in. As I always used to...
  3. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I agree. But the main problem is that leadership is missing. Why did Paul's teams so often perform beyond their recruiting rankings? I think the main reason was that the players trusted his leadership. By that I mean that they thought that if they kept the game close, he'd find a way for them to...
  4. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Bob Devaney said it first. Someone asked him if he wanted to be sanctioned by the NCAA. Devaney: "I don't want to win enough to be placed on NCAA probation, I just want to win enough to warrant an investigation."
  5. Attendance Down Significantly (AJC)

This is, as others have mentioned, a nation-wide problem. Getting kids to attend games is more difficult these days, even if the product on the field is terrific. Why put up with the bother if you can watch the games on tv? Some stadiums are always full, off course, but they are actually few and...
  6. When it’s all said & done: J.Gibbs

Gibbs is extremely talented, but, given my druthers, I'd take Dwyer in a minute. Dwyer could have made even the OL we have now look decent. He was almost as fast as Gibbs, weighed 25 pounds more, and hit holes like a bulldozer. Now, with ND's OL, yeah, Gibbs.
  7. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I remember that game. The field conditions were almost tailor-made for Wake. We could have won, yes, but on a dry field Tech wins by 2 TDs. Unfortunately … well, let's put it this way: even Calvin couldn't make a difference on that field.
  8. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I will only comment that I'm really, really glad to see some momentum for Johnny Vaught (9 patsies and Alabama) scheduling at Tech. It's about time that we started to schedule to win instead of to lose. I know many here would love to play a tough OOC slate for ranking purposes. I've never...
  9. Everybody wants to hold the baby. Nobody wants to go through labor.

No, really, I don't want that! And, further, I don't expect that we'll see the players jumping ship in large numbers after this season. But … It is unrealistic to think that many of our better players won't be thinking things over. There's a limited shelf life for college football players. If...

All we need is something close to a break even point. That, imho, is swiftly approaching.
  11. Smelter Olive Branch

I think Smelter was open a lot, particularly under the zones, because he was a horse. He was 6'3" and 220, much larger then any WRs we have now. I remember him shrugging off DBs who were trying to get inside position on him. Our TEs should be doing this, of course, but until Yates became our QB...
  12. Everybody wants to hold the baby. Nobody wants to go through labor.

Bingo! I wouldn't be surprised if other schools aren't contacting Gibbs and, especially, Sims after this season (indirectly, of course) and their families aren't thinking things over very seriously. Whether that will result in transfer for them is another story, of course, but I do expect us to...
  13. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Well, since you asked … I really like option football, so I watch the academies as often as I can. Navy's problem is pretty obvious: they don't have a QB who can run the spread option effectively and both Army and Air Force do. Why is another story. It used to be that the Navy prep school...
  14. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

In a New York minute. If he can build a consistent winner in Starkville, he can build a consistent winner everywhere. He was, I remind everyone, 34 - 15 at Florida.
  15. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Left out 2018. If you recall, we started 1 - 3 and ended up 7 - 5. One of the best turnarounds in Tech history, especially given that we lost Benson in the second game. Oh, and 7 is greater then 3.
  16. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

One quibble: Paul was not a bad recruiter. He ran system offense and he always got the players who could do what he wanted to do. Not that he wouldn't have wanted some of the 5 star types, but he got what he needed to make the O work. The D recruiting - up to the DCs - was always decent, except...
  17. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I don't know in detail. But at the time it was widely reported that Lewis was the choice of major financial backers. I just looked on the nets and couldn't find any stories directly on point. No surprise there; most of the information we have about "big donor" dissatisfaction with Paul has been...
  18. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Yes. The problem here is that everyone has bought into the "We can't fire him because it would put us too far into debt" meme. It is now time to think seriously about just how far the program can sink with another year of the present staff and what our financial prospects will be if that...
  19. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I like what he said to Jamie Whistler (of "Whistler's mother" fame) once. Whistler was reading the Times and said, "Oscar, listen to this! 'Seen at Ascot, Mr. Oscar Wilde and Mr. James Whistler, talking about themselves as usual.' Now, Oscar, you remember: we were talking about me!" Wilde...
  20. Jordan Yates

In general, I agree; we do need improvement on the OL. However, I think the type of O makes a difference in OL performance. When he D is off balance and not sure where to commit, blocking gets a lot easier. We saw this all through Paul's tenure. Even when the OL talent was only so-so, Tech still...
