  1. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I came in from yard work during the ND game, and sat down to have something to drink and watch a little football. It was 3rd and 8ish, we were down by 14 or 17, and we had the ball. It took 3 tries to complete a 3rd down play. The first one was a motion penalty, so it became 3rd and 13. Then we...
  2. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I understand the talent deficit. I'll give Collins that, and give him another year or two to fix it. Except I don't see any evidence that the team (at whatever talent level) is being coached up. Too many offsides, too many missed assignments, too much confusion, too many puzzling decisions...
  3. Time for Public Relations

The media's job (ultimately) is to sell advertising space. Which means focusing on stories listeners, watchers, and readers are interested in. PR, or lack thereof, isn't our problem, at least in the short term. Now, if we took a long term approach to PR, things might change, but winning a few...
  4. Dickey V. wisdom for common man

Coaching is a bear of a career. For every coach who gets a big promotion, there is another who got booted out the door. If you're successful, I think you have to capitalize on it, because when/if you are unsuccessful, the Hovitos will come calling and will take your head off without remorse.
  5. GT hires Chip Long as new OC/QBs Coach

Someone would crap on anyone we hired. A young up-and-comer? No experience - Why aren't we hiring someone with experience? A guy with a successful history? Clearly a retread. Sometimes there's no way to win with fans.
  6. GT hires Chip Long as new OC/QBs Coach

Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I don't feel guys. ;-)
  7. How to Build an Efficient Offense Quickly

Lots of good teams use the concept of actually blocking the opponent.
  8. Updated Heisman odds

You left off Stetson Bennett. Oh, wait.
  9. Staff Changes

Other than Alabama, most of the elite teams touch the top 2-3 every 5 years or so but remain in the top 10 or 12 every year. If you can be top 3 multiple years running, you have a talent gap working in your favor.
  10. New Game Plan

I recognize that (legally) you cannot offer a player a NIL deal as an incentive to transfer. But I'd bet Gibbs is being told through back-channels that "If you go to X, there's a pretty good chance you could pick up a $250K/yr deal" or whatever. You know that stuff is happening all the time now.
  11. Not a bad idea. Especially for some teams we know …

There should be a decision tree with canned answers that will cover 95% of the circumstances. I'd be very happy if our HC got that 95% correct. The other 5% would be a gift from heaven.
  12. Staff Changes

There was a story earlier in the week (or weekend) that money folks had the funds committed last weekend (post ND) for a buyout and TS declined. If that was true, maybe some of the money could still be committed to hire good/great coordinators.
  13. OC and DC replacement thoughts!!

The goal is to win. I don't care (much) about who is in what role or what we pay. I guarantee going from 3 wins to 8 wins is gonna bring in more than enough money to pay for whoever we get.
  14. OC and DC replacement thoughts!!

    Better to overpay and win.
  15. OC and DC replacement thoughts!!

Allegedly, there was money on the table to pay off Collins after the ND game. I wonder if some of that could be repurposed to get "A Level" coordinators? I think it would be money well spent.
  16. OC and DC replacement thoughts!!

I'd take Mullen in a heartbeat. I'd even make him the (other) assistant HC. I'd talk about coach in waiting stuff, but no way I'd put it on paper.
  17. OC and DC replacement thoughts!!

This is true. There is little rhyme or reason to what we're doing, at least on offense. We just run plays. The good OC's find something the team is competent at, run that enough to establish a trend, then run other plays off of the same looks to throw a change-up. Alternately, they run the...
  18. OC and DC replacement thoughts!!

Thacker and Patenaude are both well paid and ought to be smart enough to stash some of the money away. If they aren't, that's on them - they chose a very unstable profession. As far as local media goes, Collins does it exactly wrong. He gives them time, but doesn't offer them anything...
