We clearly have different definitions of "Equalizer". To me, that's the term applied to how a scheme performs against teams of more talent. I.E. How well it "equalizes" the talent differential. So your example games above, all against schools that are not more-talented than we are are poor...

Agreed but I'd bet that the top 2 QBs aren't playing defense. This may be something TO showed interest in. He's a good athlete so if he's decent at CB, this gets him some PT, which is a good thing. Imagine him getting an INT and having some open field in front of him - good bye!

Re: Pitt - what adjustments did PJ make? Play by play clearly shows we just kept running QB Keepers by Marshall with some Mason thrown in. And down 21-0, the D gets no credit for giving up a FG for the entire 2nd half to allow us a chance to make a comeback, which fell just short...

But it wasn't. When teams of equal or lesser talent are stopping it (Duke, Pitt), how can it be considered an equalizer? When the elite teams are blowing it off the field, how can it be considered an equalizer? When PJ's offense first got started, the only team to destroy us was LSU in 2008...

Woody only had 1 yr. Duke and Pitt had done a pretty good job against our O for the past few years. Neither of those teams out-talent us.

I don't disagree that the D was a weakness but it played well enough to win against Pitt and Duke, 2 teams with similar talent that our offense no longer gave us an advantage against. The D can really only be blamed for USF loss in 2018. The loss to Clemson and mutts were team losses. Not...

No, the Ravens weren't running Lamar Jackson 30 times/game. Last time BALT won a Super Bowl, Joe Whacko Flacco led the way with his arm, not a bunch of stupid QB Keepers. L-Jax won't lead BALT to anything but playoff losses.

It's been a few years since the previous regime offense was much of an equalizer. 6-7 win seasons aren't anything to brag about but "was what it was" when it mercifully ended.

agreed, it was pretty clear that the unique offense wasn't giving us a real advantage any longer while still hindering our defense, for reasons discussed elsewhere, and our recruiting, also discussed elsewhere. I think the move to a scheme that more players want to play in, coupled with a...

we might gravitate to that type of offense but doubtful in 2019, given the athletes we have on the team now. Gotta coach to what you have, not what you want (disclaimer: That's just a saying and not 'throwing shade' at any particular coach - past or present)

Was our defense hamstrung in the past?

The 1999 FCS Eagles were also one of the elite FCS teams and were probably more talented than anyone on that schedule, outside of Oregon St, as your article points out. We were neither elite nor FCS during PJ's tenure. The best defense we had was not-coincidentally the most-talented: 2009.

    TECH OFFENSE

to topic, I think we'll fling it a bit more than expected, esp. if one of our QBs steps up and shows he can throw (which I think is a certainty). I think we've got a better-than-expected WR corps that's itching to do some damage. Also, I think Coach Collins wants to make a statement, of...
