    Recruiting or coaching

In principle, I agree with you. And Saban, at Alabama, faced fierce criticism from the faculty over the size of the athletics program. That is, until Nick started donating millions from the football budget towards new facilities for his biggest critics. Now, they love the football program. Not...

    Recruiting or coaching

I totally get it. I remember being in the AD suite when the Big Guns were joking "When are we going to be done with this ****?" while Tech was running up the board and winning the game. The Money Guys HATED the TO even when Tech won.

    Recruiting or coaching

CPJ once reacted to a question about recruiting along the lines of "Heck yes, we focus on recruiting." But ... there's a difference between recruiting and being good at recruiting. When Lou Holtz took over at Notre Dame, they had one person responsible for recruiting. One. Times have changed...

If you look at how the President of GT is compensated, NONE of the metrics are about athletics. And haven’t been. Ever.

Admiral James Stockdale commanded the POW's in Viet Nam, living out the war without any prisoner's rights, no set release date, and no certainty as to whether he would survive. Asked of those POW's in his unit, "Who didn't make it out?", he quipped, "The optimists". The money, the facilities...

I think what Saban has demonstrated is that IT ALL MATTERS. Recruiting, schemes, coaching, development, strength, uniforms, technology, money, fans, brand. So few coaches want to be involved in so much minutia, but it all makes a difference. It’s 100 things each contributing 1%.

Bama switched in 83. It's not as if one totally forgets conventional football. The biggest issue is the OL.

A lot of that problem was Joab Thomas, president of Alabama. He tried to change the culture of the school AWAY from football. He didn’t last.

Coaches at Tennessee refused to meet with former coaches. Two of them won national championships. I never understood that. Curry admitted he wasn’t that great a coach. So, he sought help. If I was Geoff, I would have a Zoom call after every game with Curry, GOL, Ross, and CPJ t9 discuss the...

The difference between Curry and Collins is Curry was honesty that he couldn't coach. He had Dodd tutor him. Geoff says ad nauseam that he is building an elite team but ... does he actually know how?

I remember when Bill Curry was coaching. In his third year, it seemed we would win one and lose one. Asked about it, Curry said, “I noticed that when we relax after a big win, we are flat and unprepared. We have to prepare all the time.” Sounds like deja vu all over again.

Tennessee, with all its fans, resources, and facilities ... has wandered in the wasteland for 14 years. They've been through 5 coaches and are just now getting *some* mojo back. Remember, Butch Jones was the 7th coach they talked to ... no one wanted the job. We will always be able to get...

Not exactly. Auburn barely beat Georgia State last week and Harsin fired his receivers coach, citing 8 dropped passes. Harsin reiterated that at that level of play, you don't drop passes. Fired.

Just to recap, GT makes $32 million from the ACC whether fans show up or not. I doubt TStan is losing much sleep over attendance.

This post is extremely practical. But Geoff is making $3M+ a year to field a team prepared to compete. If they are not prepared, he should say so ... and communicate the measures and milestones to ALL stakeholders and demonstrate progress. (E.g., Year 1 ... build a staff, Year 2, recruit, Year 3...

Although there is more to the story, Auburn’s coach fired his receivers coach last week, four games in. Accountability. I don’t recall Tech doing this for a very long time, if ever.
