I am most worried about their short yardage running game. They have a good one using one or two tight ends and an occasional extra OL player. We do not match up well, and we have no short yardage game in the gun with Graham.
We need to run the ball. That is obvious. The key to winning is to limit their running and win the TO battle. We have to match up with their big boys pre-snap as they are using sometimes multiple TEs and sometimes adding a sixth OL man. We ought to try something like (on run downs) using...
In the 6th overtime of the UNC and VT game UNC threw for the two points unsuccessfully. VT used their big (wildcat) QB to power run off tackle for the win. That is what P'Node needs to do with Oliver on short yardage. He can also attack the outside with the option. Graham has limited inside game...
Agree. Even many years ago the rule was your most forward part (usually tip of helmet) has to be up to the center's waist or closer. Now they let the center role the ball around and even slide it forward a bit just before snap. Also most OTs line up in the backfield by these "rules", mostly...
Shoving dead ball on 21. Holding on 73. Unsportsman dead ball on 22 (excused by Collins). Early movement on the FG 93. All these hurt. I am not upset with the 3 on #3 as he made several outstanding plays and one TFL and two of the calls were borderline. There were overall too many penalties...
I just re-watched the recorded game. On the long UM punt return we had a multitude of players caught inside. (This was a problem with out KO coverage last season.) Harvin took the proper angle to get to the sidelines ahead of the ball carrier but the rest of the pack (in view) ran what my old...
When you are up 38-7 it becomes more important to run clock than to run plays that gives your opponent opportunities to get back in the game. I don't think its taking your foot off of the gas as much as it is winning football strategy to run the clock.
There are a couple of ways (certainly more) to approach play-calling.
(1) start with a few basic calls. When one works stay with it until the other team adjusts and stops it. Note the adjustment which exposes something somewhere else. Run to the somewhere else. Rinse and repeat. This takes a...
If successful it gets us within two scores. A kick keeps us at 3 scores. The dumb move was using Yates for only one play in the game. Dumb is not a strong enough word.
We gave away two TDs that took us out of a game we were almost already out of. The blocked punt was on the punter who took too many steps. The failed fourth and 4 deep in our own territory was on coaching. Our run D stunk in the first half. Graham needs to run past the sticks out of bounds, not...
Duke's scope in its use is very limited but the rocket toss and QB follow have worked well for them in select situations. Cutcl is using it to make D's spend time in game prep and it is used sparingly like the wildcat. He is definitely not changing his O to copy CPJ, but has selected a small...
Disappointments:
Not getting the ball to our receiving playmakers often enough (Carter, Brown, Oliver). Did better in the 2nd half but not so early
In the run game not having an outside threat and very little misdirection. Under utilizing our RB talent. No option pitches?
Oliver was virtually...
Not just coverage. We misaligned twice which cost us a TD on one and a key 1st down on the other. On the TD play a player was calling for a time out before the play (he did not get it) as he saw we were not aligned sufficiently. Where were the coaches on this play?
Defense:
disappointed in all the converted 3rd and longs by UNC, especially the same old slant over the middle
on two occasions (one for a TD and the other for a 1st down) we got out flanked by the numbers and left a receiver wide open. we should at least be able to line up correctly
one first...
Been watching some Tulane O. I really like some of Fritz's run scheme. Lots of quick hitting misdirection. We have the RBs to do that. It is quick, deceptive, and effective. We have the power backs (Mason/Malloy/Howard) and speed backs (D Smith/Griffin/Oliver) and running QBs. All out of the...
I was wondering how Temple scored their running TDs so easily so I watched the replay. Our outside player on the LOS lined up with outside leverage on the TE. There was a DB behind him. On the snap (whether a mistake or directed) the player gave up outside leverage and drove to the inside...
