The lineup that year didn't really fit together well. Favors and Lawal played the same position. The wings were not good ballhandlers. Hewitt played Shumpert a fair amount at the point because he thought that was his NBA position. Shumpert played the 3 in the NBA.
It was a sloppy squad.
Bobby had tremendous energy. He did more appearances, like this one you mentioned, than any coach of any sport that I know about. He came to our fraternity once a year and would field any questions. He is one charismatic guy.
GT needed someone like him at that time. I don't think someone who...
I understand this is how most fans look at it. I just don't think that is how it will play out.
The shoe companies have been attaching themselves to basketball players since the '80s (funneled through AAU mostly). That is the model I see going forward.
If don't think the collectives can...
I think GT should be a solid player in it but it will take a little longer. The corporate sponsorship opportunities within 12 blocks alone are enormous. That's where I think this ends up, corporate sponsorships through a "collective", essentially a marketing firm, for paid appearances...
He specifically talked about spacing and sharing the ball being the key to the Celtics' success. Poor spacing was one of the key factors in this past season being lost, despite the February change in the offense showing that the team indeed had the talent to be decent.
You left off that his first 3 years at Pacific were on probation with limited scholarships. He won over 20 games in year 4 and tied with St. Mary's for 3rd place behind Gonzaga and BYU. Both of those were in the top 15.
Jeff Capel has had one good year at Pitt, with a team filled with old transfers. I'd like to aim higher than that.
A better comparison would be Javon Howard at Michigan, but with some college head coaching experience where he helped a team on probation his first 3 years to win over 20 in year 4.
The WCC is very imbalanced. Gonzaga is a national power. BYU was in the top 15 that year. Pacific tied with the other basketball power, St. Mary's.
That is an impressive feat that should not be discounted with no context.
