The basketball people I know told me Pastner didn't run an offense of any kind at Memphis. More than one SEC coach who played against Memphis told a TV guy I know that Memphis, at that time, was the worst coached team he had ever seen.

The only thing I'd add to that is both Coleman and Moore improved at the end of the year, which is obviously encouraging. Part of the improvement came from running an offense with better spacing but that doesn't discount their progress.
UNC was the best program in the country then. They went to the sweet sixteen thirteen straight years from '81-'93. It is probably more impressive that they finished 3rd or better in the ACC regular season all of those seasons. The league was very difficult. Top players stayed 3 or 4 years.
