  1. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

What opposing cornerbacks and outside linebackers were saying...among other choice expletives.
  2. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

"If he is fired and replaced, it will start another rebuilding era." Very true but that has not stopped a half a dozen perceived (by their ADs and fan bases) underachieving programs from doing precisely that hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Miami and Virginia Tech for starters. I think...
  3. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

In the old days, a 7 point lead in the 4th quarter was good as gold. Now? Miami could not hold a double digit lead in the 4th quarter against FSU with just minutes to play. It is a brave new world but defensive coordinators and head coaches continue to try and sit on a lead and play safe...
  4. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Many a time at BDS and especially at Florida Field I was barely restrained from bringing a gun and shooting that guy in the red hat. For some reason, it SEEMED like the timeouts were longer and more frequent at Florida games which may have been due to opposing coaches trying to slow down the...
  5. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Come to think of it, even Florida has not been overflowing like it used to be. Good thing college football has lucrative television contracts to fall back on because if it were still depending upon ticket sales, concessions, parking, and the like, it would be in some trouble at most schools.
  6. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

"If it ain't swaying, we ain't playing" or so the tale goes.
  7. Game 11 #GTvsND Media

"Nice things to say about GT" Facing a defense as poor as this one, Coach Kelly can afford to be magnanimous.
  8. Justin Fuente out at Virginia Tech

Seems to be the only alternative unless you are a factory like LSU. I am still kind of surprised that Virginia Tech let Fuentes go with 43 wins in 6 years. Perhaps, the BC game this year was the straw that broke the camel's back. He may not be the only one as there are rumblings from South...
  9. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Well that is the state university. South Carolina has put up with mediocrity for years yet William Brice is always full. Tech does not have that luxury. Nor does Miami it would seem.
  10. Justin Fuente out at Virginia Tech

Yep. That is correct. I got it mixed up. 43 wins seems pretty reasonable for 6 years. Poor Frank was given longer, I suppose, because of his ties to the program as a former defensive back.
  11. Jordan Yates

Yates makes quick decisions and he gets that ball out in a hurry. Sims has more upside but the game is still a bit fast for him...especially with the matador line in front of him.
  12. Justin Fuente out at Virginia Tech

Upon further review, Frank was hired in 1987 and went 2-9. After 6 years of futility, his record at Virginia Tech stood 22-40-1 which is remarkably similar to Fuente's record in Blacksburg. It wasn't until 1993 that the Hokies had what could be called a successful year with Coach Beamer going...
  13. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Commendable but after back to back to back 3 win seasons it becomes harder to justify the time and expense when there are other things to do on fall afternoons.
  14. Justin Fuente out at Virginia Tech

Pretty much. I am rooting for Geoff to get it fixed because the alternative is about a decade of fumbling around. Love him or hate him, we are stuck with him. IIWII
  15. Justin Fuente out at Virginia Tech

Curious. He did win 43 games against 31 losses. Took Virginia Tech to 4 bowls while winning only 1. His best years were the first two when the Hokies went 10- 4 and 9-4. Virginia Tech is currently 5-5 with only a now tainted first game win against then #10th ranked UNC to brag about. They...
  16. Attendance Down Significantly (AJC)

It's pretty bad but I have seen some pretty sparse crowds in my time. The late 1970s and early 1980s with Pepper and Curry were almost as bad at times unless we were playing Auburn, Clemson, Georgia or Tennessee.
  17. Justin Fuente out at Virginia Tech

Geoff is not going anywhere any time soon. This is his program so let him run it. We simply cannot afford to fire him. FSU and Miami can go through coaches like a box of candy but we cannot afford that luxury and it is not the solution. Virginia Tech, once upon a time, stuck with Frank...
  18. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

You are damn right I am a fan of winning. People are NOT going to pay money to see losers. Geoff will, for better or worse, be judged by how many games he wins not the perceived effort of the players, or the progress they make, or how many make it in the "league".
  19. Justin Fuente out at Virginia Tech

You will recall that when Fuentes was hired, he was widely considered the "next big thing" among upcoming college coaches. That said, any coach who follows a legend can expect nothing but grief for their trouble. What do Ray Perkins, Bud Carson, JB "Ears" Whitworth, Johnny Griffiths, Bill...
  20. Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Believe it or not, these things can turn around in a heart beat. Florida for years was derided as the worst underachieving team in the SEC. Bear Bryant famously said: "How do you expect those boys to play football with all those scantily glad girls running around?" Charley Pell was not...
