I personally believe that Kiffin will eventually implode again, at Ole Miss, or AU, or Bama-wherever he winds up longterm the wheels will fall off again. And to whoever said if GT could get him he would be the best coach we hired in decades- CPJ beat his tail when he was coaching at SoCal, what does that say?

"Implode"? Hey sometimes you gotta fly close to the sun to get tha glory, Icarus.

On a serious note though, I felt the exact same about the guy but I can't deny his post-USC results. If I saw them on paper, and didn't have to see his imminently punchable face, that'd be a homerun hire.

I said the worst case scenario. The worst case with any coach is they fail spectacularly. But Key failing spectacularly after being a part of the staff that just did that exact thing just for him to be promoted from within brings an aspect that doesn't exist with any other name hired. It would be an absolute embarrassment and make the president look like a fool in a way no other hire would. Hire any other coach and they go 3-9 next year and the story will be they need time to fix the mess inherited. Key does that and it's a completely different story. At least in the case of the other options it looks like we are even trying to be serious. Promoting from within the clown show we had says the exact opposite.

Sorry, if anyone looks at how we've played since the bye week and thinks Key is the guy we need I really don't know what to say. But I guess if you can convince yourself that Collins alone was the sole reason why the past 3 years happened and that the number 2 guys played no part because of what you read on a message board then you can convince yourself of anything.

The other side of that is if you're set in your opinion about someone, regardless of circumstances or outcomes playing out in front of you, you can just dig your heels in and keep saying the same thing over and over. At least you're consistent with that.

If Batt even considers Key, which I think he won't, then I would personally have no confidence in his ability to analyze situations at Tech or anywhere else. Personally, I don't think Key is even being considered. If he were to win out, he might be extended an interview but only as a "Thank You for your efforts".

Personally, I think Key would have had to win at such a level that Batt didn't have a choice. Playing UGA competitively, going to the ACCCG, and going to a bowl and winning it would have been the bar.

Key is not going to meet that bar.

I would think he's still got a small shot if the Jackets win the next two and play Ugag to within 3 TDs or so. He'd be 5-2 against the ACC. Winning the bowl game wouldn't help, though. Surely the decision will be made by then.

So you think Kiffin would be the best coach at Tech in decades? Do you think he’s is a better coach than PJ? Give them equal talent to play each other who wins? Kiffin is a complete douchbag Who has failed upward his whole life shouldn’t that factor into the equation?
1. Kiffin as a hire would be the biggest hire for us in my lifetime at least. that would be the first time we went home with the belle of the ball in forever. if he would do better than paul, either way is kind of a guess but there is no doubt that his resume at the p5 level is above johnson’s at the time of the hire considering johnson had not been at that level

2. the equal talent argument does not hold any weight whatsoever and in college has nothing to do with you as a coach. a major part of coaching is bringing in talent and kiffin is better at that for some reason. it can’t possibly be the option though as we have had lengthy discussions in other threads about how the option doesn’t effect recruiting. kiffin is just a better recruiter apparently

3. running one of the top offenses in the country at bama (including one winning a championship)to coaching at fau and having the best three year stretch in school history after the school won 3 games for 3 straight years, then earning a job at ole miss where he has been great is the furthest thing from falling upwards.

if you dislike kiffin that is fine because he seems like an ******* occasionally, but the guy is a tremendous football coach. there is no way he’s coming here as we are not fishing in that same pond anyway but if you think he’s a bad coach then you’re kidding yourself

Wrong. Key is a real option and will get a formal interview no matter what. Winning gets you interest from the AD and he’s winning.

It would be interesting to find out the grouping of voters for each candidate. Chadwell has the majority of votes (132); my guess is that most of these voters do not personally know Chadwell and are swayed by his coaching record.

I add two groups together (Key 61 and O'Brien 16) for a total of 76 votes; my guess is that it is basically a combination of those who know them personally, plus some who have come on board because Tech has won a few lately under Key.

The third group (56) want Sanders; my guess is they are probably the younger fans and players who generally have heroes and know him news-wise from his accomplishments in football.

This really means nothing other than a thought.

Your standards of winning are a lot lower than mine. So far, he had one noteworthy win, Pitt, who by the way, has a 2-3 record in conference. Otherwise, he beat a horrid VPISU team by one point, beat a moderately good Duke team in OT, lost to a really bad UVA team, and got blown out by FSU.

Regardless, Key is not competing against Collins for this job. It does not matter how many more wins he has vs. what Collins did. He is competing against other coaches who have much better track records. Unless we win out, the probability he gets hired is extremely low unless everyone on our list turns us down.

Do you know for sure he is getting an interview? Do you know if it is a serious interview?

Well one of them can't get good talent because good talent doesn't want to play in his system. That matters. Yeah, I think Kiffin is one of the top college coaches in the country right now.

I mean if Key can get us to 6 wins in a bowl game and somehow keep the Georgia game respectable then he's got my vote and I'm one of those guys that does put alot of blame on him for our Oline performance.

My standards of winning aren’t low. You have to look at context. You rarely see IHC’s win games during the season since most teams give up, quit on the season and just write the season away. That hasn’t happened with Key. Key has barely anytime during the week to change things and put his full emphasis on it. The Collins stink will be here for the rest of the season since that’s who the kids were coached and led by all off season. What I’m saying is, he’s winning in a non normal way. You rarely see IHC’s win and he’s winning as a IHC. You have to sit here and think about what a Georgia Tech football team that went through the winter, spring, summer and fall program under Brent Key would look like. He’s already got 3 wins without being able to have any off season influence on these kids other than his position group.

I think we should narrow our search down to someone who: has never run a triple option offense ( or any derivative there of), never been fired, never been on GT staff before, not currently a G5 coach, not a coordinator who doesn’t have 100% support from the fans, never been a NFL coach (‘cause they can’t relate to college players), aren’t currently position coaches, haven’t proven to be elite recruiters, or has ever been associated with Temple. Should be easy to find a qualified candidate.
Ok OK I'll take the job.

I don't know if you truly understand what a challenging job the HC at GT is. It is truly unique in all of college football. And the name we are discussing here who knows that the best is Key. As a player and a coach. Full disclosure: I voted Chadwell. But I'm rooting for Key. Truly.

Key is doing his interviews on the field week-week. I still say if he gets us to 6 wins he’s probably the favorite

If you know it for sure; then I will take your word for it, but my guess is that it will not be a serious interview.
i feel like if you are an interim coach and at least show some positive uptick in performance you will get an interview 99% of the time. whether that interview is gonna lead to anything is probably dependent on a million factors.

i don’t want key honestly but i find it hard to disagree that he at least deserves an honest interview.

I understand context. I also understand the quality of players we have on the team and the quality of teams we have played. We have one win against a team we should not have beat and a loss against a team we should have beat. The net result is 0 more wins than what we should have regardless of who was coach. We should win again this weekend but will probably lose the final two games. Even if he beats UNCheat, I still would not consider Key for head coach unless all other options backed out.

He will be getting an interview, just like I said.
The thing that most people don't understand that most the people we talk about on here don't want to come to Tech and coach. One thing you don't want to do is interview coaches and have them say no. I have NO problem if wel try Key but don't do a 7 year deal , 4 years with no buyout may work. From what I have seen the players are playing hard for him.
