anyone remember how easy Byerly was playing pitch and catch with Waller at the end of the Duke game? It looked unstoppable, he was just putting it up there where nobody else could catch it.
I remember it well and keep hoping CPJ would put Byerly in for series to take some pressure off TJ5 and let him stand by CPJ and get coached up on what is going on. I do not cringe when Byerly goes in. In fact I would like to see a wildcat formation of Days Byerly and Perkins with TJ5. 2 good running and passing QBs a running QBs and a blocker.

Smelter was a great route runner who had a knack for finding holes in the defense, getting open and making tough catches. Waller is more of a tight end who can post up like he would as a power forward. The thing that sort of kills us with losing Smelter is that he was the guy we could go to when it was 3rd and 8 to extend drives. He and Waller are two different types of players. Waller can't replace Smelter. We're going to have to replace Smelter in the aggregate. Waller may get some deep balls, but those aren't typically high percentage throws, even in our offense. My hope is that we can manage to convert third and longs via passes to the a-backs. We also haven't really seen a full-back screen this year either. Aside from Zenon, I can't really think of any a-back that's had a particularly decent year catching the ball, so its going to be tough.

This is a good point that I've thought of as well, but don't we do other things that are similar? The Qb counter that we did against NC state comes to mind.

Which basically gets the ball to a player in space with lead blockers....

We also haven't really seen a wheel-route to the b-back, but the screen and the wheel-route aren't really 3rd and 8 type plays. At some point we're going to have to complete passes to convert third and mediums/longs, and I don't know how we're going to do it unless the a-backs can get open.

Deon Hill made several 3rd down plays against the mutts. He's our next up go-to-guy, imo.

Hitting a long pass play to one of our WR's early would help a lot. That would give the comeback more space. The way I understand it though is that our guys usually have options on their routes. If the defender turns his hips and isn't beat on the go route, then we break it off to the comeback. So, the go route has to be a viable threat to make that defender commit to covering it. We know Waller can catch a deep ball. I think Summers has the speed to beat a guy deep so that they should have to respect it. But, if they don't we'll need to be able to complete one to those two guys.

That chemistry between Smelter and JT has been unreal this year. It seemed JT knew exactly when Smelt was going to break his route off and put it in the right spot. And, then sometimes JT would do that back shoulder throw to have Smelt break it off that way. Those kinds of things well executed by capable athletes are virtually uncoverable. I'm hoping there's bottled up chemistry between JT and Summers/Waller that's just been on standby while Smelter has been dominating.

Michael Summers, Corey Dennis and Ricky Jeune could replace Smelter. What about Antonio Messick? All 4 could play snaps and complement Waller. Go Jackets!

I don’t think Juene has seen the field all year. It would be very risky to try and bring him out in the ACCCG. You never know if he’ll miss some key blocks or break off a route incorrectly and cause JT to throw a pick. The risk is a bit too high IMO. I’d rather stick with Waller, Summers, and Dennis. Maybe Messick in certain passing situations.

I'll bet we throw to the A-backs a bunch this week. I look for a wheel route early. Wouldn't surprise me to see the B-back slip out and catch a pass...particularly The Laskinator.

I just wanted to say that I LOVED that play against NC State. I'm not sure the exact read that that play was a reaction to (and we only ran it that game, so it makes me think it was a response to the way they were playing us), but I want to see more. That's a lot of beef leading the way for JT on the edge!

I bet Tony and Deon go off catching passes.

If FSU plays us anything like they played Citadel, you're right. They sold out to stop the run (still gave up 250 yards rushing) and Citadel had guys running WIIIIDE open downfield. Problem is they couldn't block long enough to get it to them, and the receivers dropped a lot of passes. We've shown the ability to make those plays this year, so I'm excited about the opportunity.

Juene was in at Georgia and I think before. Not sure how much he played or has played but red shirt burned per the roster.

the WRs are CRITICAL to the Off.My guess is until we prove we can burn the CBs ,the safeties will be coming HARD almost every play.
