Smelter was a great route runner who had a knack for finding holes in the defense, getting open and making tough catches. Waller is more of a tight end who can post up like he would as a power forward. The thing that sort of kills us with losing Smelter is that he was the guy we could go to when it was 3rd and 8 to extend drives. He and Waller are two different types of players. Waller can't replace Smelter. We're going to have to replace Smelter in the aggregate. Waller may get some deep balls, but those aren't typically high percentage throws, even in our offense. My hope is that we can manage to convert third and longs via passes to the a-backs. We also haven't really seen a full-back screen this year either. Aside from Zenon, I can't really think of any a-back that's had a particularly decent year catching the ball, so its going to be tough.
