Will Roof get the message??????

A dc should scheme to compensate for lack of talent. By playing a defense predicated on winning one on one battles he isn't really doing that is he? In fact, he's exacerbating the effect of our talent deficiency, isn't he?
I don't know, I'm no expert. Vamos thinks no, 33 thinks yes. One of those guys played for Tenuta... the first guy.

I don't think Johnson is sending a message through the media. He supposedly already told Roof all this in meetings. What he said on his show tonight was simply in answer to questions posed to him. Roof definitely needs to listen though. How could he call a blitz on one play Saturday and see it result in a loss and then not blitz on the following play (3rd and long)? And that 3rd and long play ended up giving them (as usual) a first down. Why would you not blitz, or at least put some pressure, on Pitt on 3rd and long? Makes no sense

It's literally the late 90s d all over again. I went and watched some film. Maybe longest days or someone can juxtapose the Clemson game where we played prevent all game with roofs current scheme.

As for the secondary, he wants the players to challenge the WR more for the ball instead of just hoping that they would drop the ball.
The receivers don't even worry about foot steps. We need to get receivers out of rhythm, make them work to get lose. We seldom have pressure on the receiver as he catches the ball.
Stop worrying about interference on deep throws, it is 15 yards instead of 30 in college.

If you listen to the radio show or post practice notes the past 2 weeks, CPJ is making it very clear what he wants to see from the defense. He's mentioned over and over we need to blitz more and quote "more importantly, we got to play press and quit playing so far off." He even specifically said we didn't blitz enough vs Pitt. Will Roof wake up and get the memo?
our DC absolutely is bad, paul is getting involved and telling him what he wants to see, and paul is now telling us what he is telling Ted. Because its that bad. Normally this stuff is taken care of in the film rooms and fixed, actually normally a good DC would see it and fix it on his own....but....in our case, paul is relaying to the media and fanbase what is going on. Its unique to me. Last time i recall this happening:

was LOL George Oleary and you guess it....who was the DC? LOL ROOF baby.

What is odd is Roof inherited a miserable defense and it stank about the same in his first year under GOL. But for some reason GOL kept Roof and the next two years we had Ds ranking in 30s and 20s with Roof being nominated for Broyles asst coach of the year for the job he did.

Not only that but GOL hired Roof AGAIN at UCF before another coach who had coached with Roof firsthand at Tech-Billy O'Brien- stole him away to Penn St.

Both O'Brien and GOL are well-regarded coaches. Something just doesn't add up with your constant attacks on Roof. Meanwhile it'spainfully obvious our DL and DE struggle to win any 1-on-1 battles in the pass rush,we lost a crapload of DL to start with, and our struggles to recruit DL areWell documented.

l played LB on a nationally ranked D3 defense and the war Daddies make all the difference. You need a front7 and particularly a DL or you WILL struggle.

Bobinski even has come out and statedthe obvious, saying we need to recruitbetter. There is only so much you can do with what we have now.

l respect your opinion and agree in many areas but this is not one of them.

Even when we blitz, it doesn't work if you can't cover. They were like 6 of 7 on third down attempts at one point. Seems like we blitzed every third down, but their receivers were wide open.

I think some statements are being read way out of context here. I'm not going to add to it by psychoanalyzing people through press conferences, other than to say "nothing to see here, move along".

I hear you....remember friendship in coaching is many times bigger than the quality of the coach

I also agree talent is needed. But you have to match the scheme too. What ted runs, how he teaches, and the results on the field (at tech) and the scheme he deploys frankly is bad.

Anyway, look, I am not a Ted fan. As all can probably tell. And it didn't start as a preconceived agenda, what gave me the agenda is his senseless scheme and issues on D. It took time. If you look at my posts last year i was a ted defender and supporter. But this year I dropped it bigtime...and I see nothing out of his playcalling, scheme, players execution to turn my opinion.

He look, I get we can use more talent. Who can't? But are we 118 bad in talent? No FREAKING WAY. And that is part of my point. We should be a mid 60s D that is not a ridiculous expectation. In fact its a sad one that mediocrity at that level IS the expectation. We are that...and we are still undefeated.

which is ironic, because John T did the most with solid or ok talent than anyone in the NCAA.

FYI, a best buddy of mine played for Tenuta too, actually started for him for 4 years and feels the same way I do.

at this point, there is a philosophical thing on how you teach, scheme and do D and you can use our "talent" as the excuse or not. Its not an excuse for not being at Top 60 D IMO. It is an excuse for not being a top 30 D however. We do not have the talent to field a top 30 D. I agree

We have to talent to be a TON better than we are.

THAT, is my point and for me and my opinion, better scheme and better coaching is a big step to getting there.

Greyson Lambert is not very mobile. But we have to do something to move him off his spot or he will be very effective. Virginia protects him fairly well and has a running game that makes you respect play action. This looks like another Saturday in which we will need 40 points to win.

I see your point. I still think it's super hard to scheme around a completely ineffective D-line. You have to bring guys from the back seven which leaves you vulnerable, especially when you still can't get pressure.

We don't have corners who can man up or have ball skills.
We don't have safeties that consistently fill their assigned gaps.
We don't have lb's who can cover eligible receivers and try to do too much in the run game, thus getting out of position.

I still can't get my head around your talent eval on our players. None of them are sure tacklers. Seems to me you're overvaluing our current personnel while at the same time undervaluing Tenuta's personnel. We had a pretty stout front seven when Tenuta was here.

Maybe Tenuta could get more out of current D than Roof. I'd bet it was his decision to leave when CPJ was hired so pining for him is absurd, he didn't want to be here anymore. He thought he was head coaching material, well, we see how that worked out for him.

I think everyone recognizes we need to blitz more, we get beat on a play we just get beat.

I know we all want to win, and win as many games as we can, but our season won't be significantly more "successful" if we go 2-2 or 3-1 down the stretch. I would take some chances on defense and see what happens. Unless there is some bonafide hope that we could win the division by staying the present course, we need to let it rip.

Something else to add to this mix. When asked earlier in the year about playing tighter, PJ said something like "you risk getting beat deep when you do that." Last night in the defense discussion he said something kinda funny to the effect that "it's not like anything we do could make us any worse." I'm thinking maybe this is a change for both PJ and Ted. Earlier maybe they were thinking a more cautious approach was best, but now, having seen a hundred 10 yard completions for first downs, they're ready to try tighter coverage.

I also have to think back to VT and Miami. Our defensive approach made Ted look pretty smart in those games.

I think it's all about the situation. What's the situation call for? If it's 3rd and 10, our guys shouldn't line up 10-12 yards off the WR AND back pedal even further after the snap. If the WR is going over the top, we've got to make sure our safeties are helping because our CBs need to be responsible for preventing the WR from getting the first down in front of them. Now if it's 1st or 2nd and 10, the offense can pass or run, so it's OK for CB to play with a bigger cushion.

I used this example earlier, when it was 3rd and 10 late in the game, DJ White was easily 10-12 off the CB before the snap. After the snap, DJ was backpedaling even further off the WR...and when the WR broke, DJ wasn't even in position to make a play on the ball or contest the catch because he took himself out of position. It's obvious where the WR needs to get to because there's a marker there and the scoreboard tells you what the other teams needs. Luckily the QB threw a bad ball or else Pitt would have converted.

DJ White is supposedly our best CB, and his speed is obviously not a liability, so why the heck is he lined up so far off the CB in the situation? I don't think we can say "Our CBs shouldn't line up X yards beyond the WR" or "Our CB need to jam the WR and line up closer"....each situation and down is different and calls for different alignments on defense. In that situation what DJ did was clear sign of lack of situational awareness. To me, that's on the coaches if our players are constantly displaying lack of situational awareness.

That has been my contention all year. We are 5-10 yards from the receiver every time they catch the ball. Our pass defense is hope they drop the pass or overthrow the receiver.

Coach agrees, he said so on his radio program. "We need to challenge them (receivers) more. Make them beat you..."

First see my other reply to you on how important players being in the right position to make a tackle improves tackling. Certain types of schemes can help that.

Second let me point out we had this same discussion in 2011. It was the jimmy and joes, and we just were flat out bad up front. Yet, we altered the scheme and low and behold week over week improved on D. With the same "bad joes". Oh really...bad joes? Lets see. Barnes is in the NFL. Sneezy, in the NFL. Dieke...in the NFL, watts, in the nfl, thomas was in the nfl but an awesome player. So was it bad joes? How does a D improve mid year on a flip of a hat if scheme isn't important? Now were they world beaters...no....were they statistically significant in improvement YES.

You know what? On this D? Right now...Gotsis will have a nfl shot as a SDE. Freeman may not be an nfl player, but he will be every bit as productive as sneezy. Green is a serviceable 1tech and has done actually a good job this year...held double teams nicely. The other end is a dumpster fire you and I know that. But the point is....that DL is not a 118 in the country DL. Maybe a 60 in the country DL. Look at the teams from 60-80 in the country in a few of the D categories and really tell me we have FAR less talent, DOUBLE the less talent?

This is my point. DO YOU REALIZE WE ARE DEAD LAST IN THE COUNTRY IN POWER 5 D?

Hear that again. LAST. So are you really saying our talent is that bad? No f-in way. This is the problem with this debate. The perspective I am taking isn't roof to Tenuta....I am saying Roof to just being a top 60 D.

If I was saying roof to tenuta, ie top 30 d with this talent. You guys are right. There is NO WAY.

I am saying, that with this talent, under JT this is a top 60 D. And I believe it. Under roof it won't be.
