I think Beyonce winning the country Grammy will bend that genre a bit also. Here is NC we have Rissi Palmer filling venues as a black female country artist. Change is the constant.
Sometimes there’s no argument, it’s just pick your fave. From your list, Jack, Maryanne, Jones, and Russell. This is like the Tiger vs Jack, Ginger vs Maryanne, Jones vs Hamilton or the Russell vs Chamberlain debates. I could argue each side and believe I was right, depending on the day. Maybe it's more like picking your favorite child though - you love them all equally and reccognize the strengths and weaknesses of each. (This is a copout I know). The part of me that really likes the blues has a special fondness for Chess.
I have lived in Tennessee for many years now. I am amazed that pretty much all forms of current modern music was originated out of Bristol on the east side and Memphis on the west side. Although the "hillbilly" country and bluegrass music migrated to Nashville and the blues/soul music spread up to Chicago and Detroit, current modern music has its origins in this state. Not to say music wasn't popular or being made elsewhere - it's just that the original radio and recording studios of this type of music was done in Bristol and Memphis.

I have not heard Beyonce's album. If you have, care to share your thoughts? I do recall Ray Charles dipping into the genre with his "Modern Sounds in Country Music" back in the 60's that really influenced the genre going forward. Still remains one of my favorite records of all time.I have recently seen War and Treaty in concert and you should check them out if you haven't already. great artists but maybe more "Americana" or "grass roots" than country although definite elements of gospel, soul and funk in their sound. If i am not mistaken, isn't Rhiannon Giddens out of NC as well. She is another great artist and I have to imagine you have seen her given your background in music.I think Beyonce winning the country Grammy will bend that genre a bit also. I loved that we were wrenched back into reconsidering what “country” even means. My complaint about Nashville for years has been that they took a broad genre of music and squeezed it down into a formula that’s almost become a parody of itself.I think Beyonce winning the country Grammy will bend that genre a bit also. NE, I respect your opinion in many things, but on this I think S78 makes the correct score of 100%. Your 50% will get you a B- with the curve however. We need to see what he says on the Chess, Stax, motown thing before final grades are assigned.Sometimes there’s no argument, it’s just pick your fave. The Beyoncé album is “all over” the place. It defies any one description. One or two songs “sound” country in the formulaic way we’ve come to regard country. But she reminds us that lots of music was considered country long before Nashville told us country music could only sound a certain way. Some of the original country music got recategorized once “country” became a particular brand. So some country became country blues, or Americana, or rap, or folk, or swing.I have not heard Beyonce's album. If you have, care to share your thoughts? Note, I didn’t pick favorites. I picked the ones that “scored” when it counted. I’m prepared to go to the Dean about my score.NE, I respect your opinion in many things, but on this I think S78 makes the correct score of 100%. Your 50% will get you a B- with the curve however. Yes, Rhiannon is from Greensboro. She and I have friends in common, but I have never met her. I have been to several of her concerts including when she was with the Carolina Chocolate Drops.I have not heard Beyonce's album. If you have, care to share your thoughts? Go to the dean if you need to… the only close one was Jones/Ham and SJ won the natty. Case closed. Also, had the Jackets completed the win vs F$U in ‘92, that season would have been special as well, and SJ would have bagged about 35 wins, too. Alas….Note, I didn’t pick favorites.
