I'm assuming Hurter is indeed done & Curry will be ready for Duke series (worst case). That's with no inside info... just based on @RoosterJacket 's info.

But I would say Tech has powered through a lot of injuries: Murray, Archer, Mannelly, Curry, English.
Worst case is Curry may be ready for Pitt series. If he’s not ready for next Friday, maybe he can go Sunday at Duke. Hurter might be have TJ coming.....if so, he likely won’t be back for next season either.

Bad news so I couldn't like. Thanks for the info.

X resting till Sunday Duke game makes a lot of sense if he is pitching well. If he isn't accurate, then he'll get hit a lot. And then he could sit out the Pitt series if need be.

Hurter getting TJ at end of So year is really bad for both of us. Expected case is out next year (rSo) and then comes back following year (rJr). TJ pitchers usually take all season to get sharp again and he'll probably go low in the draft if he is coming into form at the end of his rJr year. So he is probably lost for good from making a meaningful contribution to GT. But hopefully what ever it is is fixed and he goes to minors and does well. IIWII.

Georgia Tech baseball suffers a big loss. Brant Hurter to undergo surgery.

8:54 AM - 3 May 2019

Just connecting the dots.
I'm sorry this has happened to Brant mostly. He seems like a good kid, hard worker, and bright. GT baseball has the worst luck.

Really bad news for Hurter.

Regarding the dots, I didn't realize that future dots were in play.

What’s really bad is Curry is out for the season?
Announcers said shoulder muscle issue? I’m not sure if that is bad like a torn labrum or just a muscle strain.
So recap, lost the Friday and Sunday starters.
Can it get any worse?

It's what he was dealing with earlier. Probably should be back next week or at the latest by the Pitt series.

Just connecting the dots by observation and what another member on this forum said about talking with a baseball player's family disclosing that Hurter is possibly out for this season. And knowing full well through observation that when a pitcher is hurt then usually TJ surgery is next. Mannlley and Archer are the most recent GT pitchers that come to mind.
Or a woman's intuition.

This is a nit pick but that's not always true. TJ is an elbow surgery. So if you're having something like shoulder or back issues then you're probably not going to need elbow reconstruction surgery. But he had forearm tightness that he couldn't shake which as I said somewhere else in here does usually lead to TJ. As we've seen you weren't wrong to connect them the way you did.

I just read this...
The Pitching
  • Starting pitcher Brant Hurter had to leave after just one inning. He gave up an unearned run and struck out one in his outing. Hurter continues to have issues with his forearm.
  • Freshman Cort Roedig settled the game with five good innings of relief. He allowed three runs, but two of those game on a fluke play. With the bases loaded and two outs, Clemson’s Jordan Greene hit a towering popup that should have been the third out. But Jackson Webb lost the ball in the sun and Luke Waddell couldn’t quite get there in time to make a heroic catch. It bounced halfway between home and third base and two Clemson runners scored.
  • The rest of the bullpen didn’t fare as well: five pitchers combined to give up seven runs on seven hits.
BaseballNotebookBaseball.png
Between the Lines Keyton Gibson was ejected for hitting a Clemson player after the umpire issued a warning to both teams following an incident in the fifth when the Tigers hit Kyle McCann and Tristin English back-to-back. Coach Danny Hall was then ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Derek Mollica. Clemson reliever Holt Jones got heaved in the ninth when he hit Luke Waddell with a pitch, which led to the ejection of Clemson coach Monte Lee. Hall faces a possible one-game suspension and Gibson may face a four-game suspension. …

Does that mean no more Hurter this season and probably next season( I think so), and Gibson suspended? Tough blow for the end of season stretch.
Losing Hurter is definitely a big blow but Gibson not so much. He has mental blocks now and then. I have believed for several years now that our biggest problem is the pitching coach. I'm am definitely not blaming Jason Howell for all the arm injuries but DAMN, it's like he's been bad juju since he's been here. I know Tommy John surgeries are up everywhere but man, we have had waaaay too many. Plus I haven't been impressed with his recruiting ability. We used to have at least, 5 good, reliable arms. Bobby Moranda is going nowhere at WCU, maybe he will step down and come back to Tech. Just kidding kinda. Bottom line, until Danny can find a good pitching coach we are gonna stay on a roller coaster ride pitching wise.

Gibson has a lot of talent. Just hasn't been able to put it all together. Perhaps he'll figure it out for the post season. We can always use more quality pitchers down the stretch.

We are still flawed.

Hard to complain about winning though.

Just this nagging though in the back of my mind that as the competition ramps up in the ACC tourney and beyond, we will not be able to win games the way we won tonight.

Agree. Need Xay healthy. Need the defense to be a touch better.... IF we're going to be able to beat the postseason competition and advance along. Theoretically, we could outscore good teams too. But I'm with you... postseason success will require most games where we limit runs of the opponent.

We are flawed. You don't give up 10 runs to Duke 2 games out of three and expect to go to Omaha.

We simply do not have the pitching depth. We have a ton of guys who seem to pitch well one outing, then terrible the next. Hughes, Bartnicki, Roedig, all seem to fall into this category. Even Willingham.

If X is good and CT is good, I think we can sneak out of our Regional, but against a solid club with good pitching, I seriously doubt our ability to take 2 of 3 and get to Omaha.

Well, we did it to Lousiville.

I like our chances better in the supers than the regionals. With a healthy X we could have a Louisville type series where X & CT lock me down and we don’t even need a pen or third starter. Is it likely, probably not, but seems more likely than getting through a double elim tournament w/o having to count on the pen. Omaha is another thing.

Ok folks, don’t panic. Everyone had an off day.. even the hitters(except Wilhite). Bartnicki and Roedig are freshman. What was Curry and Thomas like their freshman year (on par with Bartnicki), Roedig actually not doing as bad, yet. Anyway, the point is to everyone can have a day off at the office. If the Jackets were “on” everyday then they wouldn’t even being playing college ball they would be on a rookie team in the MLB. I think considering the past two years, GT has an amazing team this season!
I’m not worried. I believe the ACC championship is very viable for us this year. I

Well said. I have posted this before. No pitcher has it every time out. CT was roughed up Saturday, very fortunate to only give up 3. The D bailed him out and he had some luck, the ball ripped down line that hit the ump for instance. Willingham actually was the opposite, an error and the ball that was lost in the sun led to his 3 runs. Back to my point, that is baseball, where 2 of 3 is pretty damn good. Relax and enjoy

Is there any real news on X?

I’ve heard he is available from the pen but we are resting him as much as we can.

If that’s the case, then it stands to reason he could be ok by tournament time if he doesn’t pitch at all. I say rest him until regionals no matter what. I’d rather be a 10 “seed” with 2 healthy aces than a 7 seed with X being limited.

I honestly don’t think I am panicking. Without Hurter or X, this team is very much like prior editions where we HAD to score 8 runs to have a chance to win because you knew our pitching was weak. It was not simply Sunday’s loss, it was yielding 10 runs to Duke in 2 of 3 games, without Hurter our team ERA is 4.67 which would rank us 11th in the ACC. Going into post-season where pitching ALWAYS trumps hitting, I am simply not optimistic that we have the pitching to get to Omaha.

I agree this season has been a successful one and is surely better than the last few. It has been exciting to think about our post-season possibilities, and I still hold out hope for the Regionals. I think I am just being a realist that good pitching usually wins in the post-season, and with Hurter being down and X a question mark, I just don't see enough pitching to get there (and the entire Duke series showed that).
