UNC expected to win by 21 points

Do not underestimate how awful our offense will be without Pyron or Sims. Without them, we are the worst offense in college football.
There is nothing to lose by taking one of our best athletes (present back, WR, DB, Safety, et al) and set up the offense for basically the run and see how our offensive line handles the situation. I have found that most pure athletes can generally also pass the short pass efficiently.

McCollum is a baseball player and I seem to recall him throwing a nice ball earlier in the year

UNC will cover easily. The ACC wants them to win big to get them to 9-1. And we have no offense. Long will do what he has been doing which is running offense 101 which leads to no where. Our defense will give it an effort but like the last few games they’ll be run down by halftime since Long insists on running 3 plays in 70 seconds and then punting.

To my eyes, McCollum can run the ball, catch the ball and makes good plays; it would not surprise me if he could also pass it.

If there were ever a moment to just tell a kid, “screw it, let ‘er rip,” this is it. I feel like we’ve had a very conservative approach to offense, especially when Sims was out... approach to QB was “don’t lose it for us.”
I have no idea what Gibson can do, but we’ve got nothing to lose. I’d tell him to have fun and uncork it. No pressure or preconceived notions is a big lift... you never know.
If we play it straight, I see a lot of short possessions and a couple of career days punting.

First we have to assume that Long will run Dontae (our best back) more than a few times in the game. Gibson is no threat to run so that hurts. Feel a decision will have to be made to have the QB from Clemson come in to help facilitate the run. I would run the ball until UNC proves than can stop it.

True, but if I'm UNC I don't have a single defensive player more than 7 yards past the line of scrimmage and I'm blitzing all night long. We are a one dimensional offense right now.

We are no dimensional right now. We could possibly set an ACC record of 3 and outs or punts in a game Saturday since both teams run hurry up.

Here is the advanced stats preview from FromtheRumbleSeat.

Even though UNC's defense is bad, our offense is even worse - GT with the advantage in just 3 of 11 categories (and one of those is by 1 percentile point and another by 4). Given our QB situation i'm expecting UNC's defense to sell out to stop the run. UNC's DL is really beat up - was missing 3 starters last week so GT should be able to move the ball some on the ground, though I have my doubts our OL can effectively run block for 60 minutes.
On the other side of the ball you have a great offense matched up against a solid defense. Maybe the most concerning stat there is the havoc rate. GT's defense doesn't produce many havoc plays and UNC's O doesn't allow many. If GT's defense can't get to Maye it is going to be a long day for them. He will pick GT apart through the air.

Statistically this is the best offense GT has faced all year (better than Ole Miss and FSU).

I agree that we need to be able to throw for dough--make UNC pay for putting all their defenders within 7 yards of the line. If I were UNC's DC, I'd start with what UVA did and turn that up a notch or two--more aggressive, and closer to the line of scrimmage. Miami made us pay with blitzes.

It's Thursday. I hope that Long took a good look at last week, gives Gibson AND Phommachanh a lot of reps, and runs more vertical plays. If an OC could actually swap out the playbook during the season, this would be the week to do it (or last week, or the UVA week...).

Also, I don't know what it is, but I don't think the playbook has "slow developing plays" in it as much as we run our plays slowly. I'm not talking about when we snap the ball--I mean the speed with which we go in motion, how fast we get off the line how fast the RB hits the hole, etc.

Stack the box and dare us to beat them passing. Any hesitation creates a sack. Gibson has not shown any scrambling ability so far. Our best bet is to pass on first down rather than run, run, pass, punt. I am going to the game but not optimistic at all.

Stats for our playable QBs. Maybe it's because he didn't HAVE to run at Clemson, but there aren't standout rushing stats for Phommachanch.

I don’t suppose there will be ANY death marches by either team on Saturday. Probably one team will have lots of 3-and-outs and the other will have lightning strike scores.

I'm in favor of pass, run, punt. Catch them off-guard with 3rd down punts and play field position.

The only positive angle I can surmise is that G**** C****** figured them out. Shower UNC with love and affection pregame to make them feel weird then beat them?

Am I missing something? Questions at the QB position, and who's gonna stop Maye and Downs...
It probably does not mean anything but UNC has won 6 games by a TD or less this year. Sometimes against good teams like Miami 27-24, Wake 36-34 and sometimes against not so good teams like App State 63-61, Georgia State 35-28 and UVA 31-28. Under the circumstances, I would probably take UNC and the 21 point spread anyway.

Have you noticed the consistency of our punting unit? Yikes!!!

I was thinking of the 4th string guy. He looks like he can kick a ball far out of shotgun. I recall Syracuse punting on 3rd and miserable maybe 10-20 years ago with their QB.

I hope I’m wrong but the next two games seem to have a 2021 feel to them. November 28 can’t come soon enough.

The link also has a brief interview with Makius Scottt.

One of the comments is the desire to create more turnovers. While that is great, it'd be nice to actually force a team to have a hand full of 3 and outs and force them to punt on 50-75 % of their possessions.

The like is because I agree, not because I "like" it. ;)
