I'm not sure loading up on guys who were struggling to get playing time at their previous school is a viable long term strategy.

How is it significantly different than bringing in guys who don't play much their first two years behind established starters? DO you just assume if someone doesn't show up to college as ready to start as a freshman they will never amount to anything?

Lemme take a swig of Ol' E on these fools ...

Many has't hath tried to seduce mine ears with such plaudits, acclaims, and salutations. But I bid these daws to stand ho. I doth not respondeth to flatt'ry. Truthfully ....

To the lot of you I sayeth, taketh thine online thrashing liketh a sir at which hour Fall cometh. The mic hast been did dropeth. And those on the listeth shall beest purg'd.
Good sire,

Whilst thou hast given thine audience a fetching display of high discourse, thou art highly disillusioned if thine presupposition is that of highest honor. Sir Golden Tornadoes doth have an exquisite, unadulterated vernacular, the likes of which kg01's ears hath never been fancied. Such plaudits, acclaims, and salutations doth cower in the shadows of mine approbations. Steppeth on uppeth, if thou must be returned back to thine rightly abode, but thou wilt give osculation to the king's ring.

It is a ceiling/floor question. Recruited players from high school may be a diamond in the rough or a complete and utter bust. I think an evaluator can have a better idea of a player in the portal but the ceiling will be much lower. Known entity vs. risk of boom or bust.

I am actually in favor of what we did this past recruiting cycle. A small freshman class on players that we could focus on more while building depth through the portal with older players that have a year or two under their belt. Unfortunately, taking such a small freshman class combined with the lack of transfer portal rankings led to a dip in recruiting class rankings which optically doesn't look good.

If we can focus more on relationships with incoming freshman, it may help keep our future talent here as opposed to leaving for greener, wealthier pastures.

I certainly wouldnt say they can't amount to anything, I just don't think building a team around guys who couldnt succeed at their previous schools is a very good long term strategy. If you are a really talented OL or DB, then it isn't some impossible task to find some playing time before your third year in college. Clemson currently has 5 second year players in their two deep at OL. The opportunities are out there if you are good enough. If a player can't find playing time early, and they decide to transfer because they aren't expecting that to change, then its hard not to have tempered expectations about that player coming in. I am usually fine with guys like this for plugging holes and adding depth but we seem to be relying on them to turn this thing around for us which doesn't seem realistic, nor is it really fair to them.

lol you don’t have to look too hard to see plenty of players in the nfl draft that transferred. to say this speaks volumes to your ignorance of the amount of politics and bs that prevents players from climbing depth charts. transfers are the future of college football. literally every team is taking advantage of it now. we have to as well

Joe Burrow is a huge example of this. LSU people thought he was coming in to be another back up or stop-gap player at QB

Name some highly rated high school players that aren't QBs that struggled to get playing time at their first school, then became stars at their new school.

jameson williams, zion johnson, jermaine johnson, kenneth walker, jerome ford, jelani woods all got drafted in the first 3 rounds this year.

historically you have guys like alvin kamara, trey sermon (took ohio state to the championship at rb), i mean this really isn’t hard lol

good players transfer all the time my man. things work out at some schools and sometimes they don’t. your axe to grind here makes zero sense

yeah and sometimes sh!t happens. haskins beat out burrow and set ohio state records. starting just wasn’t in the cards for burrow that season. change of scenery and new coaching staff and he has one of the greatest college qb seasons ever. i’m not saying every transfer is joe burrow, but sometimes a different team brings out the best in a player

Im not sure you understood the question. Pretty much none of those guys struggled to get on the field in their previous stops.

in 2 seasons of play jameson williams had 15 catches at ohio state. practically record setting.

jermaine johnson played less than 30 snaps a game at uga his second year.

kenneth walker had more carries his third year than he did his first two combined because he was in a big committee at wake

jerome ford had 215 of his 319 carries his final year of college

jelani woods had 44/75 catches in his final season after transferring

alvin kamara literally did not play at bama and basically effed around until getting kicked off the team cause he was so far down the depth chart (his words not mine)

trey sermon lost his job to kennedy brooks at oklahoma in 2019 so he transferred.

you have literally just made your argument up to prove a point lol. zion johnson was the only one who played but he was stepping up from an fcs school

In some of our other threads, there’s discussion of players playing with injuries because the backup wasn’t ready to take over.
  1. There’s the possibility that the transferring player is barely behind two other players at their old school, but would be ahead here
  2. There’s the possibility the transfer would be better than our backup and get rotation time, and save injury on the player ahead of them
  3. There’s the possibility they’re playing out of position, or that our scheme is a better fit for them
  4. There’s the potential that they are a solid player who doesn’t fit with their current coaching staff
  5. There’s the possibility that we are playing players out of position because of depth issues, and the transfer would allow us to move a player to their best position
  6. Etc
Some of our transfers haven’t worked because they got injured. That makes the portal look worse to us, especially if that’s because of bad luck. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad move to take those players usually—just that we and they had bad luck

137, imo the fact of the matter is: a coach will play the best guy available. Coaches tend to like their salaries, especially the HC and Co-ords. That's why top programs, like Clem, ND, & uga, have Soph and even Fr OL starters. Getting good players early from HS vs average players two years later is a good bet, in the long term.

in a perfect world that’s true but tech is maybe gonna get a handful of players that are p5 ready from the jump per class. to build a competitive team we need some transfers.

and you’re also ignoring things like a players position coach takes a new job or a new recruit is promised more opportunity in order to get him to commit. ask any player who plays college football and i can assure you there is some politics involved. bo nix played because he was a legacy at auburn for example. jake fromm was the starter because he was there first when anyone with a brain could tell you fields was far and away better

And didn't LSU bring in a QB coach specialist from the pros who really made a difference with Burrows?

Trey Sermon had over 2000 yards rushing and 22 TD before going to Ohio State.
Kamara had his behavior issues at Bama, completely blew up in JUCO and was one of the most coveted JUCO transfers in recent memory.
Kenneth Walker had over 1000 yards rushing and 17 TD before transferring.

Im not sure where the disconnect is here, but when I say guys who struggled to get on the field, im not talking about these guys at all. Im talking about the guys who played zero or a few games in 2 years with barely any stats to speak of. We are taking plenty of these guys.

Joe Brady. Who was then hired by Rhule as OC with Carolina Panthers the next year who then fired him during the season. Supposedly Brady wanted to pass more than Rhule wanted. Not sure where he ended up.

i think he basically got exposed as a fraud. LSU just had a generational position group in Jamar, jefferson and marshall + CEH

He's the QBs coach for the Bills now. Pretty cushy job at the moment.
