Toughest ACC non-conference schedule: GT of course

The SEC has the most players in the NFL, about 20% of the League. The ACC is about 12%.
okay. I have no problem with this. My response is, so? I actually would have figured it would have been a little bit more skewed. Individual players are very important, but football is a team sport. How many games did we win with possibly the best WR ever? 7, 7, 9.

The ACC has 3 teams in the Top 25. That's not a great indicator of expected performance.
Again, more of the SEC narrative. They hardly play anyone outside the conference, so they thump their chests and the media go right along with it.

I know, you're at Auburn. You're surrounded by it. Don't drink the kool-aid. ;)

It's funny. OTOH, nobody wants to play SEC teams because they are so tough and GT needs weaker opponents. On the other hand, it's all media hype. You can find both of these messages in this same thread. I think we are all dysfunctional.

A team can be outside the top 25. A team can also not be considered a cupcake. These two things are not mutually exclusive. I was replying to the narrow question of which ACC teams should be considered cupcakes. I am not certain your reply has anything to do with my answer to that question.

Edit note: I went back and added an emoji because part of this is a little tongue-in-cheek.

I'm all for playing Auburn, Alabama, uga, and Tennessee every year. Or, rotating them so we play these old rivals again. However, that'll never happen, and probably for good reason.

However, although there are only a handful of stellar teams in the SEC each year, they tend to dominate the rankings because of a perception, not a reality. It's a vicious cycle. SEC teams are notorious for playing no one outside the SEC. When they do play other P5 conference teams, they tend to choose weaker teams in those conferences. You will find instances where they do play someone, but most of the time they don't.

For comparison, uga's OOC slate is UT-Martin, Ball State, UAB, and us.

imo, we should be maximizing # of wins over SoS, but there is obviously a financial aspect that has to be considered. Bad teams generally bring fewer fans, Tech fans are less likely to show up for those games, and we have to pay them to play us. How much does an extra guaranteed win cost us, and can we afford it? If we get that extra win and it gets us bowl eligible, we can pick up a 2nd extra win. 7-6 does a lot more for us than 5-7, the question is how much more?
A higher winning percentage sure helps the coaching staff keep their jobs. Can you say "fewer buyouts" and less coach searches.

If I could waive a magic wand, I would have scheduled Auburn every year. From 2012-2022, AU averaged a winning percentage of 0.58 ... about the same as GT's lifetime wpt. The Auburn-GT game was a BIG game ... parades, lots of fan experiences and it made GT relevant to the West Georgia and East Alabama recruits.

I just don't get scheduling Gardner Webb or University of Louisiana - Monroe. There is no excitement connected to those games.

The SEC teams generally play 1 Power 5 OOC game per year. Of the 15 P5 OOC games this year 9 are against ACC teams. FLA plays 2 games against P5 OOC - Utah and FSU. This method works for them as they generally win most of their OOC games and teams like Bama, LSU and UGA rarely lose their 1 P5 OOC game. If you ran the SEC why would you change as they have dominated the BCS and the CFP.

So the ACC could change the narrative by beating most of the SEC teams. Odds of that happening are slim to none. In spite of FSU running it's mouth they could do the ACC's perception a world of good beating both LSU and Florida.

The last time FSU beat a good SEC team it was for the national championship and the media said (unbelievably) that FSU was really an SEC team at heart so it didn’t really count as an ACC team beating an SEC team.

You can’t make this stuff up.

The SEC has one simple narrative, “We are best,” and they stick to it.

In years past when they lost OOC games the argument was that SEC teams spend so much time beating each other up they don’t have their best players ready to play OOC games.

When the ACC has a good year the media is strangely quiet or, in the case of Clemson winning two national championships, the ACC “only has one good team.”

The other thing that happens, and this is way subjective I know, is that ACC coaches seem so intent on winning the conference they don’t seem to put a lot of emphasis on beating other conference teams during the year. They even say as much. Contrast that with SEC coaches who sometimes have said they share coaching notes with other SEC coaches when an important OOC games comes up.

The ACC has a lot to learn but demonstrates little interest.

Outside of Clemson, FSU and UNC, it's hard to make a case for any of the rest of the ACC to be relevant on the national scene. Look at football budgets and fandom …

Well FSU has shown they could care less about the rest of the ACC.

In 2016 we played 3 SEC teams. And beat them all. The ACC had an overall winning record (8-2 if my math is correct) against the SEC that year. Did the narrative change? Nope.

That year, Miss St played 3 cupcakes and lost to one (South Alabama) on their way to a 5-7 record after relatively close wins over powerhouses UMass and Samford. Did they go to a bowl? Of course! Seriously, their losses just mean more (SEC narrative).

I think there are 4 regular rivalry games between the ACC and SEC. SEC league rules, changed only after some seriously negative publicity about their scheduling tactics, now require at least one power 5 opponent for the other teams that don’t play rivalry games. Says a lot that they have to have this as a league rule.

To be fair, the SEC is now likely better top to bottom than the ACC. But their reality distortion field makes it seem much more than it really is. The average fan looks at their W/L record and nods in agreement.

The ACC team's record over the past 15+ years against the SEC is dreadful. There is a reason the SEC is viewed as the better conference. Out of the 15 games between the conferences this year how many do you think the ACC will win. I would put the over/under at 5. It really comes down to how FSU does against FLA and LSU. They win both the narrative is different. GT is likely 0-2 vs the SEC. UK-Louisville is a big unknown but at this point I would think UK is favored. Clemson-USC-E will be tough but Clemson likely favored. UT over UVA by a big number. Wake over Vandy is the most in the bag for the ACC. A$M ve Miami - who knows.
