Thoughts on fan-less games

Fan-less games are better than having no games at all. There likely won’t be a vaccine widely available when the season starts, and putting a ton of people at risk for a slow painful coughing death is a pretty bad look. If the players, coaches, and officials can be tested weekly to contain the spread of the virus, then I see no reason why games in empty stadiums couldn’t work. I’ll probably be watching all the games on TV at the local Georgia Tech bar anyway.

There is no way to social distance in the game of football, if the virus hits one team and spreads, the season will be halted. Parents of players will start the withdrawal

That’s what the testing is for. But you make a good point. If someone tests positive, it would be impossible to determine which players he may have already spread it to. This is just a difficult situation all around, and we (and the NCAA) need to have some understanding of it and adjust our plans and expectations appropriately.

How important are fans in the stands to college football? As the games on TV become a better and better experience, are more people staying home irrespective of COVID-19 and watching their team on TV?

In the past 8 years Div I average attendance has declined in 7 of those years. But, you say, what about the SEC? Their attendance is certainly not declining. The data show their attendance also declining year over year. The attached article was published in December, 2019, so no hint of the virus touched the numbers.

So, might having a much less full stadium be a small impact versus a merely less than full stadium? Just food for thought.

To quote a famous phrase "build it and they will come. " No reason to dictate that there be no fans. Just inform ticket holders there will be no social distancing. Adults will figure it out and either come or not. If you are waiting for a vaccine, good luck living the rest of your life because there isn't going to be one (that is effective) in decades, if ever. That being said, fans or no fans, the games should be played.

Just telling them they are probably going to get sick isn't really a legal or ethical strategy.

Strategy? We have been hosting football games for around 100 years, we don't need a "strategy". There is neither a legal issue nor an ethical one. If you are afraid of getting sick, don't leave the comfort of you home, why is that hard to understand?

Restaurants and barber shops have been around far longer than 100 years, and have far less patrons yet have had to devise their own strategies for keeping their customers as safe as possible. You may not want to believe it but we are all in a global pandemic right now and we just have to deal with it. And yes, if we went with a let er rip strategy with no safety precautions and our stadium is found to be a source of community spread that impacted hundreds to thousands of people, that will put us in a legally dubious position.

The state of Georgia, full of leg jumpers, has been open for over 3 weeks, and our infections are GOING DOWN. The USA just reached 100,000 dead, yet the deaths per day has fallen from a peak of 3,500 per day to, comparatively low, 700. And this is happening as more and more states open up.

I see a trend.

Get folks out of recycled air and out in fresh air and the virus loses its potency.

For a healthy young person the odds of getting Covid19 are very low and if they get it the odds of survival are very high. The data is showing it is no worse for this age group than a normal seasonal flu. We have been playing football since 1893 and I am pretty sure some players have had the flu and missed a game or two during most every one of those years. Some people are approaching this like it is the black plague and certain death for the masses. It's not. I for one think we are at a point where we need to exercise our freedoms and decide for ourselves if we want to participate or not. If you don't think it is safe don't go, if you want to go to the game, then go. Unless there is some dramatic change in what we are currently experiencing, it's time to get back to living as we always have.

And hell, especially in the far west Socialist states like Washington, they have included gun shot fatalities in the death by covid19 column.

It would be the most USA thing ever to start having events with 80k+ people with basically no space between them after going well past 100k deaths and while our COVID numbers are still relatively poor compared to the rest of the world.

And in Florida Pneumonia related deaths are around 5000 for the year when they have averaged below a thousand for the previous 6 years at the same time. Crazy coincidence, right?

Do you really believe there are going to be 80k people packed into stadiums anytime soon in the USA? You know that is not where this is headed. ...and what's with the negative vibe with broad brush "most USA thing ever" troll move?

If our country takes the attitude that we are bored with Coronavirus, time to basically ignore it then yes, schools like Alabama will pack their stadiums. The negative USA vibe here is related to our inherent selfishness. Its pretty obvious that this is becoming too much of an inconvenience to some therefore they are ok with whatever happens if we ignore it. Thats the real reason that our numbers are so bad. It has little to do with the actions of any governor or president. We simply were never capable of handling this seriously, nor are we capable of handling any kind of pandemic seriously.

A reasonable opinion...one I don't fully agree with. None of what you just posted can be objectively derived... which is fine. You have not claimed it as more than your opinion. For me... reading your words... if the USA was as selfish and incompetent as you say... the situation would be much worse than it is now OR will be. My opinion.
