I’m so tired of hearing the “It’s a National Problem” Clemson and Georgia sell out every game and they’re on the schedule, look at LSU, OSU, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma. It has nothing to do with the growing TV market, people wanna see winners. Look at our Crowds in 2009, 2014. When Tech is hot and winning the fans show up period, when you have a losing record and schedule homecoming at 12 they don’t.
And all those schools you listed push out how many alumni per year? And how many does Tech create? Take that times a couple of decades, and it takes a much smaller percentage of alumni to fill the stadium compared to Tech.

For the TV vs in stadium argument, note that TV viewing numbers are down as well as stadium attendance over the last couple of years, so losing stadium audience to TV is not the only thing that is happening.

And while the get it to 2 hrs in not going to happen, i think there is a sense of time with the millennials. As I mentioned before my daughter went to an SEC school and she and her friends (male and female) would generally leave in the 3rd quarter. They would stay long enough to get credit for coming so they wouldn't lose the opportunity to get tickets, but would leave before the end of the game to start going to after game parties. interestingly - if they were leaving most of the time during the 3rd quarter - that is generally going to be around 2 hrs in.

Keep in mind attendance is also highly influenced by whether a team is winning consistently and whether they have a new coach.
Over the last 5 years only 4 universities have teams that have won at least 9 games every year - AL, Clemson, Ohio St and Wisconsin.
6 more have done it 4 of the last 5 yrs - FSU, Mich St, OK, OK ST, Stanford and USC.

I'll also add that I think any school that is thinking of enlarging their stadium is incredibly foolish. Most schools should be thinking about size reductions.

Finally, just because a game is sold out doesn't mean that there aren't empty seats. Most sellouts still have significant numbers of empty seats in the stands.

Stanford always plays in front of a mostly empty stadium.. Has a captive audience (only Cal and SJSU in the Northern California), has been consistently good, etc.

Football attendance and average football attendance are generally negatively correllated.

Is viewing actually down? I have seen tv viewership down, but do those numbers take into account online streams? I don’t watch tv but I will stream three games at once. Also, we are now showing more games than ever. Is average per game viewership down or is total eyeball count down?

I think there are many factors here and I’ve never seen an article that really dives in to them.
