My gut tells me that in this case we aren't looking at a package to mean a different set of plays but rather a smaller set. My guess is Graham/Yates is the starter, leaning towards Yates, and one of the freshmen has a package ready to run either in case the starter isn't getting it done or just to get a chance to show what they got. I also believe that both freshmen will likely get chances to show what they got on the field and don't necessarily believe whoever is the "back up" in game 1 is really seen as ahead of the other one.

I doubt it will be until week 3 or so until we have a good picture of what the QB situation will end up like unless one guy just really steps up and produces big time.

I'll be happy to see Yates They should take the guy who knows the offense the best. IMO in game experience matters but, I want my QB to lead and go out there knowing the plan and having it ready. The height BS shouldn't matter Look at QB's like Russell Wilson or Drew Brees now He's not as talented but the point is that height doesn't mean a damn thing so GO YATES!

Don’t be surprised if Sims starts the game. He might not the “the guy” (my money’s on Yates) but he might be the package guy. Starting the game doesn’t mean “starting”

Starter: Yates/Gleason
Package: Sims/Graham
Why do so many of yall think there will be a “package“ of plays for Sims/Gleason? Have the coaches stated something to that effect? I mean it’s not like these freshman QB’s are some kind of Triple-O Running specialists or wildcat QB’s. They both enrolled early and should have a good grasp of playbook and they definitely both have the ability to make all the throws needed. I personally believe If all goes well and to plan Graham will be moving to DB/WR soon, and Yates will be the odd man out unless he just wants to stick it out for a GT degree he will transfer next season.

Only thing I know for sure, based on my hair-brained reasoning, is Sims is playing. No way they snag a bigtime QB recruit from FSU and not dangle him in their faces like ...

Kelly says per staff there will be one guy with a package. Meaning that they will get someone in with a different skill set to run different plays. That's not the same as a wildcat guy, but usually when you hear that you are thinking of someone who has running tools the primary QB does not.

Personally, I think the package guy is Sims. Practice reports are he's got elite talent but is more prone to make freshman mistakes. Giving him a smaller playbook to become more expert on is a smart idea, and since he has more speed / ability running the ball than Gleason or Yates, having some plays designed to take advantage of that is smart. Not that any of our QBs are statues. Gleason actually had more success running the read option in HS than a lot of dual threat QBs. But you probably aren't going to get him to run the ball wide and turn the corner, etc.

And to your point, I don't think the package indicates 90% QB runs and the occasional jump pass or gadget play. Plenty of passing can be part of it, but it can focus on the plays he can execute the best and also the defensive personnel we are more likely to see with him on the field.

From all reports I've seen Gleason is the one that knows the offense best. He's the only one I've heard CDP mention that can execute the entire playbook. Sounds like a day 1 guy to me right there.

I could make a case for any of the four. Since none of us have seen the practices, all our guesses are just guesses. But my rationale for the four would be:

Graham: With limited practices, he is the guy most comfortable in the offense. It would have been nice to get more of the offense installed for the other guys, but the time and safety constraints just made that impossible.

Yates: This kid has the internal sense of what it takes to win. He is a natural leader and the other guys have tremendous trust that he will make the right plays in tough situations.

Gleason: Tucker is a natural drop back passer and knows the routes and can read coverage like a 3rd or 4th year player in our system. With the running backs on our roster, we don't want our qb running the ball except in unusual situations, or when things break down.

Sims: We recruited this guy because he is a future star. He will make mistakes, but his ability to make plays is too great to keep him on the sideline. The only way he will grow is to play as many snaps as possible. He's going to be playing on Sunday in three years.

Ok, you convinced me.

Starter - Gleason
Package - Sims

Seems obvious right? ;)

I am going to restate this from an earlier post:

If Gleason gets the start, he needs to have been clearly the leader in practice. With two returning players from last year, including the starter, and a 4-star recruit with great reviews from his coach, to start a 3-star kid who is only slightly ahead would be a tricky message to convey internally. The team needs to buy in to this decision. CGC talks about the culture and that includes respecting the players.

I really don't think this will be a problem. If he gets the start, I'm sure it will be because his team recognizes he's the guy that has been leading the team best in practice. It is quite clear from our design that everything is expected to be a competition, and we give time to those who earn it. That is bracketed by an approach in practice where we get reps for everyone, and we give clear feedback and coaching to the developmental guys on what they need to do to make the ATL roster. Everytime I see one of our SAs talk about anything referencing this, they are all bought in and don't expect to be handed anything. They want everyone to succeed even if they recognize it limits their touches.

It’s strange to see such assurances that one particular QB is starting when we haven’t had any footage or real knowledge of who the coaches prefer. What evidence is there in support of a particular player? The only thing we have to go on is the QB play from last year and measurables.

I definitely think Yates is starting with the packages being for Sims. If Yates isn't getting it done I think they bring in Gleason and still use the packages for Sims.

Hearing Patenaude, Yates is in the top 3. When talking about packages (really more akin to having a game plan of how to use 2 guys beyond the starter to adapt to their strengths), he mentioned specifically whether QBs prefer to throw from in the pocket or not. Yates is definitely the guy to execute the passing game when the play breaks down. He needs to create angles and is at a disadvantage with his height trying to see through and throw around the trees. Look for us to move the pocket and have more RPOs if he's in the game.

How do you come to that conclusion? Still think pnode is trying to throw them off with his public statement?
Because I’ve been watching sports for 50 years and put very little stock in coach speak on these types of matters. All I know is that Collins knows he has to find a QB this year. And with 4 young guys who haven’t proven anything on the field he’ll play them until one emerges. Hopefully the starter on Saturday leads us to a 63 point outburst and you can laugh at me. But I suspect we’ll see a season of true competition and let’s hope we find at least 2 QB’s to lead us into the new era.

Coordinators like to be in control. Their first choice is usually the guy they can call all their plays for instead of putting the offense in the hands of someone you hope will make a great improvisational play.
