Stansbury and Collins Dismissed

I have a good friend who got out of Tech with a mechanical engineering degree and now has his own company. I asked him recently if he wanted to go with me to the homecoming game this year. He said he can’t imagine ever going to a Tech game again. The reason? He said he’s tired of sitting in a section where everyone is complaining about something. A sea of negativity is how he put it. He quit going in CPJ’s final year because he felt like Tech fans had become toxic.

I share that to say that if we continue to find ourselves arguing over Collins, even if it is by proxy using the firing process, we will perpetuate a habit pattern among Tech fans that continually holds back the program.

Our current messiness has been going on for four years. We can each find villains and scapegoats to carp on about. I hope we can move away from the constant complaining and begin to get hopeful again.

Recruiting, NIL, transfer portal, fragile athlete egos, changes in coaching philosophy, the shifting landscape of conferences and playoff systems, are all part of the challenge and opportunity that face Tech as we transition to the next steps in the program. I’m looking for things to be hopeful about.

I wouldn't read to much into that. Of course Shultz will but its not really a bad look to yield the questions to the people on the ground to it.

I don't know, maybe call a team meeting and address them and let them know what's happening before they have to go read about it all over twitter in snide posts from boorish fans demeaning everything they've been working for. You know, the professional and courteous way to do something rather than treat the people who will be most impacted, the players, out to dry on on this one...

I need a do over on this. When I posted it I took the question differently and didn't realize they were talking about everyone finding out about it on Twitter as opposed to being personally informed.

So, I’m trying to understand, and I confess that I have not been so deeply absorbed by this story so as to follow every detail, but it sounds like this.

Collins was to be told Monday as would be fairly typical procedure.

Meanwhile Ken breaks the story prior to Monday based on leaks or inside sources.

Then Ken writes another story about the firing being a done deal prior to Monday but nobody telling Collins.

Is that about right? And we are upset that people can’t keep confidential information confidential?

Correct. But also there have been 'reports' that some of the players are upset about the sequence of events: finding out on social media their coach had 'been fired', showing up Monday and Collins is there with no information, Collins gets called in to a meeting and escorted off campus without another word. Made an already difficult time more dramatic, confusing and disruptive. Worry is that it will impact who decides to leave the team. IIUC, with the HC fired players have a window to transfer with immediate eligibility.

I’m not saying I’m against positivity, but there are so many more toxic fan bases in college football that have way more successful programs, I hardly see this as a serious issue lol

I wouldn't pay any attention to it.

Auburn's prez was asked about the AD and made a ham-handed remark that directly led to the AD resigning.

Moral: If you are not prepared to take questions, don't.

It's ok to care about how the players feel. This is a big shift to their collective 'worlds'. Nothing wrong with having empathy. Geez.

He was the UGA beat writer for the AJC for awhile. ANd went there.

if you are holding onto the feelings for months and years and letting it alter your ability to grow and move forward it’s a problem.

it’s pretty understandable the players that have been here for several years would at least be a little sad that a guy that gave them an opportunity to play p5 college football has been fired. having to deal with so many people probably asking them what was going on as they found out real time via social media rumors was probably a lot to handle at 18-22 years old. it’s ok to think something is sad and unfortunate while understanding it’s necessary

I doubt it. The BoT had probably already made its decision at a previous meeting. Collins has had sold his house. So things were already in motion at some level. The entire BoT doesn't have to be involved, just to vote. So it was probably Cabrera talking to just one or two other BoT members empowered to advise the President. You do need the BoT to approve the payout and any restructuring of it.

That's what I meant. Those discussions were going on days or weeks before Sunday via media.

I don’t think I’m better than everyone because I don’t drink. I think I’m better than everyone because I’m a falcons and Georgia Tech fan and I still don’t drink.
