So grant in aid agreements are all one year deals, correct?

So let me preface this by stating that I’m not talking about any specific individual, but just a general SA.

It sucks for the athlete, but I honestly just don’t get the argument. If a regular student gets a scholarship to attend college they have standards they must uphold to retain their scholarship. The simplest example is the Hope. Drop below a B average and it’s stripped away. They don’t kick you out of school...they just don’t pay for it anymore.

Grad program do this sort of thing with TAs as well. If they don’t uphold their end of the bargain the school doesn’t pay for the grad degree.

The way I see it the football programs are doing the same thing. I’m certain you could remain as a walk on if they took away your scholarship, but kids probably don’t want to or can’t afford to do that. Same thing happens on the academic side all the time.

This sounds really harsh, but it’s reality and it extends well beyond college football. You think an employer is just going to keep you around because you show up every day and work hard, but produce sub-par results? It just doesn’t work that way...and the sooner kids realize this the better off they’ll be in the long run.

Grant in aid agreements are generally one year deals. So I don’t have a problem with the school deciding to go another direction.

Now if this becomes normal then I think athletes must be allowed to transfer anywhere they want free of penalty as well. It can’t be a one sided agreement. I’ve typically been on the other side of this point, but if schools are going to go the route above it needs to be fair for both sides.

Btw, there’s never much of an uproar when they take scholarships away from softball, volleyball, track, or swimming athletes because they aren’t producing. I guess it only needs to be fair for football.

Good analysis, but I don’t think a kid can remain a “walk on” just because they may want to. If I understood you correctly.

I promise you it’s not much different. We just don’t have Parks & Rec to hide to hide in
The players and parents spoke very differently than this. I realize your background, but I'm just reporting what I was told.

And from my experience as a student, they were not treated any differently in classes, or with assignments. From what I hear from true factories, is it VERY different there. Was this not your experience?

I don't know, just like no one here knows, what was said by CGC to his players.

What I do know is that 2 more players have to leave to get us to 85. I am fine with frank conversations being held as long as the SA has the opportunity to stay, even if he will never see the field.

We have harped for years that we need to find the student athletes who value the GT education and sell them on it. The dichotomy is that then we turn around and say that premier education we sold them on can be finished anywhere else so we can get better players on the field.

Again, we don't know all the answers. I do know that it's not a good look for GT to be called out for this.

But for years we have been harping on this in the wrong way. Believe it or not, millions (I suppose) of people have actually lived fantastic lives without a GT degree. Is it great - of course.

But there are S/As that are not going to succeed at GT for either academic or athletic reasons.

Just because you receive a football ship does not mean you will, or need to, or are guaranteed to succeed here. Same with any regular student.

And if they have to finish somewhere else does not mean they will not succeed. Students leave GT all the time for many reasons. You know this.

But there is nothing wrong with GT saying we want to be as great on the field as in the classroom.

Those that can’t accept this can go back to their elitist, self defeating mindset.

With Wells getting a scholly now, looks like we have to add another number on the list of kids to "process". ;)

I imagine this means King is going on medical. Can't see any D1 school willing to give this guy a scholarship. He can still get his free Tech education and no longer need to face the pressure of hitting game winning 30 yard FGs.

I think I've said it before, but it's just not realistic to think anyone is going to want to stay and do the 5am routine, the lifting, the running, the absolute grind with no possibility of actually playing. As Coach Choice said recently in a press conference, the degree is a great bonus, but these guys are here to play ball (I am paraphrasing, but that is basically what he said and he is right).

I am fine with that. My stipulation was that I wanted that SA to have the choice to stay in order to keep his scholarship. If a player decides he's through, then that's his choice.

The Choice paraphrase bothers me somewhat. The degree is the prize, and when our coaches seemingly devalue it by calling it a bonus, it bothers me. I agree with his assessment that football is the primary focus of their decision.

Like I said before, my Service Academy education leads me to feel strongly on certain things. I don't doubt it tinges the way I view these issues as well.

All true, but the dichotomy remains. If we use the value of a GT degree as a major recruiting tool, as all of our coaches have, including CGC, then we are being dishonest if we really feel that you can get just as good an education anywhere else when it's time to "nudge" them out of school to free up roster space.

I'm confused. Are you suggesting that we SHOULDN'T be selling a GT world class education in our recruiting?

And yes, I do believe in student athletes. We're not a factory. Yet. Though we seem hell bent on becoming one.

My complete post didn’t post.

Kids understand that they are here to play football and will get along the way. (Here goes that name again) Even CPJ knew he had too many guys on the team that were just too interested putting on the jersey and there mostly for school. That’s good for grad rates but not when you are in the business of winning titles. It is what it is

If the staff is forcing people out why would they give another scholarship to a walkonthat (from the outside looking in) we don't have to give. To me this indicates that no one is being "forced out" and the staff already knows a number of other players that will be transferring or leaving the team. It is different when they are trying to get new players to fit in the system but since Wells is already on the team they had no reason to use an extra scholarship if they were unsure of who would be transferring. If that was the case they likely would have at least waited to give him a scholarship until later in the summer or early fall after the transfers settle out.

It was reported that King is finally healthy. He was hitting from 57 yards during the Spring game. He might decide to leave. He might be the kicker or the kick off guy next year. However it would probably be difficult to get a medical scholarship signed off on for him at this point if he is no longer injured.

Can't imagine us carrying 3 specialist/kickers on scholly. I don't think CGC gives Wesley a scholarship if he hasn't won the job and King hasn't already decided what he'll do. We'll see.

Sound very familiar to what I’ve said and so have others.

1) if you’re an in-state kid on pell could work, but highly unlikely option for most.

2) placed on Medical

3) help you get in another. As alludes too. KSU and Wofford wasn’t just at practice for the juice

#2 opens us up to fraud and ncaa sanctions potentially if there is no actual medical condition.

I know the NCAA hates us, supposedly, but you really think they will single us out to that degree? Our staff has been around the block. They know the can do's and can't do's better than any of us.

So when the old boss leaves and new boss "changes the requurments for management" then those managers im pl acted by the change try to qualify fir lessor positions OR THE OLD BOSS GOES OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP HIS STAFF GET POSITIONS AT HIS NEW COMPANY.

Why u r clueless in this area is a mystery.

"U see on the old team the boss used a group of athletes / coaches that could block and run the ball w almost no passing. He even played run blocking wr over pass catching wr. But that boss suddenly quit. Now we have hired a new boss who will take a "new direction" with a lot of passing.
Its that simple.

Why are you too clueless to realize you are talking apples and oranges? Nay....watermelons and blueberries.

Why does everything have to be about CPJ and CGC, I like both, both are different but both are good people.

This is about CGC because he’s running the program. It has nothing to do with prior coaches unless someone can point to evidence showing a prior coach processed a SA. There is none of that currently.
