Singleton made a business decision. One, I think, most of us would have similarly made at the same inflection point as the money will pay for a GT degree is he wants to come back and get one.
That said, notice how quickly the portal beast fills the vacuum. Lots of WR lining up OVs. We'll be fine, as will young Mr. Singleton. Best of luck to him..... And us....

Some things I just don't pay much attention to...like the rules of the transfer portal. I mostly wait until the music stops and then look to see who is sitting in our chairs.

So, I'm genuinely clueless as to how this works: if a kid "enters the transfer portal", does that mean A) I'm not coming back next year, period, or B) I'm willing to entertain offers from other schools?

B) means they are probably gone but they might stick around if they don't get a better offer.

This is an ignorant comment (no offense intended. Ignorance is just a lack of knowledge).

NFL scouts watch everything, equally. They know all the coaches. ALL the coaches. When they’re working, they watch film on players not games. Whether a kid is P4, SEC, SUN, A10, whatever, they know how to evaluate talent by watching players play, regardless of the competition. They get the film from the schools. Schools have every play for each player isolated, so scouts can get very specific with players.

I know one scout that refuses to watch games live. He learns more about a kid from film and he’s not biased by the hype of the game.

Perhaps scouts have zero biases (I find that far-fetched). That being said, the scouts collect data; the decisions are made by the Coaches, GMs and Owners. I guess they don't have any biases either.

If once everything shakes out there is still a spot and he wants to come back, then maybe I consider it…but only if it means I don’t have to go back on a promise I made to someone else.

Yep. Now a Jamyr Gibbs type talent would be a special case but Eric does not quite fit that mold and is more easily replaced.

Bias might exist. However, in the NFL getting things wrong costs wins and jobs. As much as a former GT player might like GT and dislike the mutts, he would not ignore a mutt nor pick a GT player based on bias. Doing so would end his career in the NFL very quickly.

Yep. The incentives are to get the right player not reinforce a prejudice.

With the increase to 105 scholarships I suspect all teams will have room for very good players to come back. I doubt that many actually come back once they start taking official visits.

Not likely saying anything that hasn't already been said, but this portal transfer rule is good for the players, bad for fans. But I wish him luck and hope he rethinks his decision and comes back.

Yeah, scouts are biased towards coaches (not just head coaches) they know and trust. They call people they know who know certain kids. None of these people care what school a kid went to.

So much this. If they know that Iowa or Pitt develops good D linemen, they'll call the coaches, and they'll look at the film all the time. If the coach says "we have a special one at safety", they'll take an extra look.

When Tenuta was here, we won 8 or sometimes 9 games, but our defensive players got drafted. Scouts knew they were well taught.

There's also a problem with a loaded roster. If you have interior DL getting double teamed, the edge gets more sacks and tackles. If you don't look carefully, you think the prospect is the edge, when it's the DT and NT. This happens in the pros a lot, where a team signs a sack specialist for a ton of money and they do nothing because the other guy brought the magic.

So on point. I’ve seen this many times over the years and I can go all the way back to uga and a DL player named George Patton in the 60s. He had good numbers and good press and was a fan favorite. Tried out for pros and didn’t make it. Turned out that what made him good in college was an underclassman on the DL with him named Bill Stanfill who had a long career with the Miami Dolphins.

For what it is worth, a lot of play college players have the "Professional Athlete" moniker on their Twitter bio.

Also, I don't think Singleton has any animosity towards GT, in fact I would imagine he is proud to have been here and may would stay for less money than going somewhere else. The only issue being how much less?
