Redshirt Changes

A few thoughts...

1) This could make lower tier bowl games more interesting i.e., why not give some young guys reps?

2) Would any teams view this as an opportunity to specialize roles for incoming freshmen e.g., COFH, could you in theory have a freshman sit out all year and get really good at one thing, whether it's a pass rush, punt return, trick play, etc. and save it for the Saturday after Thanksgiving? Potentially very challenging to scout those players, tendencies and line-ups.

3) This rule change makes it easier to avoid play guys who are playing hurt/on the verge of greater injury. A guy like Connor Hansen wouldn't have had his shirt burned last year, but more importantly he might have been inserted in the lineup sooner to relieve starters and our thin OL from having to push through.

This.

I think we can all agree that the biggest problem in beating a team that recruits in the top 5 is that we can't play a few freshmen without burning redshirts.

Should but.
1our guys leave early due in part to great job opportunities.
2 we dont play the back ups due to - missed assignments are critical in our complicated offense.

Will require a change in phylosophy, but could help
Well, you can bet your house, and keep it, that one freshman that will be part of the 4-game set is a quarterback.

I was surprised that the number of permissible games is 4. Surely, it was chosen because it was a value that had enough votes to pass. To be fair, the question wasn't one for which a technically correct answer could be computed and so a what-has-the-votes-to-pass value was to be expected. I had expected that they would settle on a number like 1 or 2.

Who will benefit most? I'm guessing that it'll be the teams that are best able to get their players the largest number meaningful snaps. If the experience consist only of a handful of garbage time snaps on the last possession, then how much was really gained? If the experience consists of a dozen snaps while the game is still competitive or consists of nearly an entire quarter of playing time in a blowout, then the players probably have something that can be used accelerate their development.

I think the last few games of the year will be interesting. Do players that weren't quite ready at the beginning of the year break out during those last 4 games? Do the playoffs count towards the total? I think this can keep the True Freshman engaged.

Will also be interesting to see whether freshman who barely had their red shirts burned last year get minimized playing time this year.

I hope at some point(s) in the season we get to see every single one of the freshmen on the field.
I do too, unless thy just aren’t ready. You don’t want a guy on the field getting beat up and getting down starting to question if they can make it or not. You hear this a lot with pitching in the MLB.

The power teams can let their load of 5 and high 4 star true freshman on field to see if they r almost ready .

A red shirt jr who sees he is going to potentially be benched could then transfer .

Perhaps we could benefit from these transfers on our defense.

This could be HUGE for some teams.
We have mostly 2-3 star guys who need a lot of development ESPESCIALLY in our Offense so that could help us.
The factories might lose a few more early to pros but could play their FR stars early so gives them depth in games --that we don't have. .
Crazy ,just crazy.

I just re-read the original post on this thread concerning the new rules. I either ignored or missed the following --- "The new exception allows football players to preserve a season of competition if, for example, injuries or other factors result in them competing in a small number of games." I think many of us have not taken that delimiter into account and have been saying that players could play in 4 games and still be redshirted. But it would seem that injuries are still the key factor, plus "other factors," whatever that might mean. It seems that nothing much has changed other than the number of games an INJURED player could have played in and still be redshirted.

Other factors means that the coach only wants them to play in 4 games.

I may not have understood this correctly, but once you get to game 9-10 what's stopping every team from playing everyone since those games don't count? Do they need a medical waiver for it to not count or is it just a blanket mulligan?

I doubt the NCAA would ever go that far.

Well, they should have said so. I don't see how they can just come along and say, "No, no, that's not what we meant". Seems to me that if it's not clearly stated otherwise, four games is four games, period. These rules are gone over by lawyers. An astute attorney would have asked them if they meant any four games for any reason. If the answer was, "no", he/she would have them specify the "other factors", I would think.

Trying to beat the other team is what's stopping them.
