Actually, Georgia Tech has more open practices (over half of their practices are open for at least a portion of the practice) than most other schools. LSU just closed all of its practices, Kirby Smart closed all practices last year and will continue that this year, Stanford closes all but one practice, Coach MacIntyre at at Colorado closed his practices in 2015 after getting burned, and nearly all SEC and ACC teams have closed practices. In fact, open practices are a rarity nowadays. One of the biggest coaching concerns is about injury reports - coaches hate it when the media reports on an injury before the program gets a chance to, which causes concern when sometimes the injury is not that bad and when the parents find out from the media before they hear from the school (which is a definite cause for alarm). The media in a way brought closed practices on themselves, but saying that Georgia Tech has less open practices than other schools or other schools don't close as many practices is wrong. Now, if you're talking about opening practices to fans, that's even more rare, and only happens in very, very special circumstances. Arizona State will have one practice open to fans, and Nebraska had a spring practice open to fans (which drew a decent-sized crowd), but no program allows unverified outsiders to come in and watch their practices and gameplanning without knowing who they are or what they might do with that information
