How long does it take to build a good football program with a team that has only won 14 in the last 4 years?

I guess you could look at Coach Dodd and say it took him only one year But is that fair he took over a team that was 8-3 ,8-3 and 9-2 not the same as 14 wins in 4 years.

So, let's look at Bill Curry you could say 4 years. But the team won 21 games the 4 seasons before. But 2 of those years they did have a winning season 7-4 and 6-5 but better than 14 games in 4 seasons.

Ok now let's look a Coach Ross and it took him 2 years. and that team was 5-5-1 and 9-2-1 before he took over.

Now last let's look at Coach O'Leary it took him 2 years. This one may be more like what Coach Key was doing O'Leary took over after that other bad coach.

But what people seem to be for getting is today, is not like those past years. Because now you have the transfer portal and the NIL. I could live with the transfer portal but the NIL is no friend of Tech. We don't have the money to buy big time players like others. Our fan support point blank does suck. And what great players wants to play in front of a stadium that has 60 of 70% full?

I think most on here will say our offense is lots better than the last 4 years. Yes, the defense is in question, but fact is we don't have the money to hire the best top defensive coordinator to come to Tech something Coach Johnson had a problem with. I have no idea what Coach Key will do with the defense, but I think he has a plan.

I know everyone wants to win big, but we have improved from the last 4 years. I think we will turn this around will it be this next or next and 3 years I have no idea but you can't run people off every time we loss a game.

We do have a couple of people ( not to name them you know who they are) would be happy with a 12-win season. They would still complain.

The past four or so years have added entirely new dimensions to GTs dilemma that negates comparisons to any previous regimes and eras. We all see the improvements made to the offense except for OL so hopefully we can get more of those type players for the D side of the ball, more better OLpersons, and even kicking specialists.

Just my opinion… I think it’s dependent on how long someone has been a fan. My expectations were formed from the Gailey years. Win games we should, win a few we shouldn’t, and occasionally lose something we should win. But go bowling… Paul Johnson more or less followed that model with more success.

I was too young to know of Tech when they sucked in the early to mid 90s so the new generation of sucking is new to me. Now we have an entire generation of Tech fans and students that know nothing of winning and would be elated to go 6-6 and make the Lysol toilet bowl game.

To think I was tired of 7 win seasons when Gailey was here LOL! I personally hate the transfer rule worse than NIL- At any time a player can leave which makes it easy for all of the NIL tampering that is going on. These things really make it difficult for a program like Tech whose fan base has dwindled. My hope is somehow the coaching gets Tech to a point where they can attract more depth/talent-winning will improve attendance as people do not go watch Atlanta sports if they are not winning.

Honestly still think we're a year or two away from building a good program again.
For me, watching CPJ come in after gailey and beat the crap out of some good teams was refreshing, but rare due to his offensive style.
We have the right coach and athletic director, just need to flush out the sh*t that Collins left us with.

Tech unfortunately got caught in a bad spot between the end of CPJs time and Collins, during a massive evolution of football.

Check back after the Wake and Bowling Green games. Tech will IMO probably have a winning record then and if so, we'll be relatively happy campers.

Problem is, we don't have time to rebuild a team in 3-4 years. We all knew coming into the season that Tech needed to win NOW.

As you said, fan support sucks. We are broke and no real NIL money to keep our best players around. Couple that with a shaky defense and special teams woes that still linger, playing some of the best teams in the country annually, and an inexperienced HC...we've got a recipe for disaster.

Sure the season isn't over yet, but that argument will lose it's water eventually. I try not to get so upset about this game I choose to care about, but it's maddening hearing fans chirp about moral victories when we keep losing in similar fashion as we have for the last 5 years or more.

I'm usually pretty positive (or try to be) but I'm sick of losing to big boy teams. Wins over SC State and bowling Green mean nothing to me. And nothing to the program ultimately.

I'll sit and watch every weekend but it ain't looking good for our boys. We could still turn it around but I'm not holding my breath.

I guess we could play OOC games like the SEC, UT Martin, Ball State, UBA UMass, Samford, UTSA, and Austin Peay, those games mean more than ours.
You said we don't have 3 or 4 years to build a program. And with no money no fan support how would you think we could? I guess we could cheat like some but we would get caught because we are in the SEC.

Your passive aggressive comments do nothing for me today sir. Especially when I haven't had my coffee yet. Obviously scheduling more doodoo teams is not the answer. That is not the issue.

The issue is losing. Something this fan base has seen far too much of In the last 5 years. Issue is defense still soft year after year. Issue is special teams are still special. Among many other things.

You're right about questioning how we could build a program with no money and fan support. I can't argue with you there. However, I am not a coach, a president, of an AD. I am just lowly fan who's brother went to Tech and decided to throw my Tech hat on forever.

But being a fan as of late sucks. Does that make me a bad fan for saying that? No. I'm just critical, as fans should be.

Bottom line, I'm tired of losing. We all are. And it's frustrating to see over and over the same issues. We can agree on that I'm sure.

Today its all about the $$ and that needs to changed (but that's a whole other story). Until that changes we will be a bit behind the eight ball, but it can be done look at programs like Tulane, Duke, WF, Rutgers that have been historically bad. I believe the right Head Coach and his staff can change it much quicker than in years past. But you need to go to bowl games to improve recruiting and we need recruiting to build a program. The top players of today look to be in the best possible situation to be noticed by the NFL and sitting at home during bowl season does not help our cause. And it makes sense, look at Jahmyr Gibbs for one, he had good things to say about GT after leaving and might have stayed, but he probably improved his draft status ten-fold by playing at a higher profile program.

You are not a bad fan I think you are a good fan.
And I do understand the want to win fast but let’s be honest after the last 4 years we know it would take time. I want to win so bad I get upset also< I had to stop posting on the Chat cause I know I would say something I should not. I'm 71 so I dont have many more years to enjoy Tech Football.
Key made the offense better picking the right staff on offense. He will do it on defense, when? That is something we will have to see. I'm not at the practices so I have no idea if the defensive coaching staff is teaching the same thing or maybe he needs to spend more time at the defensive side at practice.

I agree with everything but the last part. If you’re good enough, the scouts will find you. Gibbs still would’ve been a first round pick.

Good question. Historically it takes Tech longer than any of the factories. That said, some former elite factories have fallen on hard times that have gone on far longer than most would have suspected. Nebraska is a good example. As for the examples you provided.

Coach Dodd was blessed with recruiting advantages during his time that none of his successors have enjoyed and he was, as Bear Bryant noted ruefully, the absolute best game day coach of his time

Bill Curry had the most difficult rebuilding job of any coach in Tech history taking into account the worst division one facilities in the country, an administration that seriously considered deemphasizing football, a disgruntled fan base and surly alumni along with absolutely no depth and few difference makers.

Coach Ross was a coaching genius who was thrust into a situation he did not fully understand until he got here. He later said that had he known what he was getting into he would not have taken the job. That said, he has a national championship to his credit which puts him in good company: Heisman, Alexander, and Dodd.

Coach O'Leary had an outstanding staff of assistants starting with Ralph. He had improved facilities and was able to get players to fit his system starting with Joe Hamilton, Dez White, Ed Wilder, Kelly Campbell and a slew of very capable offensive linemen including Coach Key. He brought excitement to the Flats and good crowds.

I think we have a good coach but he knew what he was getting into and wanted it anyway. That cannot be lightly dismissed in this environment at Georgia Tech. This rebuild will take years. IIWII

Don't hold your breath on beating Wake. They came from 17 down in 2nd half to win Sat.We are playing AWAY again and guess how we have played in the 2nd half all yr. I'd love to see a win but unlikely..

I think the Jackets will run up a lot of points on Wake. Their defense seems pedestrian. They've beaten Elon, Vanderbilt (who lost to UNLV) and squeaked by James Madison.
It's a must or bust kind of game. Get by the Deacs and take care of business against Bowling Green and we could have a winning record going into the Miami game.

Yes, they came back down 17 .... against Old Dominion. Wake is not that good. We can and should beat them if we are the team we think we can be.

I didn't expect to beat Ole Miss. I thought we had a good chance against Louisville but we couldn't make stops in the second half. If we lose to WF, I have concerns about the fragility of this team for the rest of the season. We easily could end up with 3 or 4 wins. Last year a mid season coaching change gave the team a spark and a new attitude.
Recruiting for next year is pretty much over. We need help and lots of it on defense. Is it lack of ability or coaching? Can we hit the portal for DL help? I do know we have a record of our DC's performance for 5 years and that isn't pretty. We have ranked near the bottom on defense within all of D1 metrics every year with him. What will make him get better? Is he a protege of our previous HC who was his mentor? Key doesn't have time nor IMO the patience to allow this to continue unless there is an unexpected turnaround.
I feel better now.

We complain about money, but are we doing our part? How many on here have seen "I'll give money when x happens." "I'm giving up my season tix because x."

All of us SHOULD be both GTAA donors and Tech Way subscribers. I understand money issues, I have them myself, but we as fans have to put our money where our mouth is.

Those guys on the field who didn't give up last night should inspire the fans who always give up. Our fans need to reflect our team. Most of yall had us at 3-2 at the end of the month and guess what, that's what we'll be. We have several winnable games remaining.

We have a top 25ish recruiting class ready for next year. Key is more real than TFG, and I feel that will help team chemistry. On air last night, one of the commentators asked Key what was one of the biggest changes he instituted last year, and HCBK said, let them wear earrings. Let them express themselves. Being a disciplined players coach will attract more talent than run off.

Look, im tired of losing just like most anyone here, BUT you have to give it time. We have one of the lowest payrolls in ALL OF FBS. ADJB is doing his part. HCBK is laying the foundation from lessons learned from O'Leary and Saban.
What are you doing to help this team? Leaving negative comments and wishing for another coach who wasn't and will never come here, on a public forum for future recruits and their families to read. Bravo.

Go Tech & THWg!

How is the air up there on your soapbox? Boy, are you generous with other people's money.

No, all of us should not be both donors to the GTAA and the Tech Way. People should give what they feel comfortable giving to either the program or to the NIL company. Those are personal decisions and people should not be shamed to giving if they choose to spend their hard earned money elsewhere.
