Not sure what you mean or imply by this. Did our previous OL coach "blackball" players? If you think Key will base his gameday roster decisions on cumulative staff analysis scores and not his own judgement, you're crazy.

It looked like to me he blackballed Will for some reason. Will's playing time just disappeared.

As far as gameday roster decisions, coach says if you're above the line, you are going to play. And if possible play multiple positions. And coach said at Lunch Bunch, the whole staff ranks the players. Go watch it for yourself.

So if the whole staff minus Key thinks a guy is "above the line" he gets to play? What are we paying him for?

If the same guy gets in for one snap does that satisfy the ATL agreement with the players?

“ATL” IMO is just something for the players to make them all feel like they have a chance so everyone is locked in all the time. I seriously doubt the staff won’t have a Depth Chart and that they will base the lineup on who’s “ATL” the best players are going to play.

I think the ATL stuff is legit. But it's gonna be a small handful of coaches that determine ATL, not 40. Why in the world would you want 40 guys with equal say input on roster spots? How do you even get to 40 anyway?

You can rank players without a depth chart. If your offense could include a TE, a FB, a RB and WRs (slot/not) then it makes more sense to rank players overall than purely depth by position. It gives you a better idea of who should be on the field.

If you are running a CPJ system, then you need a depth chart. Same for OL, but those guys are going to rotate and possibly have to cross train.

He said they all sat around in a room for about two hours ranking the roster. Maybe he gets 41 votes and everybody else only gets 1 vote.

I see where you are coming from, but I'm willing to bet the farm that we'll find out that the team has a depth chart, no matter what we call it, when we take to the field against Clemson. By that I mean that we'll soon see that it is ranks within positions that matter most. I'm saying this because I can't imagine any coach going into a game and not thinking he has a clear idea of what the 2 deep is at any position. The in-game management situation would become very difficult otherwise.

The one area I think this kind of system could work is the OL. Cross-training for those positions makes a lot of sense. But maybe Coach's idea will work. Tech is paying him for stuff like this.

CGC was asked if he had a good idea who his next qb was and his answer was: "Yep". Now if that ain't a CPJ answer, I don't know what is. Of course he went on to elaborate a little about how all 3 qb's ranked in the top 2o something players, but CPJ usually added to his one liners, too.

Yeah, I am sure they'll have that too, but it's more like a sort/rank within the overall rank.

I think it makes more sense to first rank the best 11/22/72 and focus on that when in the offseason for recruiting, coordinating and gameplanning, then sort that by position afterwards if you need a body. In that sense you do not need a depth chart per se.

And even in game, you may have indexed the strength of your roster by formation and that would change if you were to lose, e.g. Davis. So you might want to go 4 wides with Sanders instead of Cooksey. It all seems very EA sports.

On the other stuff mentioned, Sabermetrics were always an additional tool on top of scouting. Both correct the other.

I understand what you are saying about the new OC's leanings and agree. But Tobias is such a good and tough runner that if he can read defenses and hit the short passes that may be good enough to get him the starting QB spot. He definitely has a chance. Coaches have been clear that Johnson has been more accurate and reads defenses very well but have also said that Tobias has surprised them with his passing ability. I think from film they thought he couldn't throw the ball but in practice he has shown he can toss it. I think Johnson and Oliver are neck and neck for starting role and Graham is behind both by a good bit.

Probably more like
LJ - Graham - Oliver

When u read something that doesnt make sense u are usually correct.

. Of course the position coach will have the say in who and how much pt, but cgc is committed to playing the backups

Please listen to the audio of the north atlanta alumni - after the practices the staff takes 1.5 hrs to make comments on each player. It covers all kinds of stuff like hustle, blah, etc . This plays ""a part""" in the ATL.

Per the talk cgc Antwan owens is so much better that he is going to play till he is very tired ( note the high tech energy measurement stuff). We have 7 very good safety nickel guys so they are DESIGNING schemes (24) with some guys completly learning the ones they are best suited for.

Yes if parker bran was here he would play nearly all of the snaps because he was that much better.

This system will let young guys on the field and WE MAY SEE MAJOR JUMPS IN ATL.

I watched the entire lunch bunch video and my take is he wants our best players on the field regardless of position. It’s his and his assistant’s job to figure out how to put the pieces together and field an O, a D and ST’s.

I understood it the same way . But I can see it being confusing at times coaches really have to be aware of who was on the field at all times. Offensive coaches need to see who is playing defense before they send them back on the field

By definition you are 100% right on the first play.

There will no longer best 11 play the whole game and for every formation.

As game goes on "who is the best" will change due to what the coaches see the opponents doing and the fatigue of the players on the field.

I heard - expect lots of different looks and with each look you could have a different set players who are "the best".

And as you said , they will have whomever they think are the best players on the field.
