Confused at how 49ers view Mason. Every once in a while he gets meaningful carries as RB but 90% of the time he is just a special teamer

THey have macaffery. He's an every down kind of back since he's both able to run with power and with speed. Mason is his back up when they need him for power carries they have another guy to eb the third down back and they have samuel who flexes into that slot. In the playoffs you don't rotate as much

It appears he is the #3 back, Mitchell was hurt some this season and Mason was then the #2 back. As long as he is on his rookie contract with the Niners he will be on the team. Once it becomes time for a 2nd contract he becomes at risk as do most rookies who are not major contributors. The NFL Salary Cap pretty much dictates all teams fill out special teams and backups with very inexpensive players contracts.

Yes, it was the continuation of the Lions coming apart and not the beginning. The Lions failed to continue to run enough and the pass throwing and catching was off , especially early in the second half leading to the coming apart.

But if you still have the lead you should recover from those kinds of flukey mistakes. Personally I thought Detroit was still in a position to win until that fumble. My wife, who is from Detroit, went to bed to read after that.

That is a logical conclusion. On the other hand it is not how the Lions generally operated this year. While I would have gone for the FG, it's no guarantee as the NFL average from that distance is around 65% and the Lions kicker was only with the team the last 5 or so games and had not kicked any FGs of 50 yards.

My bigger issue was on 3rd down with a minute left on the SF 2 yard line going with a running play. If unsuccessful, as it was, then it forces a TO which means even if you score a TD on 4th down, LIons did, you then have to try an onsides kick. In the NFL only 2 of 42 onsides kicks were successful this year. The risk way outweighs the reward trying a running play in that situation.

Two 3rd-down passes were dropped, both of them resulting in punts. The Lions dropped this game quite literally.
