I don't think it's possible. (And I feel your knee jerks kicking me already) But I wouldn't be opposed to a partial merger or 'strategic partnership' between GT and GStU. Wherein the Institute remains as a separate academic entity, but they share the non academic 'overhead' resources like- non-faculty admin staff, facilities, housing, and athletics- So, there's Georgia Tech and State University, where the 'I' and the 'U' are independent academic units...

Fold the GSU athletics into GT (GT has the better conference, brand, etc) All of a sudden the GTSU Yellow Jackets are an ACC program supported by 60,000+ undergrads and a lot of alumni. GSU isn't a great school, but it's a good school, R1 level research university and all that. Long term, I think such a school would end up like Michigan or Cal, a top 5 STEM school inside a major university.

Maybe even do a three-way trade that gets KSU the Perimeter College assets and GSU's Sunbelt spot. The BOR has been all about mergers and restructuring to cut costs and reduce redundancy. But, I know, they'd never go for this, because dwags.

As the 3 groups I'm not sure which one I'm in so help out. I don't but would like to see a spread option with a little more passing short and medium passes.

And the Christmas cash is in the mail hope I got the address right . KG street 1 somewhere in the US.

I'd be fine with Collins. But does anyone feel like his tactics/style is a little disingenuous, panderly, and overall corny? Like, the swag chalice seems pretty gimmicky and kind of lame to me - maybe I'm just the only one, but it just feels a little off and kind of like he's trying too hard.

Kind of like an updated version of Pepper. Don’t think some of that will sell at GT or with players we are going to have to recruit. Almost like “look at me.”

This could make for an interesting poll.....


I think we have 3 (maybe more) vocal groups, and I respect all of them, as they are GT fans, and EVERY fan is needed.

Group 1 - those that believe keeping our base offense is a tactical advantage, and we would like to keep that going, but we do understand the recruiting has to have an uptick

Group 2 - those that believe any innovative O system will be ok, as long as we improve recruiting (JUST HIRE THE RIGHT GUY)

Group 3 - those that hate the 3O and want an "easier to recruit to" O system (with more passing of course)

All 3 of these groups love GT, and all 3 would agree that if we don't get better defensively, none of our offensive system preferences will matter very much.

Personally, I can identify with groups 1 and 2, but it is hard to understand fully group 3, but I do respect their opinion and preference. I also remember "hating" the 3O when Bammer and Okla, for example, were running rough shod over everyone with it, but since I got to see it from the other side (my team), I became a great admirer of the offense.

Collins is gonna recruit his butt off for GT. When we get that top 20 recruiting class it's gonna be a good feeling

In the past two seasons 2016/2017 no school has had a Top 20 recruiting class with a football budget under $23 million. Tech is at $17.38 million. Of the 13 schools that had top 20 classes both of the past two season, only Stanford had a budget under $29 million, and the average budget was $36 million... more than double Tech's football spending.

Only Stanford and Maryland have had a top 20 (19th and 17th) in the past two seasons with average home attendance below 55,000. Tech was 43,087 this season. (And Maryland's 2017 class was an outlier, their previous 5-year average rank was 45th).

That's not to be pessimistic or fatalistic. I believe Tech can, eventually, get into the top 20-25 in recruiting. But I don't think it's realistic to expect a different coach can do that with the current paradigm. To improve recruiting dramatically, the new coach is going to need resources we haven't been providing.

Let me get this straight. The BOR, which is heavily dominated by UGA grads, dictates that we must keep a calculus course in all our majors, even though it is an irrevalent requirement in some majors? If this is true, how do they defend their position?

They have less say on that than we do.

It is the HillNerds & peterson that have to first approach the BoR on these matters and they don’t.

These requests initiate at the school, not at the BoR.

It would be interesting to expand that out to Top 25 and see how much the money numbers drop. I think if we recruit 25-30, it would help our competitiveness significantly. Two points I'd make: I don't think we've been 'trying', in other words, we've been looking for sort of unique fits offensively so I don't know how our rankings correlate to our $$$ right now. Also, I think again we've got some built in advantages. Everyone outside of Tech seems to see them except 'we can't' Tech people. We're smack dab in the middle of what I'd call the Capitol of College Football, and that can compensate for some of the budget gap if we took proper advantage. Some of these far flung hamlets called college towns have to sink more money in to overcome their location disadvantages, I'd argue (and realize some of that money can be 'off budget' wink wink nod nod). And I know how some of you feel about the romance of the 'college town'.

I just can't see Monken getting the job. In my opinion, one of two things happened. Either CPJ was nudged into retirement or he really just got sick of this job for a variety of reasons. Neither of those two situations points towards the hiring of another TO coach being a good route to go. They both point towards a desire for change.

This is an email exchange between me and a Philly friend who follows Temple sports:

me: "I saw a piece on the web that said Ga Tech is interviewing Geoff Collins, the Temple football coach, to replace Paul Johnson. Collins was at Tech in his early career. If you look at his resume you will see he has never stayed anywhere longer than two years, and when he leaves it is usually in December, just before his old team is about to play in a bowl game. Is Ga Tech a good enough job that he might break his pattern and stay put for a while?"

Philly friend: "I think you are being a tad harsh on Collins. Yes, he has moved around a lot. However, in all of his moves, he has taken a step up the coaching ladder in terms of responsibility and/or in terms of the nature of the program he was getting involved with. He left Ga Tech once to go to Alabama; most up and coming assistant coaches with higher career aspirations would do something like that. The other time he left Georgia Tech, he left a Graduate Assistant job to return to his alma mater as Defensive Coordinator. That looks like a no-brainer to me. Having said that, I wonder if he is ready for a job at the Ga Tech level as the “head honcho”. He has been successful at Temple over the past two seasons, but the fact of the matter is that Temple football is not big-time football and Ga Tech football is big-time football. I don’t know that 2 years in charge at a backwater school is enough to qualify him for the Tech job."

Or CPJ saw that we now an AD that gets it and has been able to convince others that the program has been void of resources $ for a long time. CPJ maybe saw that we are now heading in the right direction off the field and know it will take many years or longer then he wants to coach. He decided to pass off to a disciple so that the new coach can put his finger print on off the field improvement ie recruit and support staff.

My hope is that the new coach will make as a condition of his hire a big increase in the recruiting budget.
