Does anyone really think that HOPE and Zell are anything but a net positive for GT students? Or that GT is suddenly accepting a ton of students whose GPAs were inflated by their HS in order that they qualify for HOPE? The availability of funds to students who have extremely high HS achievement has driven up the overall quality of students entering GT. The cream of the crop at GT has always been the cream of the crop. What's changed is that everyone else at GT is closer to that highest tier student than ever before. Not only that but the graduation rates are higher than ever.Has there been grade inflation in Georgia high schools so kids can get the Hope? SAT is more representative of academic preparation.
Look, I'm sure there are cases where grade inflation does happen. I'm not saying it doesn't nor that it's not a big problem elsewhere. I AM saying it isn't a problem for GT. The kids that don't belong get weeded out pretty quickly. But nowadays the number of kids that don't belong is fewer than ever because so many kids apply that GT can only take the VERY highest achievers.
