We spent a lot of time talking about all the lost players this year. I said I’d do an attrition study and have started.
Basically,
· Used end of year roster posted on GT site - except for current year where I used last weeks.
· Use Scout recruit data to determine who gets four year scholarship
· Compared changes in end of one season roster plus Scout scholarships to the next year's roster to determine which scholarship players “completed” their football careers at GT. 5 year players obviously completed as well as 4 year players who never red shirted. For 4 year players who red shirted but never started/played much, I assumed they completed since they got a 4 year scholarship.
· For the roster, I had to take out all the players who didn’t get a scholarship according to Scout or I knew transferred in.
Here are the overall results:
2007 to 2008, lost 9 players early when CPJ came in.
2008 to 2009, lost 7 players and 10 completed
2009 to 2010, lost 12 players and 6 completed. (Remember the talk about clubhouse dissension?)
2010 to 2011, lost 5 players and 12 completed
2011 to 2012, lost 4 players and 14 completed
2012 to 2013, lost 4 players and 10 completed
2013 to present, lost 13 players and 12 completed last year.
So by my rough data, this is the worst year under CPJ. That includes when he took over and the 2009-10 clubhouse problems. We had been averaging non-completion losses of 4-5 players year and that has tripled this last year.
My rough data for the time under CPJ has 23 staying 5 years and 41 staying 4 years. 54 left the program for other reasons. The vast majority of the players don't stay 5 years.
What’s the cause? I’d rather not go there till I improve the quality of data more. For that I need some help. I’ll post the ones I need help on in a minute.
