See boomers post on Andrew st ... and bb.

Basically the center and right guard double team blocked nt all game .
Moved him back w gave room for bb .
75 went head hunting.
Not sure what the tackles did besides get on some one and push. Sure fooled v t.

In addition to taking the all conference DT , #8, out with the double team and often running (left) away from him, we had the WRs block inside on the LB (and if he blitzed they picked up the S) and the ABs blocked out on the CBs. When the D right tackle started laying back and charging wider to pursue the sweep we hit them inside with the BB. Great strategy by the Coach.

Does anyone know what we did in our blocking scheme change? The halftime field reporter said when she spoke with CPJ at half time he had a twinkle in his eye when he said they changed their blocking scheme to something VT has never seen before. Thought that was very interesting. Did we drive block more? Make things more simple to a more conventional blocking scheme? Whatever it was, it worked.
I think Kenny changed it.

We zone blocked the QB sweep. Normally we man block for option plays, but as others have already pointed out, we didn't run that much option.

Was sweep a "Zone Option" with a stipulated Keep? Andy asked CPJ about zone option plays.

That pretty much sums it up. What I do not understand is why Coach Foster had that defensive tackle off the ball a yard or so and why the safeties were not up running into the gap like they have done effectively so many times in the past.

Don't think so. It looked like an option to keep them honest (with the tail motion and A-Back looking like he was ready for a pitch), but CPJ referred to running some zone plays for TO.

I'm getting used to using 3O for triple option and TO for Tobias Oliver. I think I'll adopt that standard. :D

In the unc presser which I just now saw, CPJ said, "It wasn't a sweep but a different option" or something like that. So, I guess it was the Zone Option which would be a zone play.

Oh, I'll take a listen, thanks for pointing that out. The reality is Bud called it a QB sweep, who knows what CPJ calls it. He may have very well called a double option with a Keep tag: "Double Flex, Turkey Neck Special Left, Keep".

I think Tobias called it a sweep too.

But if we're blocking it the same, we could run it as a true option.

I saw a comment somewhere that that DT would have been the backside DT on the triple option (remember, the QB checks left/right based on how the defense aligns pre-snap). He was a yard off the line to better defeat the block by the backside OL. It was part of a defense against the triple option.

Due to GT running a different set of plays, that alignment effectively put that DT out of position.

As for the safeties, Bud may have been thinking about the prior game where GT threw 2 passes for 140 yd and 2 TD.

Didnt see that. Thanks for posting. Makes me wonder what are the possible pitch options off of this zone blocked sweep.

Anyone have thoughts of how this could be ? ?? The sweeps we ran iirc were not wide sweeps that angled for the side line. They got wide and qb headed up field. Could we make it a wide sweep that angles toward the sideline and have an option to bb on a partially blocked CB?

This point coach made and which 87 caught is intriguing. I just am curious of what this sweep option would look like.

I think there might be some terminology differences. For example, on the radio show Andy asked a question about cross charging and CPJ said he didn’t know what that was. Clearly, he’d know exactly what it was if you showed him film of it, but he’s got his own terminology for a lot of stuff. Either that or he’s just deliberately being confusing and obfuscating the issue. He’s really doesn’t like to talk details about his scheme in a public forum.

My mother wanted me to go there. Thank goodness I went to gt. The liberal arts would have flunked me out
She might have been right. Oth, the courtroom scene in Animal House has a Tennessee flag at the front of the room for a reason. Party weekend at Sewanee was one of the inspirations for the film. I barely survived that myself.

Haha - it was @Longestday who asked! At least, I'm guessing it was based on what Andy said.

CPJ definitely has his own terminology and refers to it as an Easy Stunt (or 1-2 exchange). Usually the DE is the dive key, and given the designation #1. #2 is the LB to his outside or stacked behind and is the pitch key. So #1 has the dive, #2 has the pitch. As it's name suggests, a 1-2 exchange is where #1 steps outside to take the pitch and #2 takes the dive. If your DE is super-athletic and quick it's a very difficult read to make and your QB needs to be lightning quick with his read. Maybe I'll do another re-hash on all this terminology before the spring game.

I've never heard it referred to as an Easy Stunt, and @stylee and @Longestday and most everyone else refers to it as a cross charge. But, who am I to go and tell CPJ to call it something else: "Hey Paul! You know that offense you've been running for 40 years that I've never coached? You need to start calling an Easy Stunt a Cross Charge, OK?"

You are probably right but I would have done it anyway. Penetration by linebackers and/or safeties into the gaps is a proven triple option defense BUT it does leave you open, WIDE OPEN down the middle of the field for deep posts, skinny posts, deep seam routes, and such. Nonetheless, I would be damned if I would just sit there and watch Tobias run that quarterback sweep over and over with my middle linebacker getting plowed on every play. Of course, the way they were tackling it probably would not have mattered too much but I would have tried something, anything, to what was clearly not working. I am surprised that Bud did not do better than that. Got embarrassed on national television. Imagine, Virginia Tech playing defense like that...what is the world coming to?

It does not matter what they called it because 90% of the time, it seemed as though the white shirts outnumbered the maroon shirts and there was no hesitation on Tobias' part. He would plant that foot and go shaking and baking like Allen Iverson with a bad case of Parkinson's.

My guess about the safeties is that VT has been burned by the big play and the long pass the past two games against us and he knows CPJ is just waiting to pull that trigger (although this year I am not sure there is much pulling the pass trigger will accomplish). People play their 3 technique T off the LOS to help avert the cut block and to get in better position to pursue laterally, in this case the sweep. In this case CPJ had a plan and stayed ahead in the chess match with Foster.
