Off Season Priorities

Well now that the season is over, what does everyone think needs to be addressed before spring practice?

For me:

1. A kicker who is reliable from at least 40 yards. In no way should we tolerate a third year of field goal ineptitude.

2. Another OL transfer, preferably a tackle. I’m not aware of the Cochran situation, but would love if he was interested in trying again next year.

3.Close out recruiting class strong by holding onto current commits and at least landing Ball.

If these happened, I’d feel pretty good heading into Spring.

My top three things to work on:

1) Offensive line
2) Defensive line
3) Defensive line some more. That about covers it.

Also, I don’t think bowl games are through cancelling, unless something is legally preventing them from cancelling. Many of them count on the ticket revenue, even though we think it’s all about the TV money.

I think we’d accept if offered, but finding a slot this year is harder than usual by a good bit.

I counted five bowls cancelled with ACC tie ins. Only one with a SEC tie in. Must be that SEC speed.

1.) Please for the love of god, identify the nation's top 25 sophomore high school DTs, and place a coach in their home until they graduate. Wash Mama's dishes, wash Dad's car, and do Jr's homework (and prep him for SATs). Land two of em, and maybe we will have a future as a football program. Without say 4 DTs of at least 3rd team All ACC quality (whether they get selected or not), in the next few years, not only will CGC not be here, but GT football may not. Hyperbole? Sure, but not by as much as some may think.
2.) Please, have at least 2 qualified senior officials (meaning non-ACC variety), attend, call, and explain what they are looking for, at each Spring and Fall camp practices (even during drills and certainly during scrimmages). Penalties at this years' rate will negate improved recruiting rankings.

To be fair the second time it happened, in the Pitt game not the Duke Game, they said it may have been because of an accident that happened nearby and they think it may have affected the lights...

I saw a tweet stating that we might be open to one if offered. Just can't find it again yet.

My feel is so many bowls will cancel that there will not be a lot of teams going to bowls. Several bowls have already cancelled and I only see that trend continuing.

Obviously there are more Div 1A/FBS teams but the number of bowls has exploded primarily to fill the schedule for ESPN.

1960: Bowls 8, Div 1A teams 111 (<15%)
1970: Bowls 11, Div 1A teams 122 (18%)
1990: Bowls 19, FBS teams 107 (35%)
2010: Bowls 35, FBS teams 120 (58%)
2019: Bowls 40, FBS teams 130 (62%)

Some of the early years, a lot of the teams in Division 1A would now be FCS teams. But still assume those numbers are inflated significantly the number of teams that "Qualify" for bowls is so much higher today. If you think about the bowls under the Dodd years, it was truly a privilege to go to a bowl game (by the way, I am not that old). Now it is a semi-embarrassment if you don't go bowling. I think having enough bowls for half of the teams to go is more than enough.

There is some expectation that there will be other schools that do the same. For alot of these young men they have basically been quarantined on campus since August and so this is there first chance to go home and see family in 4-5 months. if you go home for the Holidays then you likely can't go to a bowl game.

Obviously if you are getting to play in a big bowl, most young men are going to choose that. But for alot of the less meaningful bowls will the players want to play that game or go home, and will colleges want to incur the expense of going to a bowl game with tight budgets?

Too many to the point that they have in most cases become meaningless. Dodd had a pretty good team in 1964, even though they lost their two biggest games to Alabama and UGA, that went 7-3 and never sniffed a bowl game. Then, there were really not enough but it was a precarious business back in the day. The Peach Bowl very nearly went under one year. Having 40 bowls now is about two times too many.

You can do all that OR do what UGA, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn all do... pay them early and often.

It should be up to the players. If they don't want to play meaningless bowl game in front of 15,000 fans I don't blame them a bit. Pitt and BC players are doing the smart thing.

Given that Dominek played, 50% of our starting two-deep on DL were freshman (4 true, 1 RS). 60% of the DTs were frosh or rs-fr. Think about that!

Just getting Chimedza, Curtis Ryans, Sylvain, and Clayton back next year alone would be big. Domineck will be better, and Kennard and Ivey looked good for tr-fr. They will be joined by the guys who redshirted, and the transfer/recruits listed above.

Probably won't be world beaters on the DL next year, but injuries and attrition permitting we should have better depth & development.

I’ve heard that Grey Carrol is pretty big and could end up inside at a DT.

Albany Casey tore ACLs his Fr, Jr, & Sr seasons. IF he can stay healthy he is quick and disruptive. We gambled on him and he may end up a medical. But if healthy he has elite get-off and quickness. Not expecting much but he's a guy who could come out of nowhere.

Off season list

1. Find some kind of a kicking game. A kicker that is remotely good, is an improvement.
2. Get some more big boys, for the trenches. We lost a good many games, by not winning the LOS.
3. Have Collins enroll in a "Coaching for Dummies" class. Perhaps, he can learn some game management, over the off season.
4. Find something new, to motivate the kids. This 404 and ATL crap, is boring.
5. Find a better OC and DC. The 2, we have, are average, at best. We deserve better, as fans.
6. Get a LB coach that can teach kids how to read and breakdown plays.

Those are my 6 wish list items.
