My way too early, possibly problematic look at potential GT Hoops roster management

We shall see. I think OBrein is going to start at PF with Ndongo playing center. The others I agree with you. I know its not a big lineup but OBrein can do a lot of things and I think we will decide we will give up some size to get his versatility on the court. There will be times Ndongo moves to PF and OBrein moves to SF but the starters will be our best 5 and these are the best 5. I agree with you otherwise although think Terry has a shot to be at McCollum out but probably not.
Ndongo is trying to make the NBA, and his best shot is at PF. I’d think he’s going to play the 4 as much as we can play him there.
We added two centers (3, unless one plays OTE this year)—aren’t we going to use them as centers?

I actually thought the same thing but the traditionalist in me went with the two bigs.

Many years ago, there was a radio "ad" on one of the drive time morning shows.

Chattahoochee Bottled Water.... The only one with chunks..... :yuck:

Atlanta has had water issues for a really long time.

Was that the drink with little orange gobs floating in it? Which now unemployed marketing professional thought that was a good idea?

I would say our starters for game 1:

NTG
McCollum
Reeves
Ndongo
Doryan (depending upon his preseason. I think you know what you're getting with RM. Id give DO first crack at the spot and see if he grabs it with both hands.

Im a pretty big fan of two point guards on the floor. McCollum did struggle from deep last season but alot of those struggles came during the final 10 games of the season. During the first 19 he shot 36.4%

Thanks for the post. Completing will the drink saga is tough.

Giving Doryan Onwuchekwa an early shot at center sounds like a great idea. Also like McCollum getting at least the initial start at shooting guard. George, Reeves, and Ndongo baring injuries are probably going to start. We have other seven players that have the potential to earn significant playing time or fill favorable matchup roles. Terry, Mustaf, Sutton, and O’Brien will backup guard and wing. Sutton, and O’Brien might play some Stretch 4. Inside Ndongo can play the 4 or the 5 and Onwuchekwa, Powell, Mutombo. or Souare will man the other spot. Next season could really be fun to watch.

I think CDS is really going to lean toward playing Ndongo at PF. Mutombo, Onwuchekwa, Powell, and Kirouac can play the 5. Souare might be able to play the 5.

Terry and Mustaf will be in the 20+ mpg group. Depending on their play, Powell and/or one of the centers will be in that group as well. Expect a rotation of at least seven. Hopefully eight or nine.

Also, based on 2023-24, don't pay much attention to the starting lineup CDS plays. Watch who finishes games.

If this year goes as I think CDS wants, we should not be seeing 3-4 guys with 30+ mpg. I believe he wants to give his key guys less minutes so they are fresher at the end of games.
If a player can’t get more than 20 miles per gallon then they need a tune up.

What about Powell? I saw his game video and he is a load.

If Ndongo can now shoot 3’s at around 30% then move him to 4 IF IF the new guys at the 5 can be dynamic on the roll. Close to Ndongo. If one or both of those is not the case then I know Ndongo is an above average ACC center and Tech is a better team with him at the 5.

Ndongo didn't shoot a lot of threes last season (12 attempts), but he did shoot 33%. CDS will play a lot of different lineups to gain competitive advantage. If Onwuchekwa can be productive at the 5, he also has potential to be a good three point shooter. It will be fun watching this team develop.

There will likely be teams with physically large front lines that we match up better with Ndongo at the 4. But our offense really needs the other team to have to defend the 4 spot in the corner to keep the floor spaced and the lane open for the pick and roll action. Last year when we started games with him at the 4 very few teams committed to guard him on the perimeter allowing them to help in the paint. So while I used 3 pt % as the marker, the real point is he has to shoot well enough from the perimeter to keep teams honest playing him out there which didn't happen last year. Let's see how well he has developed over the summer. 🤞
