My way too early, possibly problematic look at potential GT Hoops roster management

The young man that transformed from ou isn't coming to be the 6th man. He will be the starting sg. I'd guess he came for Miles spot. He is the player that can go get a bucket when the o breaks down.
That’s what I’m thinking as well - George, McCollum, Terry, Ndongo and one other depending on opponent - O’Brien or one of the centers.

It feels like Luke Schensher would be perfect for this team.

I disagree. Luke would not fit well with this roster or in the offense. Lammers or Moses would be much better fits for this team

Good problem to have! The experienced transfers give us some room to bring those guys along at the pace that works for them, with a little less pressure at the onset.
I agree...love O'Brien's fit,can do so many things we lacked last year(consistency from the 3-4's Sacko,Gapare,Deebo) and we have not focused on Reeves at all with the Baye situation and the portal comings and goings.Kowacie is a game breaking talent, coupled with a talent upgrade in Sutton,Mustaf and McCellan makes us so much more dynamic.Baye and Nait in year two on the verge of all conference status makes CDS optimistic he can run with anyone.

Agree on this, and I like CDS, but I'm still looking to see if the current coach can build a team who shows up nightly. I'm no CJP fanboy but his teams were interested in winning every single night (whether the talent was there to pull it off was a different issue). Last year's team sleptwalk into multiple games if the opponent was not deemed worthy enough. We need that Duke, UNC effort every night whether we're playing Mississippi Valley St or Purdue.

He would be to old .

Our current roster (excluding walk-ons):
PG- George; McCollum
SG & CG - Terry; Mustaf; Reeves
SF & PF - O'Brien; Sutton; Ndongo; Souare
C - Mutombo; Onwuchekwa

Not yet officially on the roster:
SG- Thompson (Commit); PF - Powell (Transfer); C - Kirouac (Signed)

The next few weeks will be interesting. CDS has 14 guys signed or committed. At least one of these guys will not be on scholarship

I really think McCollum is starting at the 2. He didn't come here to be the 6th man.

I was not implying any order. McCollum came here as a PG.
GT has 3 guys who are adept at playing the point for 2024-25. McCollum, George & Mustaf. Listed everywhere as a SG or CG, Mustaf started & played point all season in OTE. Not a proven scorer yet like Nait & Javian, but he has great handle, penetration, court vision and distributes/passes with the best. Plus great defensive skills. And we were told last season that Terry was being groomed to play point so he might be a 4th. Under CDS’s 5-out system. I look at this roster as having a 4-man deep backcourt-guard rotation without the 1-2 or PG-SG-CG labels. This backcourt should be able to matchup against ANY other team backcourt. No weakness there, including handling a press defense, one of last year’s Achilles heels.

To be clear, which players are taking on the Computer Graphic position?

It will be interesting to see which of (or if), Sutton, Mutombo, Powell, and Onwuchekwa moves into key roles.

I am expecting a lot from George, McCollum, Ndongo, Terry, Reeves, Obrien, and Mustaf. These seven guys should get the core of our minutes, but we need something from the other group. If for nothing more than to have more size on the floor. Powell is most intriguing. If he can transition form Sac State to the ACC, he could be a huge help. He can play.

Agreed.

I hate admitting how optimistic I am but I felt like we learned last season that CDS knows how to juggle playing minutes to simultaneously develop certain players while also finding matchups that can win. I’m a broken record on this but I think he’s given himself enough pieces to work with.

Just a side question here. At times Reeves can look as good as any player in the ACC and other times he goes kind of quiet. Is this a matter of him still learning last year what CDS was asking of him, or was it a function of different team chemistry based on the lineup, or was it something else?

Basketball is about 1x1 matchups. He does what he can. BTW, I think he gave more consistent effort last year than anyone else on our team.

I understand looking at the roster and thinking about the 7-8 players that get most of the minutes on the ideal “healthy” roster.

At any given time, someone on this roster is going to need to rest and to heal up. How many times has our team gone through a rough patch because someone couldn’t play, or because we played someone who we should have been resting?

I might be remembering this wrong, but didn’t Miles have a nagging issue through the back half of last season that he couldn’t shake off?

I think we have a roster where we can let a player recover, and ease them back into games

Agree with the consistent effort, and I’m clearly not ragging on him, he is one of our dynamic players.

But…. when moving without the ball he can either look dangerous, like someone opposing teams ought to keep up with, or he can look a little lost, which I was attributing to not having perfected his muscle memory for what CDS was asking him to do.

I know this is subjective on my part.
