I don't think you can name a guy they've had, who we wanted, who we weren't able to find a viable (if not better) replacement for.

Maybe not.
But you’re still wrong.

(a) I agree. They'd have to be given a history lesson most likely.

(2) Honestly though, I'd imagine Cremins is a good enough recruiter to put a pretty good sales pitch even if the recruit didn't exactly know who he was.

i was going to make another thread re this but this one will work fine.

given the dlab fiasco and our inability to close on top talent even though we have had a few near misses..... WHERE has bobby cremins been? was he at the clemson game? he is alway good for a brief interview or discussion by the announcers.

he was a wiz as a recruiter and id think he is still a legend in ncaa bb circles. if there was ever a time we need to be able to allow a recruit to chat with bobby in his office it would be now with dlab missing!

would that be an ncaa violation?
Are more restrictions in place now than in Cremins' day?

yes, the restrictions on SA's entering are considerably tougher now than when Cremins coached here.
There were first raised after Marbury's single season as that left a really bad taste in some important people's mouths.
Bobby could largely get a kid in if he wanted to, that is not the case now for the coaches.

Fox stays, Jonas Hayes get a promotion somewhere else. Win Win scenario

IMO Hayes has become the 2nd best recruiter in the state behind Young and he is closing the gap.

interesting note. When the Hayes brothers were looking to transfer their dad's first call was to GT. Unfortunately it was the week Cremins announced his retirement. At the time he only had 1 scholarship available and also felt it was unfair to hand out any scholarships until a new coach was hired and they could make their own decision. By the time Hewitt was hired GT did have 2 schollies available but the Hayes brothers had already decided to go to UGA.

Marbury, yes but even another of our most prominent players from that era may have been in that same boat.

Saunders? I thought he had some other issues though.
Not him.

Big name...played guard.

A retired prof in Material Sciences is a long-time family friend. He wouldn't have had this SA/AS in any of his classes and this may have just been his personal opinion about some of the SA/AS's in general since he is a (retired) GT prof :) ...

but he specifically mentioned this player many years ago as someone who shouldn't even been allowed near campus.

You lost me then. Well, I shld say, the guy I'm thinking of wasn't a "big" name.

I do have a pretty funny story about perhaps Cremins' last bigtime PG. Showed to class for the 1st time on a day we were taking midterms. Had no idea the test was that day.

If his eligibility was dependent on that class, let's just say kg01's stats at GT include a clutch assist.

I had a couple classes with Dion Glover. He just sat in the back making fart noises.

Good first article on coaches who keep an eye on this spring. Not too often will you see Tom Izzo and Mark Fox in the same article.
Going to be a weird offseason. The real key is going to be does the FBI investigation just sort of fizzle out or do they all of a sudden have big news. If they do around the time of the Tourney might make sense when they want to announce stuff.

The author seemed pretty confident that Fox would be gone after this season if they do not get an invite to the NCAA tourney, but I don't think that I agree with that. I feel like he has already bought himself more time with the 2019 recruits that he has committed. He can pitch the bright future that is just around the corner to his boss and keep his job for a couple of years longer. With that said, I would absolutely love for him to get fired after this season so that some of his commits, specifically Hagans, reopen their recruitment.

If UGA fails to make the NCAA Tourney it will be interesting to watch what happens there. There is alot of politics involved.
You have an AD that is probably 1 yr from retiring.
You have rumors that Fox is tight with a very important alumni that has alot of say over the athletic dept.
You have commits from Hagans (who is expected to re-classify to 2018) and King.

The obvious pitch from Fox would be he has the most talented players ever coming in. Though Mark Bradley made an excellent point in the AJC last week - if it hasn't happened in 8 1/2 yrs how likely is it to ever happen. Fox is one of 21 coaches who have been at their current school for 9 seasons. 20 of them have NCAA tourney wins. 7 have Natl Championships, over 1/2 have been to a Final Four. And then there is Mark Fox.

if McGarity is truly going to retire soon they may not want him making a coaching change decision. Also, Fox has a reputation as a by the books kind of coach and with the FBI investigations going on that may help.

If Hagans is truly going to re-classify to 2018 i don't see much chance of his ever ending up here. He is going to school for one year and then going to the NBA. He is going to want to be somewhere where the ball is in his hands alot. Can't see that being GT with a potential backcourt that includes Jose. Josh, Devoe, Phillips and Haywood.
UGA's guards have been mediocre at best and there have been persistent rumors that Jordan Harris and/or Tyree Crump may transfer out after the season. I get him going to UGA as he is likely to be given the ball and allowed to have it alot.
