YesGusher and Outlar were both much better writers, in my opinion.
AgreeLewis Grizzard. Furman Bisher. Mark Bradley.
Each of these guys had a helluva run. The AJC was lucky to have them.
I feel you pain....Furman Bisher was the primary sports columnist when I was coming along. The AJC has had some fantastic sports columnists...not sure what they are going to do in the future. The present day "influencers" can't, or don't, or won't, write with any kind of style or substance (or proof reading). All they want is clicks.Plenty of disagreements, but when I was younger, the AJC was the only place I could go to consistently read Tech sports. Good luck in retirement. Also, I feel old that all of these guys I grew up reading are retiring or worse lol
Not many papers have true sports colonists any more. Instant reporting / reaction has won the day vs thoughtful columnists. My issues with the AUC transcend the sports pages, though they have contributed over the years. The last time I read the AUC was probably the early 90’s.I can tell there are some strong feelings both ways concerning Mark and the AJC.
I will say that the AJC is about the only Georgia media organization that consistently covers GT, both good and bad. Our local paper barely covers GT. During football season they always have a big front-page article and picture on the Dogs and then place the Tech score in a summary of ACC games on page 2 or 3.
I was watching WSB this morning and heard the reporter say that she was sorry to report that "YOUR Georgia Bulldogs lost their playoff game". I guess we are all UGA fans, and I somehow missed it.
Concerning Mark Bradley, I have had some direct contact with him through email. I have shown praise for some of his articles and expressed disagreement with others. He has always responded with professionalism and often with more information if I asked for anything concerning his articles. As an example, one of his articles pretty much said that the Big 12 had moved into 3rd place above the ACC. I asked why he believed that to be the case and he responded with some financial projections that he had based his article on. I know he criticized Paul Johnson's recruiting, but I think those comments were more factual as opposed to opinion. I suspect we were all happy when he started criticizing TFG! During the ACC's expansion to 12 teams, he had some very positive and complementary articles.
Bottom line is that I come down on the positive side concerning Mark.
Curious as how you currently have issues when you haven’t read the paper in 30 years. I get it but couldn’t pass up that softball. My issues with the AUC transcend the sports pages, though they have contributed over the years. The last time I read the AUC was probably the early 90’s.
As I have recounted before, I caught them in a bold face lie over an issue that is near and dear to me.Curious as how you currently have issues when you haven’t read the paper in 30 years. I get it but couldn’t pass up that softball.
Do you think the lie was an editorial decision, a rogue writer, or getting wrong information? As I have recounted before, I caught them in a bold face lie over an issue that is near and dear to me.
I consider freedom of speech one of national security. It is a sacred trust for our nation. Newspapers exist to that end. Deliberately lying is the worst violation possible of that trust. I will never trust them again.
NmSeems as if the national media has been lying to us for at least the past 5-6 years on political issues. I feel your pain.
It was the writer as it was in the body of the article. It was not the first time, but the worst in a long line of such incidents. I’m done with them.Do you think the lie was an editorial decision, a rogue writer, or getting wrong information?
Same for me. I'm glad there are more options for coverage now. I know everyone has their opinions, but with Wrecktalk, Afterswarm, Crowded Booth, Jackson Caudell (Beleav), Nahjah Wilkins, etc - we have some options now.Plenty of disagreements, but when I was younger, the AJC was the only place I could go to consistently read Tech sports. Good luck in retirement. Also, I feel old that all of these guys I grew up reading are retiring or worse lol
The AJC couldn’t lean anymore to the left The past few years. Mike Lukavich (sp?) doesn’t hide the fact.Best joke I’ve heard in a long, long time.
