I still like Paul Johnson's description the best....but it is apparently banned on this site.Collins = The Former Guy (TFG)
A different way of refusing to acknowledge a horrible coach. See B*** L****.
I had a similar encounter with Bobby Bowden in, maybe winter 2001 at church. Before he spoke, he walked by me and stopped to shake hands and I asked him to take it easy on Tech. He laughed and said wtte: “Take it easy on Tech! George needs to take it easy on me!”Just a short personal story about Mack. I was traveling on business in North Carolina sometime in the 1990-95 period (Approximately). I was staying in a hotel somewhere in the Charlotte--High Point area, not sure exactly where after 30 years. I was having dinner at the hotel restaurant when an adjoining ball room opened up where a crowd of UNC alums exited into the restaurant area. The restaurant was on a raised platform type area.
Mack was mingling with a few UNC alums/fans after the meeting. After the meet and greet wrapped up, Mack headed directly to the rail around the restaurant area and stopped at my table to shake hands and spend a few minutes with me and a couple of the other patrons. I don't recall the exact discussion, but I know we talked about the ACC and GT. I am sure he thought he would be recruiting some new UNC fans or supporters, but I know we talked about my being a GT alum and supporter. I was pretty excited about being in the ACC in those days.
I will just say that Mack was very gracious and seemed like a genuine good guy and gentleman.
It would be hilarious, but I don’t see any reason why they would do something so stupid. He led their defense in giving up 70 points to James Madison this year.I'm going to laugh so hard if UNC hires Collins as full time HC
He just signed an 8 year $8 mil per year extension. They were only paying Mack $4.3 mil. So I doubt itI'd expect UNC to pursue Indiana's coach.
That's why Mack left for Texas originally plus he knew he couldn't beat FSU back then.I listen to the Inside Carolina Podcast all the time. Their podcasts are conducted by smart and objective people. The question they all have is how to find a topflight HC to come to a school where the Administration is not all in for football. When I was at our game there this year, the media seemed more concerned about covering the basketball practice game than covering the football game. So much for the idea that UNC is the school cherished most by SEC expansion. This is a dead end job. It must kill UNC fans to see Duke 8-3 right now under a first year HC?
I have never understood or agreed with the notion in bold. UNC football has been mostly mediocre for decades except for a few good years.I listen to the Inside Carolina Podcast all the time. They haven't won the ACC since 1980. Whoever believes they are a football power on par with the $EC needs to be tared and featherd and ridden out of town on a rail.I have never understood or agreed with the notion in bold. And they ran off Bill Dooley & D*ick Crum.....They haven't won the ACC since 1980. Whoever believes they are a football power on par with the $EC needs to be tared and featherd and ridden out of town on a rail.
You are confusing why they are wanted.I listen to the Inside Carolina Podcast all the time. Their podcasts are conducted by smart and objective people. My take is that Mack Brown is a good guy whose best days (and the sport itself) have passed him by.Just a short personal story about Mack. Not to say it can't happen, but I cannot think of a single basketball blue blood that became a perennial power in football. I am sure I am missing one, but not coming up with it.My take is that Mack Brown is a good guy whose best days (and the sport itself) have passed him by.
If he had won a Natty, he would be up there with Dean & Roy, but as it is, I think Carolina fans will be ambivalent about him in the years to come.
Carolina football is a sleeping giant, IMO. If they get it right, their next hire could change the ACC dramatically.
Agreed. I think people like to say UNC could be good, but honestly Football will always play second fiddle to basketball at the school and I'm not sure a big-time football coach would want to stick around in that environment when they can go to a Football first type school. Not to say it can't happen, but I cannot think of a single basketball blue blood that became a perennial power in football. How you choose to read TFG is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone is entitled to their own preferred version….I was reading it as "The former Goof"
