Let's compare coaches, just for fun !

Something that a GT grad might ponder as all the discussion about funding and resources and financial support for the football program vs. that at Clemson or other factory schools -- and I think Clemson is a factory school but one that does it ethically and by the book -- is this:

Is it possible that despite all the talk about grads becoming millionaires and high "average" starting salaries for new grads, is it just possible that a Georgia Tech graduate, male or female, looks at the football program as well, just football? At the close of business, it's just a football team and the rest of the world is nuts for pouring money into them?

I suspect it is. And if that is the rationale, why is it wrong?

Lane has already shown himself to be a win at all costs kind of coach with his hire of Briles. If we hire him, I’m not putting a dime to the program until he’s gone.

That would be offset by me who will renew season tickets if we get a Lane type. This is my last season of season ticks til change.

Most of the SEC schools are larger and ... in rural towns. Following football is part of the social fabric of the community whether you attended the school or not. I don't think this level of rabid-ness is in the other conferences (as much).

Soooo, you're calling 54th and 48th (per 247) "recruiting success" ? are you auditioning for that AD position or something?

No, but the players have been more what we needed over that period. As you should know, we reliably grade out better at the end of a class cycle then programs rated much more highly in initial recruiting. That's because we have more standard requirements for the offense - not so for D - and we get players who can do the job. Best recent example = Kirvontae Benson. But I recently said my piece on the accuracy of recruiting "ratings" and I expect you wouldn't agree.

Oh, and I left out another really monstrously stupid decision to fire a head coach: Nebraska firing Bo Pelini. Or, as the crack Nebraska AD put it:

"We weren't good enough in the games that mattered," athletic director Shawn Eichorst said in his meeting with the media that lasted nearly 35 minutes. "I didn't see that changing at the end of the day."

Sound familiar? And this for a coach who averaged 9 wins a season and turned in 3 10 win campaigns.

Oh, and Scott Frost is 0 - 2 at Nebraska so far, losing to long-time feared powerhouse teams from Colorado and Troy. Their game with the Zips was postponed or they'd probably be 0 - 3. Of course, they get Dedrick next year so their problems are about to be over. Too bad he's not with us still; then our problems would be over.

I don't get the "Give Coach X time to turn it around" speech, then pass judgement on Coach Y after 2 games. Nick Saban lost to Louisiana Monroe his first season...in the 11th game no less, before finishing 6-6. Good thing 'Bama didn't bring the pitch forks after one season.

Let's not forget: College sports is entertainment. That's it. If people don't show up to watch the games, and no one tunes in, college sports doesn't exist in the form we know it. It then becomes 22 guys chasing an oblong ball on some random field. It's no different than my Wednesday flag football games.

I root for GT, and I root for our players. I respect the guys coaching our team, but ultimately, when they leave I'll still root for GT and the players. Fans don't owe coaches anything...afterall, the money we pay for tickets and concessions, and the donations to the program pays for coaches to be here. Coaches don't pay fans to be in the seats. Coaches are nothing more than mercenaries who wear a headset on Saturdays, and direct 85+ guys on coordinated activities.

There is NOTHING wrong with fans voicing their displeasure with coaches. Some fans take it further than it needs to go, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

While I agree firing a guy like Bo Pelini was a mistake unless they had a home run hire waiting (they didn't) you have to also take those 9 and 10 seasons into context. The Big10 at the time was really, really bad. Like maybe the worst P5 conference bad. Nebraska padded the terrible conference play with cupcake teams OOC most years as well.

This whole thread is silly beyond belief. For reasons already laid above by several other fonts.

Here's what will happen. No matter what happens this year, Coach will be back if he wants and I suspect he does. We are in the initial throes of a program to catch up with others have been doing while we sat on our hands. Until we see the fruits of the present improvements and what Coach does with them, he is not going anywhere. Further, it would be unfair if he was forced to after the general neglect the program has faced over the last 10 years or so.

What is happening here is ye olde fan rebellion against a long standing coach who has run into some bad times. I.e. exactly the same kind of foolishness that led Texas A&M to fire R. C. Slocum and Tennessee to fire Phil Fulmer. And firing Coach at this stage - especially given our recruiting success in the last two years - would be just as stupid as those monumentally dumb decisions. Into every football program some rain must fall, but that is no excuse to get rid of a successful coach who has taken the program to new heights, despite some recent down years.

Btw, anyone thought of what a thread like this says to recruiters who would like to poach some of our present recruits? Apparently not.

Recruits wanted by any big P5 program are approaching our recruits regardless of this thread.

Those being approached by troy, chattanooga, Elon type schools can easily be stolen back from them.

The bigger recruiting worry we have is what we are putting on the field in year 11, and who is coaching it.

You ever think of that?

P.S. The biggest problem we have is not CU this Saturday, but bgsu next Saturday.

The mistake was not firing pellini, but hiring Riley.

Hard to believe we have fans more loyal to a man (one given an extraordinary length of time here) than to the school and the program.

Man makes millions, and if he headed the math dept he would have been long gone.

I'll still watch, but I do think that we need to try and get away from it. As much as I love watching it, I think it needs to go after CPJ.

Dude is basically an institution at VT, but you have to believe getting passed over for Fuentes probably let him know his ceiling at VT.

But at the same time, I still think I can bring a lot of value to the program, or any program. And I love this program. I love the Hokie Nation. They've taken me in and made me feel part of a bigger family."

Team Foster up with an up and coming OC from FCS or lower FBS, and could be a dream team for GT. Top notch defensive mind and an exciting OC that appeals to the loaded offensive players the state of GA produces every year.

Charlie Strong absolutely outcoached GT at USF...

No hell he didn't. Charlie knows defense. His defense was lit up. We have any defense at all we win. Searcy doesn't fumble we win. We have ST coverage we win. Out coaching didn't have shyte to do with that loss.

Charlie barely scraped by us, at home, after we had our starting RB knocked out of the game and our starting QB get injured and two defensive starters were kicked out on iffy flags. You have to be living in an alternate universe to think that game came down to him out coaching us.
